The Alienist (2018)
It is a good show
It is a good show. I was very sceptical for a moment with how slow and gloomy it can be at times, but I watched the entire thing in 2 days and I want more.
The characters are well-written, complex, original. While we already had some mean geniuses on TV, Kreizler has a soft side and just like his patients, he's a mistreated child who eventually accepts his past and moves on. He's not perfect, he says and does some things that are disappointing but that makes him a believable character.
I enjoyed how the show approached feminism. It is there, it's woven into the entire show but it's not screaming at you. Sara is struggling as the first woman working for the police and as a single woman whose friends are already married/engaged. However her struggles as a woman out of her time isn't the main thing about her and she still has a complex personality built on her tragic backstory.
Overall, it is enjoyable and mostly unpredictable. It is not something I'd recommend to just anyone, but if you enjoy crime shows that take things slow and focus more on the psychology and mystery rather than explosions and banter, then you should give it a go.
Life Sentence (2018)
It sure had some potential
The characters are absolutely dull and it doesn't seem to change so far. Stella makes the same mistakes over and over again (trying to fix one thing and neglecting other things in the process) and somehow doesn't suffer from any consequences in the end. Secondary characters feel like the actors had to improvise basing on single sentence descriptions.
The whole thing is painfully simple, like it's written by a 15 year old. She gets caught browsing confidential documents? Meh, let's turn it into an opportunity to reach her goal somehow...so the guy she's looking for happens to host a party that exact night(!) and the person who caught her snooping will introduce her. Yeah.
