Lykkeland (2018)
Brilliant!
Terrific casting and acting and a brilliantly sympathetic storyline centred around Stavanger. Incredibly accurate. My brother and his Norwegian wife were brought together when they moved to Stavanger along with all the other 'oil' folk. No longer a sleepy, religious fishing town! Many a fine vacation there!
After Life (2019)
Brilliant!
Brilliant, sharp Ricky Gervais at his best. Darkly humorous. An easy binge watch with enough of a storyline to keep you going. You can tell that he's written and directed it. Well done that man!
The White Lotus (2021)
Grindingly slow.
It has excellent write-ups so I've given it a few goes. I really cannot see why. It is grindingly slow. Somebody explain why the good reviews?? I'm clearly missing something.
The Tourist (2022)
Really rather good
I'm not entirely sure if I'm reviewing the same thing, looking at most of the others who are panning it. The characters are great and well cast...with a bit of humour here and there. Possibly Brit and Aussie humour that some wouldn't appreciate or get. It is laughing at certain stereotypes in a humorous way.
No matter, a vast improvement on a lot of dramas that the BBC have churned out over the last few years. They have to. They're competing with Netflix and ITV who are releasing some good stuff.
Stay Close (2021)
Slow start but stick with it.
Slow start but improves dramatically after episode 1. There's too much good stuff around to watch rubbish and I tend to leave it rather than persevere, but as it has James Nesbitt, Sarah Parrish and Eddie Izzard I'm pleased that I did. I can see why it has 8 episodes - generally British productions don't drag it out as some US productions do, so I'm hoping that this is the case.
