The Last of the High Kings (1996)
Light-hearted movie to watch in 2022
I wanted to watch a movie, but didn't want to watch anything I've already seen, so, just picked Jared Leto and scrolled through all till found this.
I maybe didn't connect that much together with the Irish thing, but eventually it all came together to me towards the end of the movie. It felt more concentrated on Leto's character's summer than anything else, tbh, although anything else can also impact this character. Otherwise, I really liked it from A to Z, was laughing it off and also remembered youth apparently through Leto's character's eyes. I really liked this genuinely awkward image he portraited, I caught myself to the feeling we don't see smth like that in movies often anymore. We mostly have smth supernatural or some alpha-males running around, but here... it was just a boy before going to colledge. At some point everyone of us have been there in this weird moment when you don't know how to act, how to talk or any of now seemingly simple things. I definitely enjoyed this 1996 movie in 2022. Giving it 8 out of 10 as in the beginning I didn't really feel it all connecting together, but in overall I absolutely enjoyed my time watching it, and surely will watch it again!
The Good Doctor (2011)
"The Good Doctor" is good!
I'm giving it 10 stars straight away for just leaving me with this feeling of thinking what I just saw. It's one of THOSE movies for sure. If in the middle of the movie I thought I already know where this is going, well, heck no, I was wrong! And if you are waiting for some action-hero-movie-like stuff, it's not the right place, however, there's quite some tense and thrill in it!
I didn't watch the trailers, and didn't read any reviews on this as I usually would do, I also dunno why I took a look at this only now, pretty much 10 years after the movie actually came out. I've seen some movies with O. Bloom, but somehow this one never was in my sight.
Just as for Elizabethtown (starring with also Bloom & K. Dunst) can't really get it's really low average mark. I'm quite sure it's maybe not 10 stars as I would say, but it's definitely higher than what it is now.
The movie is some sort of plain, but then again quite deep, and once you start to dive in, you can't really get out. Well, at least, that's how I felt. After watching it, dropped my eye in some of the reviews, but those which I red mostly viewed Dr. Blake as an absolute evil with no morals at all. Tbh, I don't want to agree. I quite didn't see Blake this way.
It's pretty much noticable that the main character is a loner, and he's misunderstood. Definitely been having higher expectations on his profession, but somehow it doesn't go so well in real life. Not yet. The only thing that confuses me, is movie description and movie itself kind of made me feel like Blake's 1st year in the hospital after graduating, but the car and the appartment really didn't look like he was there for the 1st day. But maybe I didn't pay attention to some things. I mean, his car looked good also for eyes from 2021.
Can't understand do I miss any background story about Blake himself or not to understand why he is what he is, but I definitely don't see him as an absolute evil in the entire movie. It more felt for me, like, he couldn't stop before it was too late (I think that phrase even figured somewhere in the movie). He caught up with the pacient who was one of those people who didn't have anything against him and later on they seem to have a thing for each other, but nothing over the edge. I can't say he's actions are good in order to get the girl back in the hospital, and definitely not good while trying to keep her longer there, but at some point I could relate to the try to do everything possible to not let it all go away with an ease. Whole movie I was hoping she won't pass away, but sadly she did. I kinda knew it would happen, cuz Blake's every desperate step was only a way to that, but I was still hoping. I absolutely loved the kiss scene, it definitely showed the girl was into him and that scene felt more special than a lot of more tense actions seen on the screen, so it was even more sad to let her go. Absolutely nicely captured death scene, the way Diane passes away, Blake's sadness, that kind of realization he is the one to blame for what happened. It never felt like he's soulless, or whatever, he just went too far in his actions. If not that, maybe they actually would end up together. If he was really 1st year straight after the university, they shouldn't have had way too huge age gap. Whatsover, the end was here, Diane passed away, and he couldn't take her back. It's now his sin he has to live with for the rest of his life.
