The Ramen Girl (2008)
Asian cast is wonderful. Brittney Murphy is horrid.
If you're looking for a movie that is physically painful to watch because the "star" is a petulant, spoiled, pouty annoying child, you've found it. I don't think I've ever seen anything with Brittany Murphi in it, and now I'll make sure I never see anything else in which she appears. She is, perhaps, the most unlikeable character I have ever seen. The only thing that makes the movie at all tolerable is the Asian cast. They're all clever and funny. This could have been the japanese version of Barbershop, just moved to a ramen house. If they had left Murphy out of it, it could have been good. As it is, she makes it horrible.
The Kennedys (2011)
A Saint Bobby Hagiography
I finished the series only because I'm a huge fan of historical drama, and there just aren't enough good movies or series in that category. I understand why there are so many glowing reviews. There are those for whom the Kennedys could do no wrong, and for those people, anything about that family will be welcome.
As entertainment, however, it falls short. Some of the performances were excellent. Tom Wilkinson can do no wrong. Katie Holmes, however, is another story. Since when does a socialite speak as if she grew up in a tenement in Brooklyn?
But my biggest gripe is that the purpose of the series seemed to be to bestow sainthood on Bobby. Barry Pepper is a fine actor, but even he couldn't save a character drawn so two-dimensionally. Add to that the slow pacing and scenes of two people sitting there engaging in inane dialogue, and you have a missed opportunity.
Dead for a Dollar (2022)
Terrible
What a waste of good actors. Christopher Waltz is wasted in this. It's pretty much what you might expect from Hollywood these day. A move made in the 21st century, about events of the 19th century, portraying 19th century people as if they thought like 21st century Leftists. It had potential, but the production values and the dialogue are atrocious. B movie material, at best. It's sad to see Waltz in such nonsense., The script is awful and the direction is that of a film school student who would graduate in the middle of his class. Will someone please make a good western? The Magnificent Seven remake was almost there, but there really hasn't been a good western since Forgiven, and we can't depend on Clint to make another one.
Vikings: Valhalla: The End of the Beginning (2022)
Nonsense is the only word to describe it.
You'll love this series, and particularly this episode, if you think an imaginary world of Viking feminists sounds interesting. Otherwise, laugh. If you try to take it seriously, it will be one cringe after another. This episode in particular is essentially an hour of little girls battling and defeating seasoned male warriors two or three times their size, a platoon of so-called shield maidens who are portrayed and Viking special forces, and of course, we can't forget...even for a moment...that the Christians are the bad guys, while the pagans are noble and virtuous. Cause, you know...nothing is more noble than human sacrifice.
1883 (2021)
So much potential...wasted
This could have been so good. Instead, with every episode, one ends up mourning what might have been. Half of it is what a good western should be. The other half...more than half...is melodramatic teenage angst with the daughter of the "hero" who moves from sleeping with one cow hand, to sleeping with an Indian after the cow hand gets killed, and she doesn't skip a beat between the two. Oh, and should we mention that Dad has no problem with this? A Dad...in 1883...has no problem with his teenage daughter opening her legs to one guy after another, and one of them is an Indian. That's realistic.
Then, of course, there is the narration provided by this same angst ridden teenager, which is so sickeningly cringe inducing that it makes one thankful for the invention of a fast forward button.
Oh, what might have been.
Away (2020)
If the goal was to make space boring...
...then this series was quite successful.
This is an example of another curious thing I've noticed. I've watched a number of recently produced movies and series about space, and it seems that in the future, all the nations of the world will pass laws prohibiting men from being in any position of leadership or command. Weird.
Company of Heroes (2013)
A missed opportunity
Decent idea, and a good, but wasted cast. I'm not sure why one would even bother to make this movie, knowing the budgetary limitations, as well as the apparent limitations of the director's talent. Just terrible.
The first thing that caused me to literally laugh out loud was, well, just how loud these soldiers were when they know they're surrounded by the German army. One minute they're creeping through the woods, and the next they're screaming to one another, with apparently no concern that the enemy will obviously hear them. Just ridiculous. This idiocy recurs throughout the movie. In addition to that, add horrible dialog, and nonsense like guys standing on top of a train shooting down on German soldiers, (yes, standing, essentially saying, "Here I am. Shoot me"),
Don't waste your time.
