Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Loser, alcoholic, depressed broken hero.
The movie starts with a slow crescendo will of good Indiana Jones Movie. Then at the end of that 20 minutes of DeepFaked Young Indiana, the breaks are applied we are wiped to 1969, and we meet a loser, depressed, alcoholic, broken hero drunk as a skunk hero the great Indiana Jones. Our hero is pale in comparison to his father, who was a older but virile hero in the Last Crusade. That is what a true hero should go out as, not this slop of a hero that we got in Indiana in this movie.
This flick has the same tropes as SW Episode 7, with the relationship between Rey and Solo, but there he has alway Chewy to snuggle up with. I this one he only has a pretentious Phoebe to deal with being the wanna be lead.
This movie has the same beats as Episode 7.
John Williams again is the real hero, his music tried its best to paste the narrative and tempo of the movie together to make it more enjoyable and palatable.
Is it worth it? Depends. As a popcorn to get out of the Summer heat, yes. As a Indiana Jones fan, yes, but set your expectations accordingly.
Enjoy.
Love in Aruba (2021)
What a Charming and Entertaining Romantic Movie
What a charming and entertaining movie. Good clean family friendly movie with a great message of love can overcome all boundaries. Granted the movie has its clichés, and pilot is very predictable, but . . . For all of that, you really get into the move. The acting was great considering the simple script that was given, and the actors had to perform fleshing out their characters with some earnest to keep the character becoming flat on the screen. The music is a little less to be desired assigning itself to just background music and swells to crescendos at the right time. Who said that a romantic movie has to be raunchy one?
The Batman (2022)
Amazingly and surprisingly good.
Finally, we get a Batman without a origin story or the joker as the fist villain of the franchise's next series of film. A first where we get the Batman pulled out from Detective Comics as a world's best detective and not the action version from the Batman Comics (while there is incredible actions scenes peppered throughout).
This one make you think and stay with it , and the plot and the mystery is well handled and written. Great acting all around. The music adds to the atmosphere and moves the plot forward. The cinematography is absolutely stellar.
Just wait till you see and HEAR the growling of the bat mobile.
Dune (2021)
Lack exposition, but entertaining
This installment is lacking a lot character development and exposition so as the finale will have more punch and be a more satisfying ending. Sill . . . Once in a while. . . It has it moments. It just needed more time to forward to expand on the plot and the characters to develop further. Other than those prior point, it was one hell of a ride that ended way too short.
Old (2021)
Surprisingly good and well made.
A really good movie that keeps you interested and entertained. Outstanding ensamble cast that act off each other. Directed well and written well. Great thriller! Worth the trip to the movies. Don't think that it will streaming anytime soon at the same time that it is playing at the movies.
The Mandalorian (2019)
This is Star Wars!!!!
This is what the features need. . . This visionary tale were you care for the characters which harkens back to when the audience was emotionally involved and connected with its characters, like with Luke. One can notice that it is a simple tale, and is one hell of an adventure, and most importantly, it is fun. This is Star Wars, simple plot, great adventure, and special effects are to help to plot along, and not BE the plot and story. Disney+ has knocked out of the park with this one.
Joker (2019)
A birth of a villainous character. . . .
THIS FILM IS NOT A FAMILY FILM! It is the birth of a character and not portrayal. It is a character study of a evolution of a man's descent into the criminally insane. A full on exploration of why Joker's brand of villainy and why it is essential to the birth of the Dark Knight. If Phoenix wins the Oscar, history will be made, portrayal of the same character (2 times) wins.
Phoenix, Phillips, and the Movie Oscar worth? We shall see.
Batwoman (2019)
It Is All There, But . . .
First, the elephant in the room, Batwoman is a gay character, and it works, really it does, as it does in the comic books. Second, yes, there is peppering of "woke" statements through out the pilot, but it is not too distracting. Third, this is a TV series and not a feature, and it is going to take time for it to develop the character and it is going to be like an onion - layer by layer. The pilot, has to introduce may key points of the season in a hour. It does not have 2 hours plus and a budget of a feature to develop the origin story of Batwoman. So, they have to do it with a limited TV budget and over several episodes. We have to sit through the season and see what it gives us.
