The Grudge 2 (2006)
Nothing special - Good enough to keep me awake, but not enough for me to call it a masterpiece.
I give this movie a 5 out of 10. It certainly was nothing great, but I have seen certain horrible attempts at movie-making that prevent me from giving this a really low score.
There is absolutely NOTHING special about this film. Unless you are a little kid, you will probably not find this film scary. The parts that are intended to be scary are all predictable. Seeing the scary parts coming is characteristic of many horror films, even some rather good ones, though. So then, what makes this movie different than those ones? The predictability is not made up for by anything else.
SPOILER STARTS HERE: I think the plot of this film sucks. A girl who was fed evil spirits by her mother is killed by her husband later on in life. She then begins to terrorize and kill those who enter the house in which she was killed and those who come in contact with those people, too. She cannot be stopped. I find this silly and too much for me. Blah, blah, blah... I like simpler plots in horror films (NOT simple plots in general, because complicated plots can be really great). To me, the best horror movies are those that keep their plot simple. I have no problem with supernatural stuff in horror films, but adding the bit about the mother feeding the girl evil spirits took it too far. The Grudge 2's plot was nothing really original either. A person is killed. Consquentally, they make others suffer. It has been done.
If you think the plot is good, that is fine. Do not try to persuade me to think it is good or call me idiotic for not liking it, though. Everyone has different tastes. What is garbage to some is gold to others.
SPOILER ENDS HERE.
Certain parts of this movie were pointless and some were even laughable.
In my opinion, this is a theatre film. By that I mean it is a film that should be watched in a theatre. If you watch it on TV or on your computer, legally or illegally, your opinion will likely be lower than it would be if you watch it in a theatre. This sort of movie requires the atmosphere created by sitting in a large dark room looking at a big screen to be watchable.
Blue Collar TV (2004)
Meh...
The Blue Collar Comedy Tour was great. I sadly cannot say the same for Blue Collar TV.
I watched this show when it first came out, but I eventually stopped. When I watched an episode recently, I found it really wasn't too good. This show had SOME good moments, but overall it is disappointing. Many of the sketches are stupid and not in a funny sort of way. I think it could be better.
The show could do without Larry the Cable Guy giving his opinion on things. It could do without the redneck dictionary, too. It was amusing at first, but it is time for it to end.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Great movie and great example of a paradox!
Donnie Darko is an excellent movie! The more I watch it, the more I love it. I recommend to anybody who is willing to think about a movie. If you prefer not to put thought into a movie, do not watch it. If you do choose to watch this movie, keep in mind that missing a lot of the movie will impair your ability to understand it. So, if you want to understand this movie, watch it all.
I love the fact that you need to think about this movie to understand it. This makes it different from many movies. You can understand many movies by just watching them, but you cannot do that with Donnie Darko! You have to think about this movie after it is over. You may even have to watch it several times, which is what I recommend doing. I think many of the people who do not like this movie should try doing that.
I also love the fact that so many questions remain unanswered, thus leaving the movie open to interpretation.
I rated Donnie Darko 9/10, as opposed to 10/10, because there is always room for improvement.
I would try to explain the paradox presented by this movie, but I do not know if I can do that without making this review too long.
Joy Ride (2001)
Nothing horrible, but nothing great.
I am surprised at some of the ratings this movie received.
I've seen worst, but I've definitely seen better. I'll be honest and say that it was better than I expected it to be, but not by much. The plot wasn't extremely original, the movie was unrealistic (seriously, do you think such a thing would happen in reality?), and the protagonists were pretty stupid (in a lot of horror movies, the protagonists are, but it would be nice to see one where they are at least not complete idiots). The older of the two brothers was a total moron and the movie would be better if he died.
The movie can be best described with one simple word: Mediocre. If you only need to blow a bit of time, this movie will do. But if you're actually looking for a really good movie, walk past this one at the video store.
