The Hangover (2009)
Fat Jesus has left the building.
Not since 1984's Bachelor Party with Tom Hanks has a good old bachelor movie come along like 'The Hangover'. Doug (Justin Bartha) is getting married and heads to Vegas for a low key bachelor party with mates Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis aka. Fat Jesus).
The night doesn't turn out as planned and they wake to find their hotel room trashed, a tiger in the bathroom, a baby in the closet and the groom missing. With no memory of what happened the rest of the movie is a hilarious trek through Vegas trying to put the pieces together.
There are no big name comedians, instead a chemistry that develops quickly between the guys which makes the comedy work, especially from Zach Galifianakis who really shines. Heather Graham is as hot as usual, and Mike Tyson has a cameo which is the only part I didn't like. A lot of improvisation can be felt through out the whole film and there are some great photo's at the end credits that looked like they really did go on a wild night in Vegas.
W. (2008)
Just two good old boys, never meanin' no harm
Oliver Stone has taken on another US President, and this time around hasn't even waited for the smoke to leave the barrel, in fact I think it was released 3 weeks before the election (he lost).
Josh Brolin brilliantly plays George W. Bush the 43rd President of the USA and Richard Dreyfuss is also great playing Vice President Dick Cheney. I'm sure we will never know the full truth of Bush's private life, but Stone does a good job in giving a general idea of what he was like, a good old boy growing up in the shadow of his father.
Not exactly what I expected from Stone, as he was very sympathetic to Bush, portraying him as a likable down to earth guy, who genuinely wanted to do something great for his country. I came out of the film really liking W.
Probably not the best choice for Presidency, but he was up against an emerging dark evil that has spread across the world and I guess he did an OK job of keeping the evil at bay (Guantanamo Bay)
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
DIDOMAN: The game is a foot
Guy Ritchie has conjured up some black magic, and given us an exciting, fun and mischievous Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) with Dr Watson (Jude Law) at his side forever getting him out of trouble. The two are great together, playing up to each other like old school room mates.
Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) is a serial killing Satanist and London is in fear of his dark powers. Holmes and Watson are hired to find the truth behind the mystery, meeting up along the way with classic characters like Irene Dunn (Rachel McAdams) and Inspector Lestrade. In Guy Ritchie, lock stock and barrel style, the action is calculated and logical, and compliments Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' vision of Sherlock Holmes as the avid boxer and martial artist, along with his powers of observation, deductive skills and master of disguise.
The recreation of 19th Century London is amazing, especially with the attention to detail as Holmes walks around a busy, bustling and growing city landscape. New fans will take to him and old fans wont be disappointed as the movie keeps to the canon set by Sir Arthur Conan Doyles' novels and stories, although there is no mention of Holmes darker side of experimentation's with drugs, but maybe that comes later, along with newer foes to catch in the franchise to follow.
Being a big Sherlock Holmes fan I loved it, but I would say even new fans who know nothing of the famous character will like this fresh update on the old Holmes, and hopefully get some kids out there to pick up a book and delve deeper... The Game is a Foot
Fung wan II (2009)
DIDOMAN: Too much Pang for Your Buck - Over the top
The sequel to Storm Riders, the Chinese comic-adapted movie that broke box office records in 1998, Storm Warriors defiantly delivers more 'Pang' for your buck this time around. Based on the comic 'Fung Wan' we see the return of pop idols Ekin Cheng & Aaron Kwok who are huge teen idols sensations in Asia, although they are now much older than when the first movie came out. But I guess their audience is too.
From the opening scene...BANG... We get right into it; There are Fireballs, Flying swords and a lot of graceful martial arts for arts saké thrown in, and a few Sakés will go down well before watching the movie as it it full on and getting in the right mood with some mates will be best as this 100% action CGI OverLord of a movie is geared more towards a younger crowd.
I found the BIG orchestra soundtrack was set to OverKill throughout the entire movie, but with an epic battle scene nearly every 5min, it's expected and a little full on, I needed to come up for some air but couldn't as a new fight scene was just around the corner.
I particularly liked the Streetfighter-esq still shots placed mid battle that moved across the screen just like the video game.
The plot had Elements of Chinese folk lore and a sexy cast like Chu Chu (Yan Tang), it's got it all. A little full on for myself, but the Nintendo generation (old & new) will love it.