Let us hope for the following: First, that they don't use the charter's orientation become a platform for the like-mind-set-political-activist ruin the proper character development. Yes, Batwoman is a rebel and finding herself and her place in Gotham, and the military, her lover, and her father through her discovery of the Batcave and Bat-goodies therein. Second, we hope that the writers don't use the character for promote their personal political "woke" agenda as in-your-face statement. Third, It is distraction of having Ruby Rose, a super model, as Batwoman. She is a great actress and voice actress, but moments there are cliche body movements and swagger that you can tell is forced and not natural and seems forced which make is boarder line comical. But let's see what she does with the character, and hopefully the editors don't edit out her great acting that she does. I know that the comic book image of read hair, red lined cape, red bat emblem, and of course red lip stick will come later on. For now let's see how it develops.
Is it perfect? Nothing really is. Is it entertaining? It is the goal of any TV show, yes, it is. Is it "woke?" Yes, it is, but is not distracting. Let's the first season run through, and then let's revisit the series again, and see if it survives for a second (most likely it will).
The Nun (2018)
Nice! Addition to the Conjuring Universe.
Have to say that even though I watched this feature as a matinee, and it was still scary. It is not for the weak of heart. I went in with the expectation of a good entertaining film that will flesh out the origins if Valak and where it fits into the whole Conjuring Universe. I have to say that it did not disappoint at all. Not only was it photographed beautifully, the sound effects on point, and the music matched the scene perfectly, the story was perfect and it answered all of the questions that I had about this very important character.
Sorry for those that want the movie to think for you, if you are, then this movie is not for you. If you find yourself as one of these types of movie goers, then this film is not for you. You are going to need to use your imagination, and think about what you are seeing in order to understand it.
It is great roller-coaster ride, it adds to the Conjuring Universe's back story that is needed to make the other films connect with each other. This is film is most defiantly a standalone film; it is that complete in story and plot. Please no kiddies; this is defiantly an adult movie.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Wonderful and Entertaining.
Reading the other negative reviews (it is proven, that it is easier to be negative than to be positive), I wonder if we are seeing the same movie. Well crafted, acted, directed and filmed, The reason that we go to the movies to for escapism. To leave behind the trappings of the world and just be told a good story, of which this movie is! There are some people that likes to have everything explained to them and not to think through the situations that the characters find themselves in. Remember one thing that in watching this movie, that the monsters have super ultra sensitive hearing that can sense the slightest of sounds, from the crushing of leaves to the whisper of a fly's buzz, This family has to live in this new world with children, that are naturally noisy, sets up the whole film up for one heck of a roller-coaster-ride of pure cinematic escapism that make you think , and go through a whole tub of pop-corn before you know it.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Solo: great adventure and entertaining!
Solo: A Star Wars Story is a far more cohesive story from the Star Wars universe than any other contemporary Star Wars addition. While it is at times distracting with character of Han (which was not a wise casting choice). The feature is full of adventure, purpose and the fleshed out backstory of how Han became our beloved scoundrel is spot on. Many "oh . . . that is why" moments and a huge harking back to the "CANNON" features. Who else to add to the story, than the writer the wrote the pivotal Ep 5 and 6. They bring familiar beats and situations that echos all to well, that makes one say, "why?" And is more a distraction to the story than is needed. Have to handed it to Howard to come on a film where it was going in one direction, and turning the ship to another and reshoot 80% of the film take a lot and he should be giving an award for that at least.
Great family fun and very entertaining, get ready for a great ride and a possible introduction of an already beloved comic book character in the features. Better than Rogue One? Yes, but not as Ep. 5: right in between.
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
Good backstory to a wonderful Francise.
At times when the studio is running out of ideas of what to do next for a franchise, they will go to the back stories of the characters that were written to help develop the character of the initial release and the more successful feature. in this case they picked Elise character. Now the question is it the right one? Was is necessary? That is the question that each one have to ask ourselves while we see this feature.
While it is great fun and entertaining movie, well put together for a thriller/horror feature, it does use the typical 'gimmicks" for this type of genre. Like the sudden scares, the creepy basement, the cob webs, creaky doors, a dark old house, the use of sub-sonic tones to increase the tension of the scene, etc. It has been a entertaining franchise, and I believe that it has run its course, But don't be surprised if they manage to squeeze about another one, and really put the last nail in the coffin for the Insidious franchise.
The Shape of Water (2017)
What a wonderful and magical story
This film is a decidedly adult film, NOT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ESPECIALLY KIDS. Del Toro knows when the film is made for the adults and mature audience, and when it is made for the family, where there are children may be present. It is a perfect production and goes to show you that you don't need a huge budget to tell a story. With the little money that he made, most of the special effects are tradition, and CGI is only used where is it absolutely necessary. That can you say when it is perfectly written, directed, porduced, but "the Oscar goes to . . . .". After the film you be satisfied, and pleased. Well worth the purchase or rental.
