The Captain's Paradise (1953)
Not a flaw!
Although Guinness is the star, there are other star performances. Charles Goldner is superb as Ricco, his double takes are crafted examples of the James Finlayson style. His premature death means his performances are few. Johnson comes alive, it was a part she obviously relished. It is also spot the actor! Cabot is there in wonderful disguise plus one liners from a host of talent. The middle section in the Bazaar is a lesson in acting and direction. And throughout the music of Arnold - wonderful.
Venom (2018)
Poisonous?
Venom is a killer! I have seen films over the last 12 months that critics felt good and I have slept through! This got slated and it is jolly good fun! It was not over CGd. Good acting. Good story line. Funny lines. A few surprises. Time flew! Do not leave until credits have finished! Best film I have seen in a year!
Pygmalion (1938)
First V sign in film?
No need to say how good this film is as it has been done in other reviews. Whilst enthralled watching and listening to the exchange between Doolittle and Higgins, Doolittle jesticulates with 2 fingers, in a definite V sign! Class!
Sea of Sand (1958)
Well worth watching
Excellent acting. Tight script. Good cast. Good range of characters. Humour in the face of adversity. Germans speaking German! Plenty of realistic action. Long film but far from boring!
Lilli Marlene (1950)
6 years too late
The film was dated by 1951. It is great as a propaganda film for the war but for the post war period it is out of date. However Stinker Murdoch adds a bright touch for those who collect comedic performances. Overly sentimental and jingoistic with stero typical performances representing all areas of the UK and 'ze Germans'.
The Sandwich Man (1966)
Spot the Stars
A simple idea that fails spectacularly BUT 50+ years later it is a gem. Spot the stars and supporting actors from the 60s. They are nearly in every shot!
