Charmed: Pilot (2018)
Not bad, but it didn't hook me
So I like that this reboot is a true retelling of the original. The same basic premise is there, but everything else is new. I was excited to learn the one of the sisters can read minds and I wish the other sisters had different powers.
I'm curious to learn why the oldest sister was given up. I hope they address that soon.
Also I thought the pilot was way rushed. I want to see more tension and less fluff.
Good job with making one of the sisters a lesbian and the inclusion of women of color. The feminist may be a little too full of hatred for men for me to find her palatable, but that just means I may get to see her character grow into a better person if I continue to watch this series.
Overlord (2018)
Zombies seem like more of a subplot, dissappointing
More of a drama/war movie than the zombie flick I was hoping for.
Cabin Fever (2016)
Wouldst thou like the taste of cheese?
When this film began, I genuinely thought it was a horror-comedy. As the film progressed, i realized it was just a cheesy movie that was not intended to funny, which makes me sad.
Frozen (2010)
If you are a fan of survival flicks and gore, don't miss this!
The scene where the guy breaks his legs was horrific . . . watching these people freeze to death was also horrifying. The wolves were just kind of "meh" to me, probably because I know it is more likely for me to break my legs or freeze to death than be eaten by wolves. Good movie, very tense, and not one I plan on revisiting. I wouldn't call it enjoyable, but definitely intense!
The House That Jack Built (2018)
The movie that made me give up completely on Lars von Trier
I made it through about a quarter of this movie. The scenes with Uma Thurman were amusing, I will give it that. But Jack was boring. The storytelling was boring. We were given no background on Jack's second victim other than that she often walks down the street. Jack is not "brilliant." He is not "interesting." I have attempted to watch three Lars von Trier films now, and I was unable to finish this one and Nymphomaniac. I did finish Antichrist, but I was unimpressed. I honestly think that anyone who likes von Trier likes "finding meaning" in things that don't actually have a meaning - they are pulling importance and meaning out of their butts. Also, he is clearly a misogynist.
Summer of 84 (2018)
Not really horror until the climax and finish
That being said, the climax and finish were excellent. The rest of the movie was only mildly interesting to me, it seemed to take too long for anything to actually happen in my opinion. Worth a one time watch.
Pyewacket (2017)
Ending was a shocker for me
I thought this movie was a really fun, spooky film . . . and then I saw the conclusion. Mind. Blown. My interpretation is that Pyewacket tricked Leah into killing her own mother, which both completed Leah's task and caused her pain. I would still call it fun if the ending had been more positive. Worth a watch if you enjoy atmosphere, sympathetic characters (the mother mostly) and (IMO) atypical endings.
La nuit a dévoré le monde (2018)
For Someone Who Appreciates Character Studies and Very Little Action
I admit I had to skip through this film, and I don't regret it. About a half hour in I was like "OK, I get it" and then . . . nothing else happened. The main character is still stuck in Paris. He meets someone else but still nothing happens. This movie is all about watching someone cope when just leaving your home is too dangerous and you are one of only a handful of humans left on earth. Interesting for some, but just not what I personally look for in a zombie flick.
Revenge (2017)
The title says it all
A woman is raped, then offered to be paid off in exchange for her silence and relocation to Canada. She declines, so her lover pushes her off a cliff. She miraculously survives by thinking on her feet and using her resources, then starts picking off the three men who tried to treat her like a piece of meat and who are complicit in her attempted murder. A very satisfying, bloody, violent tale of revenge. I also appreciated that the rape scene wasn't too graphic, as those scenes are one of the more disturbing subjects to watch in my opinion.
Assassination Nation (2018)
In Your Face
Speaking as a feminist and young woman, I LOVED this movie. I loved the inclusion of transwomen and women of color. I loved that this movie showed women defending/protecting themselves. I loved the stark reality of a lot of the comments made by characters in this film to defend their hatred, bigotry, and misogyny - without them even realizing that is what they are doing. Bigots and misogynists DO NOT realize that is what they are. To them, their actions are totally justified. While I don't anticipate anything as extreme as what happened in this film to happen during my lifetime, I think it is something that COULD happen and that does happen on a smaller scale.
Not only did this movie provide commentary on gender roles, it also tackled the pervasiveness of online media, both private and public. It is true that what you put online, private or not, has the potential to become public. I believe South Park did an episode on this as well, so if this is a topic that interests you I suggest you check that episode out.
Halloween (2018)
Fun sequel
Really fun to watch, was more enjoyable for me than the original. I loved watching all three generations of women come together to defeat Michael. To me it was like seeing all the women who just get killed off like pieces of neat in slasher films get their due.
Ich seh, Ich seh (2014)
One scene kept this movie from being good for me
WTF did I just watch? What was with that scene of the mom in the woods? If it weren't for that scene, I would say this was a pretty good movie. It seems like that scene was thrown in just to throw the viewer off. I really wanted to like this movie, but that scene just made the whole thing bizarre. Can I watch this again with that scene thrown out, please?
Day of the Dead (1985)
Excellent
Great action zombie flick. I loved the portrayal of toxic masculinity and misogyny throughout this film. I loved Bob, the intelligent zombie and I look forward to seeing how the rest of the series handles the concept. This film is pretty much non-stop action, the zombies were interesting, and I could feel the tense, trying-to-feel-your-way-around-in-the-dark atmosphere.
Cube (1997)
Great movie, almost gave it a 10
This movie has everything you want in a thriller - it makes you tense, it makes you want to look away, it makes you cringe, it makes you think, it makes you care. Watching these individuals figure out the cube was fascinating. By the end of the movie, I was fully invested in Worth, Leaven, and Kazan. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because of that crappy ending. Quentin popping back up was NOT for me. I was perfectly content thinking of him growing even more insane and then eventually dying in the cube. Instead, he stabs Leaven in the back and Worth gives up his own chance at freedom to save Kazan and kill Quentin. I would have preferred all three of them had made it out alive.