As for following events with Jimmy, to be fair, it felt like Jimmy started his own death with not giving Diane's diary to Blake, and deciding to threaten him. I'm not saying that poisoning somebody is always a good idea, but once this appeared I felt like something like that could arise. Eventually. Another sin on Blake's soul. Also, wasn't really sure what Jimmy's character really red in the journal since the two had a strong bond, but it never was public. It wasn't going any far between Blake and Diane themselves, except maybe for the moment where right before the kiss and death she actually starts to question related topics. Like, the girl wrote her feelings about the doctor, but who could say they actually had an affair, I mean, I didn't really see anything more than attraction to each other.
The end was a bit unpredictable for me. I mean, I had two scenarios in my head - he surely ends up in prison or he makes a suicide. Well, there's was a third one, less likely to happen, that he somehow gets out of it all. Having a detective in his appartment was already one step towards the prison, but then he tried to get rid of the journal, then he jumps out of the window, then there's the sea, and he's running into it... I'm, like, damn, this is it, and then - boom! - he's getting himself together, gets back in the house same way he got out, gets clear with the detective, is back in the hospital, and then there's absolutely unexpected cut, bye, bye, tittles, movie is over.
At the end I say, I loved this all. It was quite harsh, it was quite thrilling, all the time movie had some tense and I was all the time hoping that the main character will stop on time, but maybe then the movie wouldn't be so interesting. I'm also glad this wasn't typical Orlando-is-so-cute movie nor he's some Will-Turner-kinda hero, he was pretty human and portraing a character with a questionable choices we can discuss, a character who obviously was questioning them himself. I could give the actor a credit for all those emotions seen on Blake, it felt real, I felt like at some point I could relate.
Riverdale (2017)
Greatest discovery of 2017
I could make a comic book about how I got to Riverdale, but, I guess, I will skip the part of the actual story. After I made my web research of who the heck is Archie Andrews, I brought two of the latest ARCHIE Comics volumes and accidentally found out there are TV series based on ARCHIE Comics characters.
"Based on the comics" is the right thing to say about the series. I've read only two comic books, I guess, some kinda new & remastered edition, cuz Mr. Andrews and whole gang in the books looks much more different as they do in older versions, but I still loved the idea of high school kid's simple life & problems. Was funny to read. Then I started to watch Riverdale expecting something like that. But it wasn't like that. After first few minutes it gets clear that this won't be some kinda comedy show, but this will be something a bit more serious, well, actually, a lot more serious, cuz everything starts with a murder! But even before I knew about the murder, Pilot episode starts with lovely music and I see a beautiful retro car, a young couple, brother and sister, with red hair, they're outside the car, they're kinda happy, and then... one of them turns out to be dead! Something unexpected! Even before I know about the murder, I start to get lost in Riverdale. And then it grabs me and puts in between everything that's going on there. And I totally love it! From the first few minutes.
The thing I totally love about these series is the events & mysteries, how it all proceeds. 40min can be a lot, if nothing interesting is going on, but in this case you don't even feel, how 40min pass away, cuz it's already the end of the episode and you want to get more and more, you want to know what happens next. The other thing I enjoy about this show are characters. They look just like in comics (well, at least, most of them, maybe I missed someone as I've never read all of the comic books). They have same names and you don't have to guess, who could be this character. But probably it's because comic series are quite old & well known and they are comics after all, where a lot of words and long descriptions has been replaced with clear pictures. When it's a regular book like The Vampire Diaries, you can quietly change a lot of characters' names or looks, cuz Nina Dobrev is cool actress (well, she is, ofc!), but Elena Gilbert has blond hair and blue eyes in books, which is a total opposite of what we see in those TV series. A lot of characters got different names, then I found out they were about to change Salvatores to Whitmores, which makes me think - is there any use to say "based on TVD (or any other title)", if you're going to change everything about the story, even main characters' looks and names?! Back to Riverdale: from this perspective I totally enjoy the accuracy of characters' looks. As well I enjoyed their names, cuz I don't have to guess, which one it could be in the regular story. The only thing/character I didn't like that much is Jughead. No, he's not bad, but somehow I liked him more in comics. Probably, cuz he was kinda the funny guy of the gang and really loved food, he had great replicas to everything. In the show he seems kinda laborious, always depressive or I don't know... But, okay, if I would live in such town, probably I wouldn't be much more happier.
