The American Society of Magical Negroes (2024)
Anvilicious
The promotion made it look like it was going to be a lighthearted and satirical movie. While there are certainly a few moments of that, and the movie does not shy away from a strong "Take That!" to movies like the legend of bagger Vance and the green mile. It ends up being a much more serious movie than expectations going in. Also the middle part gets bogged down a little with some fairly common romcom clichés. But the message is very strong; racism does not just mean prejudism and hatred. It can be the acceptance of a paradigm of privilege and a lack of empathy. So a little bit of slow pacing can be overlooked for a strong message and a solid finish.
Chicago Party Aunt (2021)
Great Show! Particularly if you know Chicago!
Good cast of characters with lots of good humor. While it does throw in a lot of Chicago clichés, there are also a lot of subtle things to watch out for as well. Lauren Ash nails the essence of Chicago with Diane, a middle-aged woman living a life of somebody 20 years younger than her, yet also 20 years behind the times. Despite her crazy ways others around her actually seem to be living in the real world and recognize how outlandish she is, yet like her anyway. The show also does a good job of actually maintaining continuity with plot threads lasting several episodes and numerous important callbacks. Netflix has a bad habit of canceling shows after just two seasons, hopefully this one gets a shot at a couple more.
The Bubble (2022)
Funny period piece
It won't take long for this movie to get stale, and it does go just a little bit long. But many of the scenes are very funny, the premise is good and original, and it's a good cast of characters. Definitely an entertaining watch.
Half Brothers (2020)
Part Wacky Comedy, Part Drama, Part Political Statement
This movie was certainly advertised as a wacky comedy, but in reality only has a few scenes where that would be the case. Much of it is a rather serious and at times sad drama about two men who lost a father they both viewed very differently. Then there are some very strong political statements about how Mexicans are treated by Americans. It ranges from condescending attitudes that Americans must think that Mexicans worship America. The condescending attitude that Americans think Mexico is just like all the tourist traps on the beaches. To outright hostility as Mexicans are grossly mistreated by Border Patrol. It's not subtle. Certainly not one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, but definitely interesting.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020)
Perfect Movie for these Times!
I watched the this skeptical that I was going to see a lot of recycled gags and that it would come across as a desperate attempt to revive a character that should be left in the past. Instead this movie goes in a completely different direction and the satire is absolutely perfect for the year 2020.
Rising Phoenix (2020)
Amazing Athletes
It's great to see these amazing athletes, and the people who started and continue to run the Paralympics, get the attention they deserve. I hope everyone remembers to watch Tokyo 2021 and Beijing 2022!
La Balada de Hugo Sanchez (2018)
A solid After Show
Hugo does well as the lead and some new characters (along with a few old) step up and make this a solid show with some very funny moments.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Great Action Film
Most western zombie films are pretentious and take themselves too seriously. This is just a good old action movie that'll keep you riveted once you get past the rather slow opening.
Patriot Games (1992)
Weakest of the Early 90's Trilogy
Good action scenes, more focus on Jack, and Harrison Ford was an improvement over Alec Baldwin. But with it being so personal between Jack and Sean it lacked the political intrigue of most Tom Clancy works. Plus the entire plot hinges on Jack remembering seeing a woman in a car for a split second during intense action.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
The world needs a person like Mr. Rogers right now.
This movie shows what a real superhero is actually like.
The Founder (2016)
The Wrong Man is Portrayed as the Villain!
First and foremost this is a great movie that shows the foundations of a part of culture thoroughly ingrained in society.
However the movie makes Ray Kroc out to be a ruthless shark who took advantage of two honest wholesome innovators.
BUT, remember that the brothers were taking zero risk, doing no work, and had all the control. Meanwhile Ray put up all the money and busted his behind to get the operation going. After everyone but Ray is making out well the brothers wouldn't even hear him out when he asks for a modest increase just so he won't lose his house. Had he not had a chance encounter where he learned about the real estate loophole he likely would've been ruined while the brothers would've continued to profit off of all of his efforts.
Ray himself states he's a ruthless dog eat dog man who'd put a hose in the mouth of his drowning competitor. BUT not once does he engage in any illegal or unethical business practices. He treats his franchisees with respect, and he promotes people whom he'd worked with for years, including his former secretary at a time when that was all but unheard of for a woman. He even agrees to buyout the brothers for $2 million even though he could've crushed them.
Since the brothers had taken no risk that is one heck of a payoff for what was essentially a licensing agreement and finders fee for the speedee system.
Runaway Train (1985)
A Masterpiece WAY Ahead it's it's Time!
The movie unfortunately did not do well upon its release since it was much more cerebral and thought-provoking than the average 80s macho action film. However it stood the test of time very well and may be Jon Voight's finest work which is saying a lot. A great mix of action and drama with interesting characters and great scenery thrown in as well. A must see.
Perfect Harmony (2019)
Not what America needs
An East Coast elitist snob coming to a small rural town full of country yokels? A tired old cliché and not exactly what a divided country needs right now.