That being said, I do appreciate that this film is basically saying that we all suffer when we don't look at the big picture. If you are only concerned with yourself and don't think about the impact your work can have on a larger scale, it will mean disaster for our race.
M.F.A. (2017)
Excellent
A harsh look at rape culture in the U.S. Some things I particularly appreciated were the presence of a female promoting rape culture (Sanders) and the portrayal of the rapists. They weren't shown as obvious villains, or as men who couldn't find a willing participant. To take from Noelle's words, they just decide where they want to stick their dicks and then stick them there with no thought to what their actions mean (rape) or to the victim's well being. Honestly I loved Noelle. Do I think all rapists should be murdered? I don't know. I don't think I would mourn their loss, but I'm also not sure if I think it's OK to outright make rape a capital offense. For now, I'm neutral.
American Psycho (2000)
Couldn't finish it
Not for me. I have to like at least one of the characters in order to enjoy a movie, and I couldn't find one in this film. Story seems ok, and I get that this movie is supposed to be making a bigger statement, but I just couldn't stick with it.
Peeping Tom (1960)
So good!!!
I watched this in conjunction with Psycho, and I have to say I prefer this one. I was able to connect with the characters in Peeping Tom, I got more information about the killer, I could feel his insanity. I think his use of the camera to both record his victims and as a murder weapon was very interesting. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of movies about serial killers.
Get Out (2017)
Great flick
I really liked this movie. I thought it had a lot to say about current day racism. The white people in this film viewed black people as physically valuable but did not recognize any value in their minds or any other aspect of their beings. The quote "black is in fashion" indicates that black people are just a commodity for white people to use - and in this film, they do use them in the extreme.
I loved the ending, I loved the kill scenes, I loved the feeling of being trapped that this movie made me feel. I was able to really sympathize with Chris (as much as a white woman can) and I loved that he felt fleshed out as a character. I liked him as a person, and I felt this made me better able to empathize with him.
This was my second viewing and I have to say I really appreciated the "something's not right" hints portrayed by Georgina, Walter, and Logan, as well as the white people in this film, more the second time around. For me, knowing the reason behind the odd behavior made it that much more horrific for me.
My only problems with this film were the use of hypnotism because I just don't buy that it could be that powerful, the use of neurosurgery because there are too many holes there like how were memories and personality transferred in tact to the other person, and I felt the comedic aspect the character Rod brought to the film did not fit in with the overall plot. As much as I appreciate horror comedy, it did not work for me in this particular film.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Good one
I was tense throughout this entire movie. There were some jump scares thrown in, but what really had my heart racing was just the anticipation of what they would find next during this autopsy. I personally would have preferred her being an actual witch from the start, as opposed to Tommy's theory that she was innocent until she was tortured. While the idea that the pilgrims created what they feared by torturing an innocent is an interesting one and I do appreciate it, it just isn't my preference.
I have to admit I absolutely loved the autopsy scenes in the beginning of the movie. It's the gore lover in me, what can I say?
This is probably my favorite movie thus far depicting Christian-based witches, perhaps because of the lack of emphasis on the religion. I also liked that this movie was mostly shot in one location as it made the feeling of being trapped even more palpable. This movie teases you by making you expect something like the body to move or something more to appear in the hallway mirror and then it doesn't give it to you. The atmosphere here was as intimate as it was frightening.
There was at least one glaring plot hole for me. How did Emma get down in morgue when Tommy and Austin were trapped? Did the witch let her in? Why? Emma hadn't "tortured" Jane Doe, so why attack her? Am I missing something?
The ending was a bit of a let-down for me. As I've stated in previous posts I like for there to be at least some semblance of hope at the end. Also I could see a lot of the events coming during the climax, as well as the toe twitch at the end. All in all though it was a fun, interesting film and I would definitely recommend watching it at least once.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
So much fun!
This movie is hilarious. Such a fun watch. I loved all of the characters and how they interacted with one another. Vampires are an old favorite of mine and it was great being able to laugh at the day-to-day lives of five vampires. I loved how Deacon was so casual about how Petyr turned him into a vampire, to the point where they had been living together for who knows how long. I also loved Vladislav's backstory - not about his ex, but about how badass he used to be. Viago was of course just a goofball. This film had me laughing throughout, I would definitely recommend it.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
A favorite of mine
This is one of my favorite movies. I don't know how many times I've seen it and it's still so much fun to watch. Good things it's on Netflix, though I will probably cave and buy it at some point.
The leads are hilarious and adorable. I love their friendship and personalities. The college friends are clearly idiots and definitely make you think about the way people sometimes react in slasher films. I find it highly amusing that it's not in fact the "murderous hillbillies" but their own fear, prejudices, and assumptions that lead to their deaths.
One of my favorite scenes is probably the one where Tucker is having a mini breakdown because a bunch of college kids "are killing themselves all over his property."
P.S. Rumor has it there is sequel in the works
Cam (2018)
Started off great
For me this movie started off really strong, then lost it at the end. The climax for me was anticlimactic. I loved the premise, but I would have preferred more detail on how the girls were actually copied. Also, why would she stay in that business after that happened? Are all the other girls who were copied dead? I assume so ... so why would she remain in a life threatening situation? Will her relationship with her brother get better? Will whoever is copying girls just get away with it? Does Barney fit in somehow? Too many unanswered questions. Like I said, awesome premise, poor execution for last quarter of the movie or so.
