The Gentlemen (2024)
A return to Guy Richie's absolute best 😊
I would consider this a new masterpiece if you appreciate the genius of Lock, Stock, and like me you are somewhat partial to the English Gangster genre with a well placed comedic edge. That captures your attention from the beginning (fast paced) plus a sublime script delivered by near perfect casting. Then you should clear yourself a weekend as you have to binge watch this. Being a bit of a pessimist! I normal look for the faults. Unfortunately I didn't really any. On a final note I really hope that Netflix commission a second season, as of late, most of the new content hasn't really made me laugh, smile, laugh and totally engaged like this did 😊 10/10.....
A Town Called Malice (2023)
A Real Shame - A Wasted Opportunity
I was really looking forward to this show. As a avid fan of UK Gangster films as well as being a Essex Boy growing up in the 80's. What I was expecting was a cross between The Business and Rise of the FootSolider. Unfortunately as with most of the recent Sky Originals (except Gangs of London) it fell well short of the mark.
On a positive note the production values were great as was the soundtrack and the casting. But what has massively let this down is the script and pace of the show. I have a huge amount of respect for Nick Love but I feel that as a film writer/director it must be extremely difficult to cater for a 9 or so hour TV Season.
If this was reworked into a 90-120min film it wold have been great.
Harry & Meghan (2022)
Why??
I am by no stretch of the imagination a royalist. But also not a republican. I just am struggling to understand why Harry and Megan. Who justifiably want to live there life in piece. Have chosen to do the polar opposite. Having watched this with an open mind. I do not think it has achieved anything more than creating more tabloid headlines. When there could have been a real opportunity to create a narrative that tackled some genuine issues. Such as race and privilege (the 1% as both H & M fall into). Both Harry and Meghan seem to hate publicity and the press. So please just continue with the philanthropic work (as they do a level of good) and stop craving this publicity.
You (2018)
Dexter 2.0
I really do like this show. Possibly because I love Dexter and this is the reboot for generation X. Putting that to one side. It is worthy of a full on weekend binge watch.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Absolute genius. Could not stop laughing
I would normally give a more in-depth review. It is beyond funny with loads of flash backs to the original film .......humour wise. A mix of 'modern family anD family guy. Love this programme
Hunters (2020)
I loved this show ...
After hearing and reading mixed reviews about Hunters I wasn't sure about a 10 hour 'Box Set' binge investment.... How wrong was I. From Episode 1 I was hooked... Extremely fast paced, harrowing at times - the flashback sequences caused a real emotional reaction for me. But with occasional dashes of timely humour it helped to balance my emotional journey out without taking away the seriousness of the subject matter.... it does pay homage to 1970s blaxploitation films and possibly even Tarantino but it very much is original in its own right... Most definitely hoping for a second season
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Star Trek has been reborn not rebooted - Faultless -
As a closet Trekkie I wasn't holding out much hope, especially since the end of original ideas and the introduction of the dreaded 'reboot' which now sends a shiver done my spine 😩
(that's not a dig at Kurtzman's numerous reboot writing credits, I suppose if the studios want reboots you do the best you can! .... I am actually pitching a script for a short film that centres on the Marvel/DC etc Universes being swallowed by a black hole never to be seen again! Lol) The End ..... Oh and don't get me started on the 'reboot of a reboot'. 😩😭😭
Anyway back to the point. .... this is a great example of taking ownership of a classic. Adding totally original story telling. Introducing great characters acted by an Amazing cast (it is a breath of fresh air not to be distracted by a gaggle of A-Listers). Also the decision to have a season long story arch rather than an anthology was spot on. And finally the continuity..... the links back to the original episodes and characters was spot on. Hats off to you ..... So to sum it up.. this is officially my new favourite hour of the week....
As you may have gathered I quite like this series!!!!! But then came the dreaded and happily anticipated announcement that there would be a second season ....... I wasn't holding out much hope after the disappointment of Westworld, True Detective, 13 Reasons Why etc. But how wrong was I. These writers are fantastic......
I have noticed that Season 3 has been green lighted so please please keep doing what your doing.
All that's left to say is thank you for making me and my TiVO box happy
Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
Perfectly Brutal
The arcitypical example of a extremely violent 'Grind House' movie.... I absolutely loved it.:.. The only comparasion I can make is a cross between 'Banshee' & 'Death Wish' with 'Peter La Fleur' being both antagonist and protagonist. Made a nice change from the usual 'D.C-Marvel-Reboot Studio Production'
