Persepolis (2007)
Amazing Movie
Personally, I enjoyed this movie and would give it an eight based on a ten scale. I enjoyed this movie due to the fact that it shows injustices that quite often are overlooked, such as in Iran. The movie starts with Marjane trying to board a plane to Iran, but is unable to. She sits down and smokes a cigarette and thinks back to her childhood at the age of nine, and then it progresses almost to the present day. This movie speaks of the horrid laws put into place because of the Irani government when regimes changed. I personally would recommend this movie to a friend, as it opens your eyes to what life was, and has progressed to in Iran. Which, for me, is halfway around the world, and nowhere similar to the United States.
Tuya de hun shi (2006)
Tuya and her Troubles
In my opinion, I do not believe that Tuya's Marriage is close to the movie I would recommend to everyone. The reason being is that it is slow paced, and does not truly go with any genre that I have dealt with in movies. But, this is why I am so intrigued by it, even though it is slow, it touched on important topics in world geography and people's lives and how they are affected when fate is unkind. I believe that this movie, even though it is not one I would recommend to everyone, is something that truly shows hardships and problems that happen in Inner Mongolia (which is situated in China). This movie does not really fall into a specific genre outside of extreme drama, but it is hard to realize this unless you take time after watching it to ponder the plot and the points made inside it. I think this is a movie more for someone looking to widen their eyes to problems in the world, and that want to understand how it can be in a certain place if tragedy strikes.
Chennai Express (2013)
Great movie!
Chennai Express is an amazing Bollywood film which not only is a comedic film, but also an action film, and romantic film all rolled up into one. It is on the shorter side for being a Bollywood film, which is crazy considering it is about two hours and a half altogether. However, this movie is worth it one hundred percent. I personally found it to be a great thing to watch because it has amazing themes throughout it such as family being super important, standing up for what you want regardless of your societal standings/physical appearance. The main character is named Rahul and his journey to Goa for a guys trip is changed dramatically when he forgets something important (no spoilers) on the train named the Chennai Express. When he was getting off the train, he saw a gorgeous woman running his way and he without thought helps her onboard, but also helps other people on board who have an interesting connection for her as well as for why they were following her onto the train. Overall, I think this movie is a spectacular action/comedy/romance film with the perfect balance of all three genres.
Okuribito (2008)
Amazing Film
[***SPOILERS***]
Departures is an amazing film from Japan which tells the story of Daigo, a cello player in an orchestra in Tokyo who moves back to his hometown when the orchestra closes down and becomes a casketing preparation agent (CK Agent is the term in Japan). Overall, I completely loved the film all the way through because it ties almost everything together and really is just a touching movie. However, at some parts the movie did drag along (during the casketing preparations), but it proved to show the intricacy and care taken for this career. It also shows Daigo's eventual passion and thoroughness for how he goes about this choice of career. However, throughout the movie I felt a sadness for Daigo because he was shamed by his old childhood friend, other people spoken of, and eventually his wife because of the job that he took on as a career to make money at first, but then started to enjoy. All in all, I think this movie was incredibly stellar, and would definitely recommend it to a friend (and actually already have).
Merantau (2009)
A Hidden Gem
Merantau is an action packed movie that captures the adventure that occurs during Yuda's, the main character, Merantau. In Yuda's Merantau he travels to Jakarta to find that his living accommodations are not correct, and there is no one to call to fix it. Afterwards, he crosses paths with a young boy named Addit and his sister, Astri. I personally found this movie quite interesting between all of the fight scenes, and the shocking ending. This is a really well done movie, and is quite different than what I would have expected had it been done in the "American" type of movie, including tons of explosions, major firearm battles, and a perfectly happy ending. However, this movie not only surprised me with how amazing it is, but also made me think of the differences between normal America movies and foreign films. Overall, I think the movie is a hidden gem, and shows off silat, martial arts, to its fullest potential, along with some plot twists along the way.
