Kate & Leopold (2001)
Modern fairy tale
I watched this movie for the first time when I was a high school student. I am not a big fan of fantasy films, but this is so exciting. At first I thought this is love romance story by seeing the jacket, but actually this is a kind of the love comedy. Leopold, the duke who lives in 1870's, and Kate, the woman who lives in 21st century are very different in a way of living and clothes. They happen to meet each other and fall in love. They often have quarrels and their conversations are humorous. Leopold is very handsome. I think most audience would fall in love with him. And his costumes are superb. He seems to be a real duke of 18th century. I like not only Leoplod but also Kate's brother, Charlie. He is very funny. I think he plays an important role in the film. Without him, Kate and Leopold would not be united.
Léon (1994)
I was so moved
I do love this movie. This has speedy plot development, so I never got tired of watching. Any details of Leon are not described in the film. But it is gradually revealed that he is alone and a professional killer. I was surprised to watch him sleeping while sitting. It must be tough. At first, Leon tries to kill a fat man. In that scene, you hear the heartbeats of the close man and this makes you nervous. Leon gets close to him and put the knife on the men's neck. His heartbeats stops and there are no sound at that time. I gasped at this scene. Matilda, the heroine of this film, is also a lonely although she has a family. Leon refuses her offer to practicing killing at first, but he cherishes her little by little. They spend the time not only practicing killing but also playing and studying and eating. The scenes of Matilda disguises herself as various famous persons is one of my favorite scenes. Of course she is cute, but Leon, wondering who Matilda is imitating is also so cute. They are not on good terms at first. But Leon buys pretty clothes to Matilda. Matilda teaches reading and writing to Leon. They squirt water at each other...they look like real father and daughter day by day. Gary Oldman is one of main characters in this film. He is a merciless man and I was very disgusted at the way he speaks and acts! I hope Leon or Matilda kill him as soon as possible throughout. The climax scene when Oldman mobilizes all the troops is so exciting. The camera-works of this scene is marvelous. I re-winded a film and watched this scene many times. It is very thrilling. When Leon lets Matilda go, I feel very sad. Leon's survival relieves me but at last he dies. Their dream that to live together peacefully could not come true, but the last scene, Matilda plants Leon's precious plant in a field shows a certain positive perspective, doesn't it?
Frequency (2000)
Son's wish
There are some points I do not accept in this film, but I like this. One day, John, who lost his father years ago, contacts his father all of a sudden. His father, Frank is a firefighter. They have conversation beyond time and space. So John decides to save his father from the accident that he dies of. For John's advice, Frank is able to survive fire in the building. It is interesting that changes Frank makes affects the present. For instance, after Frank survived a fire, the newspaper article John has changes. And at the John's study, when Frank puts out his cigarette on his desk, a tiny ruins of a fire appears on the desk John is sitting. I was glad to see his parents are alive and they can live peacefully. But owing to change of the past, a colleague of his mother is killed instead of her. I was sorry for the woman. If John did not change the past, she would not be killed... However, John's desire to save his parents moves me to tears. I want to watch it again.
Drive (2011)
silent driver
A mysterious driver, Ryan Gosling become involved in danger owing to helping his neighbor.
He does not talk so much. So you need to imagine how he is thinking at each scene. Action scenes are compelling. But it is little too grotesque for me. If there are no scenes like them, I would watch this again and again. There are no scenes that he shows his mind or declares his love to Irene. However, I could see he cherishes her and her son from his movements. The kissing scene is bit boring, but his acting is so great. And I have one question for the ending. He kills the opponent and runs away by driving bleeding from his stomach heavily. I think he never meets his beloved person again but I wonder whether he survives. Of course, It depends on the audience. For me, I think he is still alive...
The Intern (2015)
Old fashioned man
After I finished watching this movie, I immediately want to make friends with Ben. Robert De Niro is the perfect for the role of him. Ben is gentle and intelligent. He is old-fashioned but become loved by every co-workers Jules, Anne Hathaway, is a entrepreneur and a mother. I laughed at her cycling in the office. She tries to be perfect both in the office and the house. But she gives more weight to the job, so her husband does housework. Still working women are not so popular. It is pathetic that Jules is looked coldly by other mothers. Her effort for balancing work, childcare and marital relations are very tough. She never whines about her job and home, but she only does in front of Ben. He just listens to her without saying nothing. Their relationship is charming. It makes me notice that you can be friends with anybody without regard to age or sex.
