La vie d'un chien (2005)
SciFi for dog lovers!
Harden's film is a smart and funny science fiction about human to animal to human transformation. It got me thinking (and laughing) about how "cultured" humans could learn a few life lessons...from dogs. Some twists in the film push the premise in wild directions to keep things fresh (and me guessing). The French narration, retro-SciFi look, and use of B&W stills to tell the story, create a pseudo-serious style that plays well against the humor.
You may have heard that this film tributes Chris Marker's La Jetee, but you won't need to have seen that film in order to understand and enjoy La Vie d'un chien.
The Lady from Sockholm (2005)
Film noir, sock-style!
The Lady from Sockholm is a pun-lover's dream film. It's loaded with so many sock puns and clever film references that you'll wonder how Producer/Writer Lynn Lamousin came up with all this stuff. What's interesting to me is how the film plays well to both children and seasoned film lovers who can enjoy the nods to film noir. Kids love the sock puppets, while adults enjoy the humor that manages to be both corny and sophisticated at the same time.
There is so much packed into this film that I'll have to see it again someday. When I saw it at the 2005 Mill Valley Film Festival, I sometimes missed what others were laughing at because the jokes were flying by so fast and furiously.
I recommend the film to families and classic film lovers alike!
