Aladdin (2019)
Far Beyond Expectation
I wasn't expecting much from the movie because the original was never one of my favorites, but woah was I blown away! From the perfection that is Will Smith as the Genie to the absolute beauty of the production I was in awe from start to finish! The vocals in this movie were crystal clear and took my breath away!!! I can't believe the chemistry between the characters and the updates to the story, I mean the new song Speechless sung by the beautiful and talented Naomi Scott has been on repeat for two days now and the magic and legacy Robin Williams left was not destroyed, it was only enhanced. Will Smith made the role his own and really changed the essence of the genie, in a mot necessarily better but just different way and it did NOT fail. The updated depth of each character and underlying feminist message didn't feel pushy but rather a refreshing surprise! Thank you for presenting probably my favorite live-action movie to date! (surpassing even Beauty and the Beast which was another favorite haha)
Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life (2016)
Definitely for Middle Schoolers
I'm a highschooler (an upperclassman to be more specific) and this movie was definitely what I was expecting in terms of humor and maturity level. I watched because I remember reading the book some time ago and I absolutely adore Lauren Graham.
There were definitely some upsides to the movie. I did shed some tears when finding out that Leo was a figment of Rafe's imagination, and most scenes with Lauren were good.
Everything else was very over the top and cheesy. Alot was unbelievable, specifically any scenes with Bear, the boyfriend of the mother. I just didn't believe Lauren's character would be so clueless (which I mean fits in with a common clique in movies but still). also, the little love story thing and Jeanne's character in general didn't bring a whole lot which I mean I get because they're only middle schoolers.
Also, most of the pranks would not have been able to be pulled off by two kids (well, one if you take into account Leo not doing anything). I think I would have liked it more if he were breaking the rules and not getting other kids to do it for him (which I also understand because there are some you just can't be anonymous about).
A lot of the humor was annoying to me personally because I just don't find the whole towel/dog bit with the sister or the gum on the seats. A lot of this stuff I would have never done, no matter how mean or rude the person is being. I also wished we had more elaboration as to why he was kicked out of his first few schools. It definitely could have been expanded more and used to characterize him.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Amazing!
I love this show. I think it's hilarious at times, most of the time actually, but also can be serious at others. The layout and forethought of the show is spectacular and the messages it contains are empowering. Ellie Kemper is a fantastic actress who acts as a ray of sunshine in the show and, I've found, has now managed to brightened up my year.
The only thing that has been disappointingredients to me, aside from the fact that so few people I know watch this show, is the whole Russ/Jacqueline story line. Despite everything, I actually came to love them together. It gave Jacqueline more of a storyline and revealed layers of both characters. We got to grow as an audience and as I watched Jacqueline begin to change her values that focus on inner beauty, I felt as if I had too. But then the writers decided to completely change that by making Russ handsome and selfish. I saw this coming, but I had my fingers crossed the his hey would have actually made him look a small bit like his old self (i.e. kept the same actor) and I also wished Jacqueline got her happily ever after. I love her character progression, and I hope she gets a happy ending.
