Doctor Who (2005)
Liked everything pre Chibnall
So Classic who used to get top marks from me, most of which I watched as a child, and could fill up my imagination with doctor who adventures.
Watching them as an adult I find that classic who has it's hits and misses just like new who.
New who started well for me, but I missed the Time Lord folk lore that gave a bigger story arc then the individual episodes could.
Several seasons built up the restoration of Gallifrey so much that it wrenched my gut to see it all torn away again.
So I largely enjoyed Doctor Who until Seasons 12 and 13, but am now wondering if Doctor Who can survive without the fan base that has followed it so long.
So in reviewing seasons 12 and 13, I will say this.
Chris Chibnall has made a habit of coming up with episodes that look like an absolute disaster for the Doctor and her friends right up to the last five minutes of an episode.
Then the Doctor gets a solution to the current predicament out of thin air, as if by magic. Leaves you feeling cheated by the ending. I think Chris enjoyed too much as a kid, those episodes where the Sonic Screwdriver got the Doctor out of trouble.
If it was easier to follow the process the Doctor goes through to come up with said solution it would maybe be more satisfying. And Chris does not seem to mind tearing up Who history to reach that conclusion..
So I am very much on the fence here and wondering if fans should avoid the Chris Chibnall episodes entirely.
Police Rescue: Flash the Descent (1996)
Best rock climbing scenes out of Police Rescue
A whole episode of Police Rescue dedicated to rock climbing.
An action packed episode of Police Rescue puts the crew into some tense moments on the rock face.
Who needs special effects.
Loved it.
The American (2010)
Well worth making the time for.
All these people wanting this former assassin running about the place flashing his gun when he is an assassin trying not to draw attention to himself.
Understand the context and be willing to adjust to something a bit different. This is a movie about restraint. And George Clooney shows this restraint with style.
Doctor Who: The Timeless Children (2020)
The glimpses of back story we get in Doctor Who has now been set in a straight jacket.
It is so nice when a writer allows your imagination to fill in the gaps and make the story so much bigger than it was written.
This burden is yours no longer, as Chris Chibnals version of events leaves no room for anything else.
So New Dr Who, Seasons 1- 10,
Basically..
Dr Who was all alone.
"I am the Last of the Timelords.."
Doctor Who, The Day of The Doctor: Galifrey Falls No More.
Yeah, So Gallifrey is saved.
Doctor Who, The Timeless Children.
Gallifrey is Destroyed.
So bit of a pointless / depressing journey that one, wasn't it.
Nerdrotic: Doctor Who Season 12 Episode 10 Review - The Timeless Children (2020)
The undefined back story of Doctor Who has now been set in a strait jacket..
So new who seasons 1 - 10
Basically Dr Who all alone. "I am the last of the time Lords.."
Doctor Who, Day of the Doctor: Gallifrey Falls no more.
Yeah, so Gallifrey is saved.
Doctor Who, The Timeless Children.
Gallifrey is destroyed. So what was the point of going through that depressing journey..
NCIS: New Orleans: Aftershocks (2016)
Investigations ?
So the FBI are investigating NCIS about a rogue FBI agent ??
Am I missing something here?
The Orville: The Road Not Taken (2019)
Disappointing - Sorry contains spoilers..
Star Trek has its share of alternate timelines / universe and now the same can
Be said of the Orville. You could guess what was going to happen ten
minutes into the episode. Not that I am terribly against changing time stories
but to have an end of season cliff hanger that is solved by a jump back in
time to fix everything felt cheap and a waste of a season finale.
My problem with episodes that feature a reset button is that as soon as you
realise that a reset button is coming, any character development bleeds into
meaninglessness. The plot no longer adds to the overall story.
The special effects may be brilliant and there may even be a star wars vibe
happening. But for me the final moments of the story become mindless
nonsense as I wait for the inevitable reset, when nothing that I just watched
actually happens, and I can get back to watching the story progress. But it
seems this will have to wait. :)
