The Irrational (2023– )
9/10
Come for The Procedural Stay for the Behavioral Science!
26 September 2023
Had to speak up after seeing the pro reviews that gave this new series a rotten rating elsewhere. Those critics seem to have gotten pretty jaded. Maybe watching one too many procedurals? None, repeat none, of these tried and true TV tropes have ever been perfect. But to damn "The Irrational" for being what it is, is, well, NOT rational. The show's an example of a pretty familiar but often successful format and its pilot masterfully established both its star and premise with panache and in record time. It set itself apart from other murder mysteries for me, as much for its arguably endearing and interesting star turn as the very real science the character's mini-storytelling makes accessible. I suspect that the more I watch this series the more I'm going to like it -and the more I'll learn about my OWN motives!

Amazing Stories: The Heat (2020)
Season 1, Episode 2
10/10
Give this episode a Peabody!
14 March 2020
Anybody remember those rare occasions when a teacher or a librarian would haul out a movie projector 📽 and instead of a documentary about Plato's Cave or phonics it would be something, well, amazingly non sequitur? "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" was one of those for me. It was shocking (and confusing because it had also been shown on TV as a Twilight Zone episode): The beginning seemed like an ending. The middle didn't take place in the time it took to watch it. And the end might have been a new beginning- but was caught up short (literally) in a particularly grim and final way. Ambrose Bierce turned out to be quite a writer. Point is, I never forgot being challenged by the film.I hope "The Heat," too, gets taken into schools or at least given for 'homework.' Films like it will always be needed so long as there are still neighborhoods where it seems like you either grow up hard or you grow up empty. Kids anywhere will always need to be reminded that the determination to own your own destiny comes from knowing joy, too, can exist even there. But it takes hope to let it own you, be you. It takes courage. It takes "Amazing Stories" like "The Heat" 👏🏻