I must admit that the soundtrack of Riverdale is something incredible. As for most of the TV shows, almost every scene, every event has it's song to highlight the exact moment, but OST of Riverdale is something I really love! It feels like a mix of nowadays and something that may remind of last century's 50s - just like Pop's in Riverdale, soundtrack has it's lovely, a bit chilly style. Of course, there are couple of latest hits, but most of all I really enjoy that haughty feeling most of the soundtrack gives. And it's great. Through this I found a lot of interesting music! And we can't forget the fact about the Riverdale Cast and their own songs or covers. If you know Archie's playing guitar and singing, you will see and hear it as well. And you don't have to wait for it way too long! That's lovely, actually. And everyone who enjoys the show, can get a song, sing it along and feel like an actual part of Riverdale.
In overall, I have to say just one more thing - I love it all. I love the simplicity of it. I've never thought I could fall for something simple - no magic, no tragic. I mean - nothing supernatural, and I wasn't expecting storyline like that could feel like sip of fresh air. When there's a murder it's ACTUALLY SOMETHING! Not like - oh, sad, sad, another heart got ripped out, 20min later we're going to kill someone else or we will kill someone for the 4th time already. Riverdale somehow really makes you feel like a human.
So, that's it. I guess, totally great show, I hope it will go on in the same way of awesomeness.
Elizabethtown (2005)
Still Amazing in 2018!
I must say I don't understand why this movie is so underrated and I don't since 2011, when I saw the movie for the first time in my life.
Some time ago I was a huge fan of Orlando Bloom, that's why I went across this movie, and I don't remember why I couldn't see it as soon as I found out the movie exists, but 7 years ago I did it. I didn't know what to expect, but I was amazed by this film. It was as simple as my life - Drew already in the beginning becomes your friend, because who haven't had any fails or even fiascos in this life? I guess, it's one of those points which makes characters on screen and movie watchers so close. Cuz from the first moments you see someone has to deal with a failure, with a problem, with attitude from others, and that's what we do all the time!
I've seen this movie many times and every time I discover something new. Last time I watched it was after I lost one of my relatives. I actually immediately wanted to see this movie, cuz it's characters are going through same difficulties and they have to deal with same stuff as any of us who ever lost a very close and important person. You have your own life, again - your success and your failures, and then, out of a sudden, you have to deal with such things.
And then there's Clair. It was the first movie I really noticed Kirsten Dunst, cuz I do believe I've seen her before, but in this movie she was so adorable, her character was a bit crazy, but a lot lovely. And have you ever payed attention how they met for the first time in the plane? Personally, I checked it just in last time I was watching movie. She sees him and she already knows THAT'S THE GUY. And she walks and she talks, and he doesn't care, cuz he's way too busy with his own life, but then there's this Clair, who simply can't step away from him, who wants to help and probably keep him as well. Anyways, in my opinion this is kinda lovely way how to show people's relationship on the screen, cuz, I must I've been somewhere there as well. Being Clair makes everything much more fun, in life! She's smart, fun and definitely lovely, and deserves the best.
I really love the way how grows relationship between those two in the movie. Also, I love the fact it all happens meanwhile the funeral of Drew's father takes place. Drew's failure, father's death, unexpected meeting with Clair, crying sister and their very optimistic mother, and Drew's meeting with his relatives from father's side + the wedding of Chuck & Cindy. Sounds like a crazy salad, a mix of everything, but it all works so good together. It's actually really simple, and every time I'm watching this movie, I feel like I'm actually watching a life, indeed. There are so many events at once, it actually makes you feel like your watching a life, cuz we all go through all of this and it's not like we're just working or trying to figure out our relationships with others, it's like all together at once and we have to deal with every inch of it all. And "if it wasn't this, it'd be something else".
The final thing I would like to admit in all of this... is the music. It makes this movie much more beautiful. Songs are perfectly picked for every scene they appear and that, of course, makes me love of this a lot lot more. And when I want to take rest from a hard day, I simply turn on something from Elizabethtown's OST.
It's been 7 years since the first time I saw the movie and 13 years already since it came out. I guess, there will be 13 more, and this will still be one of my all time favorite movies. Don't miss a chance to see something so light and sweet!
