Jessica Jones (2015)
What a waste of air time
God this is a horrible. I feel so sorry that Tennant agreed to do this show. Get Kilgrave into another story line like Luke Cage somehow and round-file this show. I cannot believe they canned Agent Carter and kept this tripe. The writing is mediocre at its best. Ritter's acting capabilities are clearly overwhelmed even by this highly underdeveloped character; and the plot is either missing, erratic, or downright boring. No spoilers, but the racism and sexism are fully revealed in the second episode with a phrase during a certain interaction (no spoilers) where Jessica's strength is established because she can endure it. That's how we're establishing this character's strength? WOW. Um...OK. And every one still gave it 8 stars... Yeah, I'm a David Tennant fan too, but Good God. It's not worth wading through the sewers of this show to get the few shining moments Kilgrave or Luke Cage appear. Luke Cage has his own show now. This waste of air time is no longer relevant. Bring back Agent Carter!
Friends from College (2017)
What "Friends" Would Have REALLY Been Like
Finally, a show that doesn't paint a rosy picture of old friends and the 'fresh new face' of 40. X'ers and X/Y cusps are hitting a time of change where they're dealing with a very different 40's than their parents, major choices being made later in life due to hard knocks from the failing economy, dot-bomb, and recession; and trying to weather this "40 is the new 20" crap. Many people are saying that these friends are hard to relate to because they went to Harvard. I went to my 10 year high school reunion. It was like this. It was both shameful and hilarious at the same time. "Friends" was what we wanted our long term friends aka "framily" to be. "Friends From College" is the dirty reality of it. They're messy and flawed and have the same fears many of us do - finally ready to have kids and can't, outgrowing marriages, delusions about long term 'crushes' and how childish that can be, etc. Nostalgia can be helpful, but also devastating to real life and sometimes you need to realize you've outgrown people. Seeing them struggle with a new decade in their lives, new challenges, and their immaturity is kind of refreshing. I'm SO sick of seeing perfect friendships. And women who've been friends for longer than 10 years who miraculously don't secretly hate each other or have a hidden jealousy. Yeah right. Also interesting...I know 5 people who have trashed this show...they are just like the people in the show. There are some great comedic scenes in here and I think the cast is pretty darn great. Seeing Fred Savage's character celebrating his 40th birthday...that one stung a little and heightened the point of the show. We're a generation upset about getting older, running out of time, or both. While I did not attend a private college, it was still easy to map their experiences over to something I can relate to, and I can say that they act out feelings I keep inside and I laugh at their consequences. I think it has potential and everyone needs to lighten up.
What the Health (2017)
Highly Biased, not factual. *Potential Spoilers*
While I appreciate the views and opinions in this documentary, there's no reason to participate in scaremongering. The purpose of a good documentary is to back up your thesis with actual evidence and claims. Many of the reports they cite are not by certified professionals, are from articles that were quickly rebutted as soon as they were published. Also, these alternative perspectives were not fully addressed or expressed. If you're quoting a highly rebutted article, be honest and reveal that. Additionally, there are several factors that prevent conclusive scientific data on dairy and meat alone: 1. First world countries' addiction to over-processed food, caffeine, sugar (this does include agave, honey, and "raw" sugar), and carbonated beverages - which are all known to affect cholesterol, bone density, and pancreas function, 2. The effects of pollution on the human body, 3. Whether or not the subjects were previous smokers of any substances whatsoever, 4. Alcohol consumption, 5. Elevated stress levels in first world countries due to increased work hours and a significant decrease in employees who actually use their vacation time, 6. Access to preventative healthcare, 7. The average amount of sleep of the study group (lack of sleep is conclusively linked to diabetes and obesity), and 8.Expanding the study to consumption of egg-whites versus whole eggs. I personally did not see anything on that. This is a hypothesis at best and not the concrete scientific study the documentary proposes. It's incredibly misleading and over the top. I agree with dialing back on meat. You only need a very small amount to get the protein you need for an entire day. The same goes with fat free dairy - I'm not disputing that. But to run a shock piece about meat and dairy on evidence that is questionable at best is a direct contradiction to what a documentary should be. This was a waste of time and a sad perpetuation of the stereotype that vegans are reactionary and will say anything to guilt-trip people who do not think their way is best. It's unfortunate. A lost opportunity, and a horrible film.
