The Last Days of Pompeii (1984)
Can I buy this miniseries or not?
I would buy this version of Last Days of Pompeii if it were available. The acting and writing were uneven but some was quite good. But what really sold me was, as I remember, it had the most spectacular and most accurate sets of any historical movie or show of this period. Good special effects of the volcanic explosion too. Lavish sets and effects are not uncommon but accuracy is rare and that really makes the show much more interesting. This show beats many other shows of this genre such as "AD" and "Empire".
I've seen obscure series and shows offered for sale on amazon, shows like "Quark" and "Get Smart Again" that few have heard of. Why not this show? There are some confusing comments on this site that seem to say it is available and others that seem to indicate not. Can someone tell me if indeed this series is available from anyone.
Tony Bennett: An American Classic (2006)
Best "tribute" show I've seen. Where can I buy a copy?
I'd read a review that said it was good and it exceeded expectations. Most tributes to performers consist of talking heads, voice over over stills or old footage, short snippets of songs or at best medleys. I find such shows annoying. But this was different. It had a minimum of gab and lots of singing and dancing, beautiful sets and costumes, lots of variety. There were many famous guest stars (quite a collection of singers from different genres) but not a lot of self serving chit chat. But what I liked most was that Tony took the time to do justice to every song on the show. Each song wasn't just a song but a "number", a production worthy of a musical. I loved the singing but I loved the dancing even more. It was great to see that Mr. Bennett, at eighty, still "has it", but definitely! Can I buy a tape of this show? Please say that a tape or DVD will be available or that it will be shown again.
A Good Year (2006)
Fluffy film falls flat.
This film does have beautiful scenery and a good supporting cast but that's about it. What I found annoying about the film was that it seems there are scenes that are supposed to be funny but are NOT. Speeding up the film and other cinematic tricks do not make a scene funny. And I was just not moved to laugh at the tired stereotypes of Frenchmen. I am not being PC - just bored. So the French are volatile, dirty and obsessed with wine and sex - so what - been there, done that - not funny. I saw this film with a friend who said Russell Crowe was "out of his depth". It seemed a strange comment as the film is just not very "deep" but I think I understand what she meant. Crowe was hot as a gladiator in a dramatic film, but in modern dress and a cute comedy he is just a stick. It would take an actor with a light touch and great personal charm to make me care about this contrived plot and believe the main character's transformation. Maybe Hugh Grant or, if you could go back in time, young Cary Grant could bring it off.
