Patch Adams (1998)
Perfectly fine movie getting unfairly bashed.
I have no idea why this movie is getting such a bad rep on this site. I thought it had a lot of touching lessons and of course some humorous parts as well. The way I viewed it, I guess I ignored the flaws.
Keep in mind, I am not saying this movie is perfect. Some of the acting could have been better, along with the writing, but I think that what you see here is a movie that should be viewed for what it has to teach.
Overall, I would really give this movie about a 7.5 if I had the option. The best part about this movie is that you can laugh and cry and take what you will from it.
Oh, and the funniest part was that one patient's fear of squirrels. That was hilarious stuff.
Sign 'o' the Times (1987)
Brilliant Concert Film
I don't see how people could rate this film lowly. I think the "acting" is pretty great and the whole thing is very energetic. Sure Prince lip-syncs, but the performances are all very energetic.
The only thing you can rate this movie on is the performance and the music... and I don't see how either of these fail to satisfy. This is one brilliant song after another.
The only qualm I have is using the music video for U Got The Look instead of a live performance. Oh, and not including Strange Relationship.
But really, it has all of the album's best songs like Housequake, If I Was Ur Girlfriend, Play In The Sunshine, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (Oh, man that keys solo in the beginning is amazing).
This movie is just fun all-around and perfect to see with a group of friends.
(Damn, Shiela's fiiiine in this movie. =d)
The Ring Two (2005)
An Abomination...
When I first saw this movie in the theaters I enjoyed it a lot but thought it was definitely worse than The Ring 1. On the 2nd time around, I realized I was too comfortable watching it and there was none of the suspense or disturbing imagery that made the first movie a favorite of mine.
On the 3rd viewing I hated it. I was originally gonna show The Ring and The Ring Two in chronological order at my party but decided The Ring 2 would ruin the impact that The Ring 1 had.
It's like they forgot about the tape. It's nonsensical and stupid. Samara coming out of the hospital bag? WTF? Oh and they made her talk too damn much. The only scene that kind of scared me was the "Cimbing out of the well" scene. That was pretty good and pretty well shot.
Overall, if they mess up on the rumored Ring 3 I will give up on this series.
The Ring (2002)
My First Horror Movie! Still One Of My Favorites
Well, although this movie is only from 2002 it feels very nostalgic for me. I saw this movie when I was 12 and when I was still going to Eden Prairie so it has a lot of old memories attached to it.
That's a little strange considering the film I'm reviewing is a terrifying shriek-fest that disturbed me for months. But this was my introduction to horror, so I suppose that's why I'm happy looking back on it.
This film is not perfect. The acting is not of extremely high caliber (aside from Naomi as Racherl and Daveigh as Samara). Yet there is a magic beyond the film's outer layer that disturbs the senses. The noises of the tape are a good example of this, still frightening for me today.
When I saw this film at my birthday party on Sept. 5th, 2005 it was the first time I had watched it in a very long time. I did not get extremely frightened by any of it except for the classic scene where Samara crawls out of the TV. But I'm sure you could predict that.
However, I will never fully recover from this movie and I will never look at static the same way again. And I thank the makers of the movie for allowing me to do so. They turned a slightly cheesy Japanese movie into something oddly beautiful and disturbing at once. Something that brings out subconscious fears that we may have never known we had.
Gojira: Fainaru uôzu (2004)
Godzilla goes out with a bang.
Maybe I'm completely satisfied with this film because I love cheesiness. Who knows? Regardless, I love this movie and it is my 2nd favorite G-Movie behind GMK.
Upon the first viewing I liked the film but I was disappointed with the monster screen time. However, Godzilla appears way too little in ALL his films as far as I'm concerned. =P The choreography of the monster fights is truly brilliant. Seriously, this is the best fighting since the Showa series.
This movie gets better when you watch it with friends who enjoy cheesiness and stupid wrestlers who spout cliché'd 80s one-liners.
