Extrapolations (2023)
Slow.
Found it slow and not really engaging. Raises good questions, but fails to deliver in a captivating way. A top cast doesn't make up for a poor script. Only really cool thing is the future smart tech they have in the series. I can definitely see interactive holographic imaging from mobile devices in the near future, along with pilotless helicopter transporters, and yes, maybe even computer translated two-way dialogue with various endangered animals.
Overall, this is ok, but not great. The debate over climate change continues, and some of the foretold environmental calamity we may be facing as a result of it is still only hypothetical. I guess we'll know just how close this series comes to what it portrays if things really do get bad over the next 40-50 years. Until then, enjoy it for what it is; fiction, of one possible future.
Invasion (2021)
Very slow burn...
There aren't many shows I've watched where I've found myself skipping forward in parts, but this is one of them. I'm still watching it because I'm intrigued to see if it's going to get better. The subtle hints to the nature of the "invasion" and "aliens" in the opening episodes is good; keeps you guessing. But now it's lacking direction and becoming very dull. It's a very slow burn this one. I'm hoping this season will finish with a bang.
La nuée (2020)
Macabre
It was watchable, but it fails to reach any real heights. Not terribly scary, but still intriguing, given the subject.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Solid action flick
If you can ignore some of the silly forced humour, and don't take it too seriously, it's not a bad 'alien invasion' action movie, and not too predictable either. Honestly, it was better than I expected.
On the Trail of Bigfoot: The Journey (2021)
Interesting, but...
It covers the wilderness of the American northeast region which is fascinating, but that's where the appeal ends for me. Apart from some incredible artwork, a few interesting encounter stories and historical records, it does drag on a bit. They seem more interested in the wilderness that this legendary entity could possibly inhabit than the actual mystery itself.
Until we have definitive unequivocal evidence Bigfoot actually does exist, these documentaries will continue to trudge along with the same monotony. All flash. Little substance.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
Keeps you hooked
Sweet Tooth is a great adventure, but also quite dark in parts. There are parts of it that could be straight out of a Stephen King story. It's a captivating roller coaster. I haven't read the original Comic book series, but have to say this is one of the most original and intelligent post-apocalyptic stories I've seen in years.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Tense and thought provoking
Great sequel. And that's rare. The ending is an epic statement on survival; kids taking a stand, ditching their fears and becoming Warriors. It's wide open for a third instalment.
Solos (2021)
A Good Slow Burn
An emotional roller coaster. Reminds me of a lot of Black Mirror with a pinch of the Twilight Zone, but not as intense, or quite as intriguing.
I still enjoyed it.
Another Life (2019)
Has its moments...but
Katee Sackhoff carries the show, and I managed to drag myself through all 10 episodes as a result. While I was really keen to see how it ended, at the same time I couldn't wait for it to end. It was all over the place at times, drawn out, and full of story gap filling scenes that make you cringe. If a second season happens, one can only hope it gets better.
Extinction (2018)
Thought provoking.
Better than I expected. In my opinion, very much a 'Black Mirror' inspired story; in the sense of man losing control of his own creations. I really enjoyed it, and the whole thing comes together quite well in the end.
Geostorm (2017)
Definitely watchable
Flamboyant science fiction indeed, but still a fairly good roller coaster ride of a film. Given the sheer size and scale of the satellite network and the massive space station controlling it, I wonder just how many decades into the 21st Century this film is set in. Not too bad I thought.
How It Ends (2018)
Left me wanting more..
A promising beginning turns into a lengthy, and at times, frustrating mystery. It teases throughout as to what kind of cataclysm has occurred, and I actually liked how it kept you guessing. It also aptly portrays the chaos and rampant anarchy that potentially would unfold in the event of such a widespread disaster across the U.S., or any county for that matter. Kind of reminded me of the early evolution of a "Mad Max" world; with everyone chasing and killing for that precious gasoline.
The characters were ok, but a little underdone I thought, and the movie ended like the pilot of a series; leaving you with a lot questions.