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
heartwarming
The fact that this story is true surprised me. While I want Carl to catch Frank as soon as possible, I do want Frank to manage to run away. At the beginning, Frank's past are drawn. Without these scenes, you only hate him throughout. But due to it, the audience unconsciously wish he manages to run away from Carl. I admire Frank's quick wits. The scene that he tries to perform an operation though he is not a doctor is very funny. At the scene of the previous night of Frank and Brenda's wedding makes me cry. She believes he is innocent. This scene is the most beautiful for me. Finally, frank is arrested but for Carl's consideration, he is able to have an opportunity to start over. I like happy ending like this.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
To believe what your lover say
Before I watched this film, I had already known the ending because it is too famous. But I enjoyed this very mush. I had thought this is just a horror movie. However, this contains a lot about family and love. The first murder scene is very breathtaking. Actually Malcolm is dead, but the audience never doubt it because he continues his usual life. So the fact is unknown for every body except for Cole, the boy who can see ghosts. This boy is clue to all of the story. A lot of hints that Malcolm is already dead exists in the film but you cannot notice them at all because the camera-work is so great. When the boy's mother meets Malcolm, they seems to see each other although she actually does not see him. This film is enjoyable as you can get new discoveries every time you watch this. This movie brings up several issues and teaches about how family are. At first Cole's mother cannot believe his words and scolds him, but she finally believes him and is ashamed of her. Malcolm also doubt his wife's affair, but finally notices his death and his wife still loves him. The ending is very painful but great, I think.
The Notebook (2004)
Romantic story?
I was absorbed in watching by the first half. Noah, starring as Ryan Gosling, and Allie, starring as Rachel McAdams's love scenes are very romantic. Their separation is so pitiful and makes me be anxious about what would happen after this.
Allie gets a new boyfriend after she separates from Noah. This guy is very good man and they become engaged to each other. But Allie sees Noah again by chance. They still love each other, so Allie starts wavering between two men. I got annoyed at her indecisive attitude. Moreover, she takes it out on Noah and her mother. It is James, her fiancé, that the sorriest person.
At the end, Allie and Noah get married but she has dementia. She cannot remember Noah and her children. I think there was no need for making she have dementia.
Rush (2013)
Dangerous but cool
First, I was astonished that the actors looks very like Niki Lauda and James Hunt respectively. It is impossible to cast other actors for those characters. The scenes of racing are definitely breathtaking. In addition to it, the conflicts between them are attractive. They hate each other but also respect and set a target of beating the opponent. Racing is dangerous, and Niki suffers a fatal injury during the race. Niki should stops racing but the existence of James makes him come back to the car racing. His wife, Marlene's supports and her expressions makes a deep impression. After the Niki's press conference of his comeback Hunt beats one of the journalists. It shows he actually treasures Niki as his best rival and friend. Ilove this scene the best.
3 Idiots (2009)
Never let the dream die
I was so moved at this film. There are three college students. They are studying about engineering. But Farhan, as a narrator in the film, prefers taking photos of animals to engineering. In India, it is said that men are expected to be an engineer and women are a doctor. So Farhan gives up his dream. One day, an genius boy enters this college and made friends with Farhan and another main character, Raju. He is Rancho. His pet phrase is 'Aal izz well'. He is very good at engineeing and does not hesitate to say his thoughts or opinions to anybody who has wrong ideas. Both Farhan and Raju gradually trust him. As this is a Bollywood film, the scenes of musical are shown. Their dancing is very cheerful and energetic. This film teaches us what learning is. Some people thinks entering a great school is a goal. Some people thinks they have to be an ideal man or woman as the parents wish you to be. But Rancho has doubts about them. He thinks it is most important to cherish your dream. So he helps Farhan to make himself to be honest to his father, and Farhan can manage to tell his true feelings and becomes a photographer at last. I love Raju's attitude for leaning. He does not care about the grade in test or academic background at all. He purely loves to learn. I could not stand crying at his sincerity. This film is not only serious but also hilarious, so makes me laugh often. The ending is very very great. I want to watch this film again and again. And I try to keep the phrase in mind 'Aal Izz Well'.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
What a clever man
I could not predict how the ending would be. The story is very interesting. This film's characters do not say any words. However, I could understand what the main character or the girl are thinking of from their expressions. I think that not only the main characters but also supporting players, play an important role in the film. Their acting shows the same feelings as people who watch this film. I mean we can share the feelings with them in the film. I am curious about what will happen next in this film between the main character and the girl due to-such an ending. This film would not have a sequel but makes me expect that it will make one.
