Best Worst Movie (2009)
8.5? Are you Kidding Me?
I'm guessing the cast, crew, producers and their friends made up a big chunk of the 133 voters on this documentary. Troll 2 is a pretty funny 'so bad it's good movie', but a documentary about it seems a bit excessive. A friend who is aTroll 2 fan wanted me to join them in watching a screening. I figured 'Troll 2 had some laughs, so this cant be too bad.' Sadly, I barely made it through this tedious documentary, which was poorly edited with terrible pacing. There were only a couple slightly amusing bits, and no laugh out loud moments to be found. In all honesty I cannot recommend this documentary to anyone. At the best it could get a 2 or 3, but since it's so overrated I am giving it a 1. Only huge fans of the movie 'Troll 2' should consider watching this- the kind of people who have seen it 5+ times and still enjoy it. Also, please keep in mind that most people voting/posting on this movie page are people associated with 'Best Worst Movie'. Do not let their 'spin' affect your judgement, a movie should stand on its own merit, without being falsely hyped.
The Harder They Come (1972)
Great soundtrack, bad film
I'm shocked that all the "hated it" ratings are sixes and sevens, still above average. To me, this seems a case of "the emperor has no clothes". I understand this film was produced on a very low budget in the early 70's...Regardless, it became a struggle to sit through and watch. The DVD I saw did have some subtitles, but about 75% of the speech is not subtitled. Some of it is hard to understand. The Jamaican patois was cool to hear, but you struggle not to 'tune out' after awhile. Some of the shots were nice, and the realism was there, even if some of the performances were not great.(Jimmy Cliff did a good job) The plot is not bad, but quite predictable. In the 1:43 film, the highlights are Jimmy Cliff(Ivan) singing for a scene, and a couple of shoot-outs and a fight. Probably 15 minutes or so. The rest is pretty boring. BTW, near the beginning of the film, there are some weird cuts with the Ivan character that seem like a editing mistake, which made me laugh for a bit. One reviewer said this film has been cut so many times, that there are few copies of the original 1972 theatrical version out there. The ending was kind of interesting, showing how the media from a young age influences people, it could also be a general comment on the white man's/colonialism's influence on Jamaica. Other main themes are poverty, corruption, church, ambition... In closing, the soundtrack is definitely worthwhile, the film much less.
Brother's Keeper (1992)
Interesting but Overrated Documentary
I was tempted to give it a 6,but since its getting such high reviews went with a lower rating. After watching, I do feel its overrated, both here and at netflix, the documentary got high ratings and raves, but was not *that good. The documentary kind of drags along, its not real exciting. With time it builds up some momentum, but its mainly centered around the murder trial. The brothers while eccentric, sheltered and reclusive are not total freaks/weirdos,what I mean is you aren't going to see anything really crazy or shocking ,IMO. It could be kind of depressing for some viewers, seeing how the brothers live. The brothers are also hard to understand with their deep rural hick accent. The other neighbors are understandable, though. What I liked about it,was how it gave us glimpse into these reclusive eccentrics lives, and without degrading/mocking the subjects. There is some humor, but its tasteful. I liked the interviews with the townspeople, and found them to be admirable, decent people. I wouldn't mind having them as neighbors. It was nice to see people being good-hearted,tolerant and having a sense of community, its not something you see often nowadays. If you do rent it,make sure to look at the extras. There is a short film, where the reclusive Wards visit Manhattan that I liked very much.
Final Vendetta (1996)
Worth It for Bridgette Wilson fans
This is your basic psycho beotch movie. I wouldn't be surprised if its been shown on Lifetime before.
Bridgette Wilson does a good job portraying a conniving psycho. There some sexy scenes with her, in a bra, or swimsuit, but no nudity. Overall, the movie kind of lags and is not paced well. Most scenes without Bridgette are boring. Some of the other actors performances are lacking. It has potential, the basic story or "premise" is good but could of been developed more.
"The Hand that Rocks the Cradle" is a better movie, due to a better script and better performances. Even "Poison Ivy" was better IMO, but this is worth it for Bridgette fans. Another gripe, is there are no cast interviews or commentaries. Also on my stock TV speakers, it seemed like the music was mixed too loud and sometimes drowned out the actors voices.
