London Districts (2017)
Interesting but poor narrator
While the programme is interesting I find the monotone voice of the narrator spoils it. This is a shame as the subject matter is one I'm very interested in.
Mr. Turner (2014)
Why did anyone think this would be a good subject for a film?
Have just seen Mr. Turner at the Cinema. Two and a half hours of watching paint dry. One of the most tedious films I have ever seen. There was nothing interesting about Mr. Turner or his life apart from his wonderful paintings. That alone doesn't mean his life is worthy of turning in to a film. Sadly this film was mainly about Turner's non-descript life. Although the paintings do get a starring role they won't win any awards for their acting.
Two and a half hours of watching and listening to Timothy Spall grunt and gurn. The only saving grace was the woman, with the itchy skin ailment, who played his wife or maid, it was never made clear. She was suburb, she barely spoke but body language spoke volumes. She was played by Dorothy Atkinson.
Despite all the great actors, and I include Timothy Spall, this film was painful to sit through. I tried to fall asleep to see if that would help the time pass more quickly. Unfortunately I couldn't manage that. I did think about walking out but was stuck in the middle of the row, you know how it is.
I am really at a loss to understand why anyone thought this would be worth writing and filming.
Side Effects (2013)
A great story and with great acting.
This is a very good film with an unexpected twist that I didn't see coming. Jude Law is totally convincing as the man wronged and his retribution on the wrong doers is clever and devious. It keeps the viewer guessing if he will succeed right up to the end. Channing Tatum is amazing in this role and completely believable as the tragic heroine. Catherine Zeta Jones is quite good but she lacks believability and her character is shallow, this is more down to the script than her.
But, the film for me is completely ruined by the twist - here comes the spoiler - the two villains are lesbians who have contrived this plan to bring down a drug company. They are caught and one goes to prison and one goes to a top security psychiatric hospital. My problem with this is that it's yet another film written by a straight(?) person and the homosexual is the one who is the loser. This is a tired old cliché that American films keep trotting out ad nauseam. Brokeback Mountain was bad enough but this is even worse. For that it only get six stars.
The Help (2011)
I've been going regularly to the cinema since 1966...
...this is one of the best films I've ever seen.
I've been told I haven't written enough so my review won't be shown. For goodness sake. I find reading long reviews tedious and boring. This is a great film, worthy of Oscars for Best Film, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress (so many to choose from in this film).
I have to write ten lines of text for the review to be taken seriously. I'd like to know why? It's a great film go and see it! It's a great film go and see it! It's a great film go and see it! It's a great film go and see it! If I fill the review up with junk words 'they' will delete my account. Do you know what, I don't care. IMDb is obviously a pompous lot and need to review themselves. It's still not long enough for a review apparently so I'll keep up the twaddle in the sure knowledge my account will be deleted. Hooray, I'll stick to twitter.