Head Over Heels (2012)
Make the slang visible
At first I could not understand their circumstances, the man is being tugged to the sky and his lifestyle is upside sown for some reason or other. Though there are no explanation about explanation about it, I know he would fly through the air like a balloon if he does not use the wheelchair. Their strange way of life attracted me and made me want to know how this movie would end. The interior of the house is unique. For example, the woman finishes using the refrigerator, she moves it to the ceiling by her foot. And the man can use it. There are two kitchens. It is funny that their fried egg are exchanged by tossing them over. This is the one of important scenes that the audience can notice this two's living is very odd. The woman can move in the house and use the furniture as usual as you can. However, the man could not so, so he is riding on the wheelchair that is connected to the ceiling. I thought they are on bad terms with each other at the beginning because they do not have a conversation and never meet their eyes. But I could find they love each other by the scene that they are eager to correct the photo of their marriage again and again. Keeping the photo proves that they are not on the bad terms but they are not able to communicate with each other well. The title of this movie has double meanings. The first is the slang for great love. And the second meaning is literal. This movie embodies the phrase "head over heels". I was very touched by the last scene. I wish they can live happily after that.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
What is family?
This film is short, but contains a lot about what a family is. David, an English teacher, and Keiko are married but they do not have a child. The photo stand of only this husband and wife tells us it though there are no explanations about it. Why they do not have children is unknown, but the that scene showing Keiko's wound teaches us something unfortunate ha occurred to her before for childbirth. This scene does not have mush dialogue but their expressions are very sensitive and it enables us to notice that they are not getting along. This story that the couple can find what is the most needed thing for them and the husband notice how precious his partner is through living with a little boy for a few days is very heartful. i want to know how Mrs Yamada will be after that.
Tootsie (1982)
Like a real woman
This movie is breathtaking. I was wondering when Michael's true identity come out to others. I think this is a kind of suspense movie because the audience knows that Dorothy and Michael are the same person, but other characters in this film do not know this fact. The most impressive scene for me was that Dorothy comes back home after shopping and said being a woman is tough. Michael was selfish and seemed to be poor at treating woman until he started to disguise himself as an woman. He realizes how women are different from him and how they make an effort to keep themselves beautiful and attractive by putting on makeup and dressing up. Through pretending to be Dorothy, he becomes sensitive to how Julie or Sandy feels. The scene when Dorothy tries to hail a taxi by Michael's deep voice makes me laugh. His avoiding kissing from John and dancing with Julie's father are also amusing. This is because we can see that these men do not notice Dorothy is a man and predict how their reactions would be when they know his identity.
Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (2002)
Terrible but humorous
This movie is fiction but seems real. I think it is because this movie shows the interviews with the boss and Terry Tate. Without these scenes, it might look like a more artificial one. The idea is very hilarious that an American football player is hired at the company and enforces the rules. I think what makes this movie more interesting is he could notice how small breaking rules he or she done and he imposes punishment on them regardless of sex. Though watching him tackle anybody who breaks a rule makes us feel good. If a person like him is in real life, I will be scared of going to the office. However, some people would want to employ him after watching this as the number of people who are irritated by those actions are not at all small. This movie would be useful for making people realize and correct their wrong behavior.
Father and Daughter (2000)
There was no dialogue but...
This film does not have any dialogue, but I could understand its story visibly. At first I could not see why the father leaves his daughter, but now I know what his disappearance implies. A few colors are used in the film, so it looks like a shadow picture. And the long shadows of the characters and trees are impressive for me. They made me feel melancholy. The planitive music also did so. I like this movie but there is one point that I can not understand. It is the scene when the daughter could meet her father again. She is returning to the figure of a young woman. Why did she not morph into the girl, who was separated from her father. If the scene is made like this, I might be moved more.
