Oppenheimer (2023)
Overdone
I thoroughly disliked the directing of this movie. It was way too long, had a confusing, pinball timeline. There was unnecessarily tense music throughout, turning every mundane interaction into a high stakes anxiety fest. The dialogue is awkwardly terse. Overall, it's an unenjoyable experience. What ever happened to just telling a story?? This feels like an over-produced caricature of a Hollywood movie.
Like all movies, the dialogue is too quiet, and the music and explosions are too loud.
I'm sure this just sounds like a rant to many of you. Feel free to ignore it you disagree. I just wanted to share my opinion.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
stereotypical sports movie, but chess (and not a movie)
Imagine your standard, come-from-behind, feel-good sports movie, but with chess. The plot isn't exactly the same, but it's just as banal. In spite of being 5 times longer, its characters are just as shallow. The way they briefly touch on racism/sexism/addiction seem designed more to score brownie points and support the audience's sense of moral superiority than engage the audience in any form of critical thinking. What little chess they show in this series seems wildly unrealistic, from the rapid-fire moves to the clapping during play. I had trouble believing someone who looks 28 playing a 13-year-old character.
But hey, the cinematography is great, and like those cheesy sports movies, you can count on a warm fuzzy feeling at the end.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Takes away from the series' ending
The movie's ok. Not great, not bad, but it takes away from the perfect ending in the TV series. I already know you're going to watch the movie, because... Breaking Bad... But maybe there's one person out there who I can convince to just let it be. Enjoy the series for its cinematic perfection and resist the urge to taint it with this less-than-Breaking-Bad addendum.
Iverson (2014)
more proselytizing for Iverson's sainthood than documentary
You were probably deceived by the media's portrayal of a brash, conceited, ball-hog. In reality, Allen Iverson was a saint. A sadly misunderstood saint. With his nightly miracles on the hardwood captured on tape for all eternity, there can be no doubt. Pope Francis, are you listening?
Baby Driver (2017)
Shallow characters, but great music and entertaining action
First off, given that the movie is centered around a completely ridiculous premise (that driving really fast is the way to get away with crime), I came in with low expectations, which is good, because you won't find much here in terms of character depth or development. The plot is Hollywood at its "finest" (good guy beats bad guy and gets/saves helpless girl). But the action is very entertaining, the dialog is mildly funny (again, don't over-analyze it (and by "over", I mean "at all")), and the soundtrack is fantastic (thank you Guardians of the Galaxy for inspiring this). So if you're looking for a bit of brainless entertainment, consider Baby Driver.
Icarus (2017)
Confusing (lack of) plot, but fascinating and informative!
While watching the movie, it's very unclear what Bryan Fogel is trying to accomplish. Why does he decide to take PEDs? What's the ultimate goal? Where is the movie actually headed? Why would Grigory want to have anything to do with Fogel, let alone coach him and end up trusting him with his safety and security? But if you can put all that aside, the information is stunning and will change the way you look at sports. Well worth a watch!
