Ron's Gone Wrong (2021)
One of those movies we saw once and never again.
It really feels like someone slapped this together in a night after watching Next Gen and Big Hero 6. It was just odd to watch. The writing was sloppy. The plot sloppily tripped from one scene to another with little to no rhyme or reason. The tone was inconsistent; if you looked down it felt like you missed something important to the plot it would shift so quickly. The animation feels like it was recycled from a scrapped 2006 movie. My daughter wanted to see it but lost interest around 20 minutes in. I just continued to watch to figure out why.
The Great Outdoors (1988)
Family favorite
Such a fun movie. Doesn't fall into the trap of over complicated situations. Just a simple movie that's quotable and great for the whole family.
Eureka (2006)
Science Fiction meets Daytime Drama
Although it can be a bit over the top with the drama it is a great show. The writing is fun and the characters are enjoyable to watch. The whole show feels familiar while giving the audience something very new. There were moments when the show dipped a bit, but overall the seasons were equally enjoyable. This show can be enjoyed by those who love science fiction and those who have no interest in the genre. Great balance.
Boyz in the Wood (2019)
Clever writing.
Well written dialog. This is filmmaking. Taking a simple concept for a comedic film and not letting the trap of swinging for the fences in every scene. Whatever the film did it did it well. The score was fitting and well selected, the jokes were well timed, and a simple idea was turned into a fantastic movie. Would recommend.
The Great North (2021)
Somewhat a mess.
I know there is a ton of talent involved in this show; however, this show is somehow a mess. I don't think I ever felt a moment where it was being it's own thing. All of the characters felt like discount characters from Bob's Burgers. The dialogue felt as if it was swinging for the fences with every line and there wasn't enough time to digest the joke before there was another unrelated joke presented to the audience. Maybe my expectations were too high because I loved Bob's Burgers so much. Maybe I am jaded because I have seen too many follow up shows that tried to be too much like their predecessors to develop their own magic. Either way, it wasn't really that good and I don't think I will stick around for a second serving.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Overstuffed and boring.
Much like the first WW, there was a bunch crammed into the movie making it a disjointed mess. Some parts were done alright, while the vast majority of aspects were just lackluster. The film got off on a bad foot with the scenes in the mall. The dialogue and action sequences were clumsy and hokey. The decisions made by characters were just inexplicable and almost came off as if this movie were supposed to be a spoof of itself. For the vast majority of the film I felt as if I had seen something similar, done better, in worse films. All in all, I found myself bored and almost asleep right before the third act began. For that, I can't rate it as high as I would have liked to.
Gnome Alone (2017)
Physical abuse is not ok!
It's hard to add something that hasn't already been said; however, the scene where the main protagonist uses physical abuse in to show her annoyance is inappropriate. They made it clear that she was upset at her male counterpart for following her to a dance. The act of normalizing this behavior is unacceptable. The poking, pinching, and pushing is not behavior I want my daughter to emulate because she is annoyed with a boy.
It is not ok to put your hands on someone else.
It wasn't the worst movie, but that just struck a chord for me.
Aladdin (2019)
Tried too hard.
I feel as if it tried to hard. Instead of being a friendly reminder of our childhood it attempted to surpass it. Unfortunately, it was kinda sloppy. There were some things I did appreciate. For example, I do like the fact that they tried their best to cast appropriately for the region the story was based in ( unlike the live action Beauty and the Beast). Also, it was a beautiful movie. The colors were great and the animation nice.
I don't appreciate them casting a clueless European in the role as one of the princes when it seems it was more of a not so subtle statement rather than a casting choice that drove anything, even a good joke.
I understand why they made Jasmine a stronger character but at points it seemed like in doing that they held back her potential because they remembered that the movie they were trying to remake wasn't about her.
A love interest for the genie was completely unnecessary and kinda confusing. Just to make it work, they had to rush in some quick 20 seconds of filler to remind the audience of what we were able to figure out as soon as the movie began.
The new songs were bleh. Totally forgettable, and didn't help drive the movie. They actually had to stop the progress of the movie to fit them in. It was completely jarring.
Finally Will Smith. While he wasn't the worst I think there were other actors who could have done just as good or even better. Right off the top of my head, Jason Mantzoukas from Brooklyn nine-nine. I get it, but if they wanted someone high energy, then even Jack Black would have been a better fit.
There was more but at this point I think I have made it clear how I felt. I wish it were entertaining beating waiting to go from one scene to the next to see what they butchered. Despite the good, it's just not worth the watch.
Wonder Park (2019)
Disappointing
I liked that the movie will inspire creativity and the importance of math. The story itself was just weak. Motivations were difficult to follow. Although it's good to have another movie addressing grief in children, I found it sloppy and not really practical. All in all, it held my daughter's attention for at least 45 minutes.
