Spookies is not Spooky
21 February 2017
I wanted to like this movie but there are several problems with it:

1. It is basically two separate movies spliced together as one. The runaway kid and the party goers were never meant to be in the same film.

2. The characters are all one dimensional, 80's morons. Even the kid is a dumb ass. The drifter was the smartest character telling the kid to go home and is then killed right after which feels like the movies way of saying NO SMART CHARACTERS OR ONES WITH ANY KIND OF SUBSTANCE ALLOWED!

3. There's no backstory whatsoever. It feels like the film starts out in media res. Billy already ran away, the party goers are already driving, etc. Would have been good to see any kind of development in terms of a plot.

4. Some of the effects were good but for the most part they were sub par. By the mid eighties effects, while not as advanced as today, were still able to be so much better than what was shown here. This was an independent film so I can understand how money can be part of the problem.

5. Everybody dies. I hate horror movies where everybody dies. I'm in no way suggesting that every horror movie has to have a "We survived" happy ending. But someone surviving makes the experience all the more worth it (at least for me). Otherwise it's like, "I just watched a movie where no one survived till the end...okay."

Spookies is a film that could have been so much better if it had better writing and did not have issues between its creators and financial backers. That is the problem independent films often face. If the person(s) paying for the film to be made, who rightfully should have a say in the creative process, and the creators themselves do not get along it will effect the product.

Moustapha Akkad financially backed the movie Halloween and thus became part of the creative process. However, he wanted the film to be the best it could be as did Trancas and John Carpenter. I'm sure there were rough spots in that partnership but in the end everyone worked together to create a masterpiece that has withstood the test of time.

To sum up that last paragraph, Halloween is the success story of when financial backers and creators work cohesively and Spookies is the failure that occurs when the opposite happens. And to this date Spookies has not even received a DVD release and we're already in the 4K market. Even Troll 2, the best worst movie of all time, got a Blu Ray release.

Spookies, while it tries, ultimately does not hold up.

Marble Hornets: A Terrifying and Immersive Journey
23 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
====Spoiler Alert====

Several years ago, while scouring for Slenderman related media, following his fast rising presence on the internet and beyond, I came across Marble Hornets.

The story revolves at first around a man named Jay who discovered tapes given to him by Alex Kralie, a friend from college whom moved away three years earlier, in the back of his closet. These tapes contained bits and pieces of Alex's behind the scenes work on his student filmed (aptly named Marble Hornets). What they also contained was the presence of The Operator who seemed to be following Alex around everywhere he goes, adversely affecting him and his crew. Jay begins to investigate what was going on during the shooting of Marble Hornets and is violently thrust into a world of horrors and mysteries he could never have been prepared for.

The very first entry introduces The Operator (Marble Hornet's version of Slenderman) in a subtle yet powerful way. The moment you see that head twist you'll feel as if the monster is looking directly at you and not at the character filming it. And it is at that point you are drawn into the world of Marble Hornets forever.

I saw the Blair Witch Project in theaters when I was 11 years old and watching Marble Hornets found footage style made me feel like I was back in that theater in 1999 and still does every time I watch it. It delivers that wonderful feeling of nostalgia while simultaneously providing new thrills that will leave you on the edge of your seat as you look for The Operator in the background of every video, hoping not to see him but at the same time desperately wanting to.

The series is not without its minor flaws (abandoned plot lines, actors/actresses becoming unavailable to return, etc.) But the minor issues with it are far outweighed by the story line which does not try to be too subtle or too powerful, providing small pieces of the larger puzzle for the viewers to fill in as they go. Marble Hornets is just that: a puzzle. One that keeps drawing viewers back in to find the pieces needed to understand its intricate plot. But be prepared to have more questions at the end of each entry than answers.

Marble Hornets beauty is in its simplicity. Less is more. It doesn't go overboard with special effects save for the distortions and blending of jump cuts which are used sparingly but effectively. It is not over complicated or difficult to understand what is happening but at the same time not watered down to make it too easy to follow. While watching you will theorize, guess, and speculate what is to come next and regardless of whether you are right or wrong you will not be disappointed in the outcome.

This series is a journey that will make you feel as if you are living the events right alongside the characters. It immerses you in its reality and you become part of the story.

Eventually, you will watch Marble Hornets for the first time if you haven't already. Just be prepared to constantly look around the room or out the nearest window as every sound you hear will bring with it that sense of dread that The Operator may be near. And it is only then will you truly experience the magic that is...

Marble Hornets.

Return of the Sandman (2009 Video)

A Great Fan Film!
13 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is perhaps one of the greatest Halloween fan films I have ever seen before. It delivers all of the classic elements while adding some new twists and turns as well. An intriguing story-line continuing from where the original Halloween left off. Michael escapes from Smith's Grove following an attempt by Richard Loomis, the brother of Dr. Sam Loomis, to kill him. What follows is a night of mayhem and chaos like you would not believe. And the ending will leave you wanting more. An absolute masterpiece for the Halloween community and others to enjoy. Cannot wait to see Revenge of the Sandman. I'm sure it will be just as good as its predecessor! Happy Halloween!

Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010 Video)

Better than you think it is
13 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, a high priced, CGI filled Avatar it's not. But what this movie lacks in material stuff it makes up for with a lot of heart and soul.

As many I am a big fan of original movie (one of the best films ever. period.)and after seeing The Tribe I thought that although the franchise was back after twenty years it came back horribly. This movie remedied that for the most part. It was great seeing both Frog Brothers back on action as well as the homages to Corey Haim. The story was a bit lackluster because I felt there could've been so much more added to it. Still it did have its great moments which I really enjoyed. Lots of nostalgia and scenes that will make you laugh and some that will make you feel sad but not cry.

To put it simply: If you loved the first movie and hated the second movie, you'll most likely be pleased with Lost Boys: The Thirst because it is definitely a lot better than most crap put out there today.
