Leave the World Behind (2023)
Best movie I've seen for a long time 👏
God I've needed a movie that held my attention like this for so long!
I do understand how innuendo could easily be missed if you weren't connected as the slow burn quality may have lost viewers. But innuendo there certainly was, deeply weaving the story together.
Sets were amazing, sound, overall creepy feeling and beautiful pauses - long gazes, slow pans and truly awesome camera work easily held my attention.
Of everything that I loved, my only disappointment and I hate to say it, was Julia Robert's. So sorry Julia but, I don't think I've ever "seen through" her performance before but I did with this 😞 Ethan Hawke is all the way back baby, well done and nice to see Kevin Bacon even if only a little cameo.
Well done everyone involved this was creative triumph all round 👍
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
My first cinema walkout!
There was no doubt of the effort and budget that went into this film. The sets were amazing and the scene was well set.
Unfortunately though it was the boring thing I've tried to watch.
I literally wasted our Gold-class tickets on this which we walked on at the 2 hour mark..
Zero character development, no excitement at any stage. The chemistry between the leading couple was not at all believable. Anything that could have sparked an emotional connection for me was void. Even Leo, he is usually a sure thing for me but this I felt he struggled with . He was uncomfortable carrying weight and with the teeth. I could see his struggle on his face. It was hard to watch. I gave a 5 because I can see the hard work that's gone into this but for me this was a fail and if it weren't so visually impressive it would have received a 4.
Speak No Evil (2022)
Tense and frustrating
The scene is well set, actors are superb and had me completely roped in. I can't give higher than 6 though as a few things just didn't hit it for me.
The wife was characterised as outspoken, willing to say what needed to be said but when it came to the moment where she needed be strong and fight, this part of her personality disappeared. Why bother giving her a voice at all in that way, it made her quite incongruent.
Bjorn spoke of having a wild in him that he kept harnessed- I'm not sure why this would be written in to the script if he wasn't then later faced with having to free the wild in himself and fight for his family? This left me confused.
Finally, it frustrated me that they both gave up. Marriage is most commonly made up of two different personalities coming together. It's so rare to see 2 people who are married respond this way.. that was very frustrating. I may have yelled a bit while they all drove away in one of the final scenes.
This really did leave me feeling quite deeply sad. A very tragic ending.
Black Snow (2022)
Great Australian film making
Loved Travis in this! My favourite of his work so far.
Real Aussie style drama, loved the backdrop country Nth Qld and the really nicely tailored imagery and camera work. Story line was simple but captivating, I literally had no clue who it was till the end, love it when that happens!
Character development was well done and the timeline jumps were easily defined, even though this had the potential to be problematic as there was a constant back and forth, it was handled very well. I watch it all the way through on New Year's Day morning after watching the first sunrise for 2023!
A great way to start a new year. Great work.
Bump (2021)
Loved it
I just finished season 3 and watched it in a single sitting! Much like how the first 2 seasons went for me.
The writing is just superb, funny,, captivating and deeply emotional. As a teen mum myself I recognise that some real research went into this which I really appreciate- there are things no one else can know and this is really cleverly integrated and so well it breaks my heart (in a good way)
There has been real effort taken to establish the characters and this season expanding this out a layer to close friends and family members who we haven't been as intimate with in the first 2 seasons was such a great addition!
Well done to everyone on this, acting was just excellent! Special mental to Claudia, wow what a friggin blast this season! Haha still makes me laught out loud! Oly and Santi chemistry is divine to watch! Writing and soundtrack a true synchronicity - can't wait to see the next season 👏👏.
Moonfall (2022)
Terrible
Pretty disappointed that this some got a 5.3 as it's not nearly there and if it was correctly rated I wouldn't have wasted money on it.
There was so little that was ok about this train wreck.
No actor made it worthwhile, not even Haley Berry. No writing. Certainly no tech skills, the blue screen effects are so bad. I'm sure I can do better on Splice.. The storyline, all of it, absolute tripe.
