nicely done
4 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
My husband and I went to see this movie last night. I was expecting to see another America versus the bad guys with a lot of flag waving and that's not what it was at all. I saw a well done movie with decent acting and the effects were well done. I was mostly impressed with the fact that you never actually see the planes hit the buildings. This was done with respectful subtlety. I would recommend that people go and see this movie. Everyone in the theatre left very quietly and stayed in a small group afterwards prompting some other theatre goers to ask if we were OK and what we had seen. I don't think I'll ever want to see this again but I'm glad I went.

stereotypes are sometimes fun
21 May 2006
What a fun movie. I enjoyed the fact that both countries have stereotypes. If this movie had poked fun at just one of these countries then I would not have enjoyed it. I've been fortunate enough to live on both sides of the border and have watched it with friends from both countries. The American friends asked "is that how you guys see us?" YUP! The Canadian friends asked "is that how they see us?" YUP! I also watched it with some British friends who said "thank goodness we live on the other side of the ocean!"

Now that I've finished rambling (supposedly another Canadian trait) I'll get to the point, EH (aaaagghh another stereotype!). This movie is good clean (no litter here) fun, and in no way takes itself seriously, HUH (there's the American stereotype for you).

Barbie becomes a princess
27 November 2005
If you have a little girl, they will love this.... Just be aware that this is an attempt by Mattel to provide more fodder for the big Barbie merchandising machine.

Of course, it delves deeply into the fantasy staples of evil magicians with magical staves, who ride griffins and freeze all who oppose him. He tries to force Annika (Barbie's most recent incarnation) to marry him. Of course, Barbie escapes and has an adventure trying to help her family. Figures that everyone she meets is some kind of royalty - they always are in fantasy novels.

Something else that bothers me is the lack of credit given to the composer of the score. I understand that the classical tradition allows arrangers to quote from past musical masters, but the mention of Beethoven and his Pastoral Symphony, and Peer Gynt's Hall of the Mountain King really should have been done at the beginning. Sorry, but there are too many quotes throughout the movie to allow just the mention of the arranger at the beginning of the movie. (sorry - your name scrolled by during my rant)

Any more and I'll give it away.
