Roswell, New Mexico (2019)
If not for the political stuff, this would be better.
All of the good parts of the writing would still be good without the political jabs which are not of the "lightly touching on" or amazing kind. It's heavy handed and completely unnecessary to telling a good story. I enjoy some of the different takes on the story and characters, but some of the associated writing is either weak or not portrayed well. Maybe in time, they will grow into the characters more and maybe the writers won't feel the need to throw a political punch at every other turn. If the writing is good, they won't need that crutch.
Here's to hoping they heal-up from their political wounds and start writing a more enjoyable show to watch. If not, personally, I won't be back for another season.
Last Man Standing (2011)
Going to be better than ever...
I have loved this show for years and I am so glad it's coming back...And for good reason. Contrary to what some believe, this is actually a pretty balanced show making fun of all sides and it does it well. Tim Allen plays Mike Baxter, the father of 3 daughters...One is Kristin that got pregnant in high school and is (was) a struggling single parent to Boyd (now played by Jet Jurgensmeyer). One is Mandy (now played by Molly McCook), the pretty, air-headed, self-centered, artistically gifted daughter who becomes a fashion designer. Last, but not least, is Eve who is the more conservative sporty daughter that Vanessa, his wife (Nancy Travis), calls his 'little buddy'. The cast is rounded out by people who work at his sporting goods store, 'Outdoor Man': Ed his boss, hilariously played by Hector Elizondo. Kyle his "right hand man" played by Christoph Sanders. Chuck, his "very cool" security head and neighbor played by Jonathon Adams. Joe, working in the garage played by none other than Jay Leno.
The story lines feature family and life situations and lessons generally presented in a humorous way, but still making you think. The truly best part is the dialogue playing off the differences in each characters point of view. The cast seems to genuinely love what they do...So much so, that after it was cancelled for a year and came back, almost all of the actors came back. Can't wait to see where this series goes now...It should be a fun ride looking for all the inside jokes.
Greedy (1994)
Above Average Comedy with Above Average Bowling
Well, I have to say I'm going to be a little biased. I have to appreciate the effort that Michael J. Fox went through to sell the bowling part of this role. No, he wasn't about to make a name on the tour or anything, but working the great Johnny Petraglia, he did turn into an above average bowler by the time he got done. A buck 75 bowler was a pretty good average in 1994 and not too shabby today.
I have always liked Kirk Douglas and I think he played all the little different levels of deception about as well as you could want. Phil Hartman is Phil Hartman...I do miss his humor. Davis and D'Abo are definitely enjoyable to watch, Ed Begley had his moments and who doesn't like a Jimmy Durante impersonation?
All in all, I think it succeeded as an above average comedy, but I can understand why the morality lesson doesn't appeal to everyone and probably even less today than it did in 1994.
Give it a chance...you never know when you might get a lucky strike.
Facing the Giants (2006)
If you're concerned about the acting, then you're missing the point!
The story and how it was told is the point. Considering most of the actors were church members, this was excellent and I thought the power of the messages throughout the movie were the best part of the movie. Like everyone else, I laughed, cried, and cheered. And when the movie was over, I clapped too.
Folks, this movie came out 4 or 5 months ago at this point and was playing in a second run dollar theater and it was *full*. I'm actually sorry that I didn't see this when it was in the full-price theaters...It was that good in my opinion. I will buy this movie when it comes out and I'm going to buy extras to give to friends as presents. This is a truly uplifting and wholesome movie.