It should get a 2 but the someone managed to cast a few usually good actors and talk them into working on this so they deserve at least 1 star.
DO NOT spend money on this!
Invasion (2021)
Still confused and I watched the whole series
I don't often leave reviews, but I have to say this was maybe the worse series I've ever watched.
It took several episodes to see an alien which was weird. There were several stories running parallel to each other. Each, equally terrible. There was zero character development. The script was awful. I just kept being reminded I was watching a terribly made show and at no point was I able to associate with anyone.
Who gave this the tick of approval, who put money toward this? I am gobsmacked.
An absolute waste of time and money. Actual rubbish.
The Third Day (2020)
Beautiful but immensely flawed
I'm a Jude Law fan. Add his face and talent to this stunning landscape and cinematics and you'd expect a winner. Sadly the story was so distorted even having these two together couldn't save it. I surprised myself and sat through both seasons, begrudgingly. The acting was excellent throughout but the story lost me over and over and over. Too many unanswered questions, far too slow and just a silly storyline let's this down.
This was a beautiful piece with a really special back drop but really was a pretty heavy fail unfortunately. I gave a 6 purely for the talented videography and editorial, along with actors who brought this halfway to life. But after sitting through all of that, I'd rather just get my time back minus the frustration.
Normal People (2020)
WOW..
It's not often I am drawn to write a review. I always make the point of adding my rating so that my honest voice counts. But today when I watched the final episode of this utterly beautiful piece I had to write about it.
What a perfect triumph! What perfectly delectable triumph.
I hope that both of these incredible actors and the minds behind this series receive the accolades they truly deserve. The chemistry of this couple was insane and truly heart inspiring, I fell in love with you both, well done for stripping bare and showing us your souls.
Thank you thank you thank you to the insane talent that built this soundtrack! Blew my heart to smilthereens teaming those tunes to this beautifully written script and added a pace to die for. I am grateful for these hours of beauty.
Thank you <3
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Nothing good
I gave this 4 stars purely out of respect for Will Smith who I genuinely think is awesome. If this were not his Movie it would be receiving a 2.
No need to watch this dump of a flick, nothing works unfortunately, nothing at all.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Amazing
I loved this so much! Well done to all involved. It has everything. Love, mystery, intrigue, fear, sadness. Incredible character writing and brilliant acting. The children are outstanding!! Can't rave enough. I rated this a 9 when I was at Ep5 mostly because I've never given a 10 to anything and though that would be extreme. But I got up this morning to watch the last 2 episodes at 4.30am because I couldn't stop thinking about it! I had to come back in and change my star rating. I absolutely loved this!!
It Comes at Night (2017)
Disappointing
This was beautifully created and a suspenseful setting but was deeply lacking in storyline. So little actually occurred that I was already confused 40 mins in. If it weren't for Joel Edgerton I would have shut this down 1/3 of the way in. It was confusing, incongruent and frankly a little boring. I patiently waited though and saw it through. Alas the climax was so disappointing I was in shock... and it didn't even happen at night!!! What the hell was coming at night??? Nothing came... even during the day. Not cool... not a horror film, barely a thriller, just a shame.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Terrible
I'm so tired of basing my movie watching on the ratings on IMDB and being so bitterly disappointed like this.
I appreciate the Arthouse genre but feel this was one of those moment when a painter draws a pink line through a mottled grey background and sells it for 20K because he said it was the next big thing... this movie struggled to get its point across, if it weren't for the acting this would have zero appeal.
There is nothing more frustrating than walking away from a film having more questions unanswered than you did before it started.
If still you decide to watch, take my advice and give up at the first moment you think, wow where is this going, I'm kinda bored. I stopped my husband from turning it off 3 times as I believed it had to get better somehow, surely? Look how much money they've spent on actors? Alas no my 2 hours was gone forever..
