Mom at Sixteen (2005)
Jealous of a Pregnant Sixteen-Year-Old?
From another comment...
"This teacher is being portrayed as very jealous woman. A woman who is jealous of young sixteen-year-olds that can get pregnant. YEAH thats something to be jealous over being pregnant and sixteen. This movie is just not realistic!!"
She's jealous because she and her husband are infertile. Not because she wants to be 16 and pregnant. Not being able to conceive and have children when you want to is very traumatic. Especially as a woman. It makes you feel like you're broken or faulty. Women are "supposed" to be able to get pregnant. Her jealousy is reasonable, whether or not it may seem like it on the surface. I see people getting pregnant all the time. By mistake. Or even purposeful pregnancies, where they're terrible parents. And it always makes me angry. Because people who actually want to have kids who physically can't have to jump through hoops and pay out the *ss to do it. While you can be 14, poor as dirt, and have a kid just because you have a uterus. It's ridiculous.
Lifebreath (1997)
For Those of You Annoyed With the Sex and Mucus...
Very few movies address cystic fibrosis at all. This is one of the few that does, and does so in an effective fashion. You may think mucus is really "icky" and "gross" but it's a very real part of CF. People show cancer patients vomiting in movies all the time. This is NO different.
As for the sex, it's to illustrate another very real part of CF. Breathing gets in the way of *everything*. Sex goes from being a joy, to being difficult, to being a chore, to being impossible. Being that sex is such a big part of most married couples' lives, it makes sense that it was addressed. I wonder if the director knew someone with CF, because of how well it was handled. The CFer's spouse was constantly worried, and freaked out if his wife was so much as 15 minutes late. Their sex was difficult. Many things in this movie were done well, in regards to the CF.
Not my favorite movie, as I don't much like the way it ended, among other things. But I had to comment about people who complained about the really "icky" mucus. It's real. You don't even have to deal with it. Until your spouse is the one choking on that much mucus, you have no place to call it gross.
Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (1997)
What Sick is Really About is Not Nails Through Penises
I am not squeamish. I know a lot of people say this, but I'm really not. I can watch a lot of stuff with little hesitation. And yes, I had to turn away for a few scenes of this movie. Most primarily the one everyone mentions, the dick nailed to a board sequence. But that is not the most disturbing scene of the film. I found the most disturbing scene to be where he literally dies right on camera. It was just one of those phenomenons where you HAVE to look at it, no matter how unpleasant it is.
For anyone who can't see past all the "gross" or particularly graphic scenes for the movie REALLY is about... your opinions don't mean much. This film isn't about a sick and twisted man who did really depraved things. It's about a man's lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. Maybe people who aren't in the CF world can't understand this as easily, but try. Because the movie is worth watching. And has many important things to say.
The Book of Stars (1999)
Ugh Response to Another User Comment
It's entitled "There isn't enough cement in the form of actors' performances or plot beats to solidify and manifest this melodrama's intentions."
I just HATE factual errors. This person said the movie is about a girl dying of lung cancer. NOT TRUE NOT TRUE NOT TRUE. And very important to note, thank you! Jena Malone's character is dying from a genetic disease called CYSTIC FIBROSIS that affects roughly 30,000 Americans. For those of you that actually wish to learn, try here: http://www.cff.org/home/
Other movies about characters with CF include: Sick http://imdb.com/title/tt0120126/ Alex: The Life of a child http://imdb.com/title/tt0090602/ Lifebreath http://imdb.com/title/tt0102267/
These aren't necessarily really spectacular movies, but they all address CF.
