The Constant Gardener (2005)
Very Negative outlook
This is the problem with a totally British cast in a serious film, it reeks of depression and negative outlook. There was no resolution to the problem that the film outlined. In fact it was simply a series of events which leads Ralph Fiennes to cry and be killed with nothing resolved or exposed. Typical British problem solving: Keep it quiet, discrete, don't rock the boat, deny the problem but know that it does exist and be ready to die for it: Don't live for it. It's a film to watch at least once so to know the exact reasons for avoiding it in the future. The cast is disappointing and too simple. There is no fire in this film and no inspiration. IF anything it says that should you discover and uncover a plot you'd better keep quiet about it. I give it a tumbs down.
Victory (1940)
Joseph Conrad's Victory
I saw this film about 15 years ago and cannot find a copy of it anywhere. It remains the best version I have seen to date and it captures the story and mood very well. No film can ever remain true to its mother book, but I found this version to be the best. In fact without reading the book it is a good film in its own right. The characters are well developed in the short time and although not everything is captured on film it is still honest and faithful to the book, as much as possible within an hour or so of film. I am seeking this film ardently and look forward to watching it again. If you're looking for a good film and then possibly reading the book I recommend this 1940 version as a 'Film' and a ' Movie'.
