One Day (2024)

Not my Norma cup of tea

I am more your zombie, marvel. Starwars, LOR type film goer.

However I got in this and loved it.

Leo Woodall is amazing, he acted his socks off - 100% on point, he is very charismatic.

Ambika Mod, grew on me, she was really good in the end and I understood her awkwardness.

Initially I did find her character a little "off".

The casting was very good - loved all of the characters.

I can't fault it

The episodes are different lengths and this pulls you through.

There is a brilliant sound track

The script is funny and well written.

Why did in it give a 10???

Well that would ahve put it on god father territory..... and it's good but not that good - ish a sold 8.

Mr Inbetween (2018–2021)

Secret gem

This was not on my radar - but it is brilliant. The episodes are approx 30min long. Each episode has a mix of humour, Banta or extreme violence.

The short episodes mean each one has pace, the show never drags.

Ray is is the Aussie equaliser!

It's well written and acted. The main character "Ray" is very well acted. It mixes the action up with his mad cap best buddy.

The young girls who played his daughter is also an excellent. Her only weak scene was when she was on drugs...... I was not convinced, but other than that she was brill.

I am used to US or UK shows, it took a while to get into the Aussie culture.

Would definitely suggest you watch this

It will not disappoint.

Usually I don't like cliff hanger endings, but I actually liked this one, with the combination of the sound track.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

Outstanding

I find it odd to give a score of 10/10, but the film is amazing.

The directing, the cast, Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon and Robert Downey are amazing.

The cast was a list of who, who in Hollywood, lots of names.

Small gripes.... The sound was a little poor in the first half. Was not sure of the necessity for the nude or sex scene. Not that I am a prude, I think it could have been done differently and probably pushed the film from a 12a or PG to a 15 rating.

Notwithstanding this I did find the film flawless, for a three hour movie, it had pace and flowed.

I like Nolan, but have found minor faults in his previous outings, but this film was outstanding.

I can see this film grabbing several Oscar's, for best film, best director, best actor and supporting actor.

Emily Blunt was very good however her role was not expanded enough. I think to allow her to be nominated.

25th Hour (2002)

This was never on my radar and have just spotted this movie on a streaming service.

This film has a stellar cast.

Monty has 24hrs before he goes to prison (or should I say 25hrs)

Who informed on him?

What matters does he have to resolve before he goes away?

What are his options?

Well you have 2hrs 16min to find out.

Whilst the acting is great, the story is just not strong enough, the story builds tension slowly and in the end not much happens.

If you are a lover of great acting.... Watch this movie, however ultimately you will feel disappointed.

This film (which I believe was based on a book) would have benefitted with a Guy Richie or Tarintino spin.

Ozark (2017–2022)

Amazing

The acting is so strong in this show. Everyone is faultless. My personal favourite is Julia Garner who is standout. However everyone is brilliant. The strong keeps you hooked. Can't fault it. None of the gangsters hare body guards which is odd, but other than that no complaints!

The Harder They Fall (2021)

There were some plot holes

You could guess the out come (with one exception).

Quite a bit of action

The sound track is different

Worth a watch .......... But I would n't have too high expectations.

Jai Bhim (2021)

All of the actors are good, the tribe people are all acted very well in particular.

The story kept me gripped

I did nit realise it was based on a a true story, This makes it even more astonishing.

Defiantly worth a watch

I have not given a 10 as to say 10 would Be to say the film was perfect......... and I can't say that......but it was really good and hi lighted prejudice, violence, injustice, systematic failures/corruption and abuse faced by marginalise groups in south India.

Peninsula (2020)

I thought this was ok. I have not seen the original.

Standard post apocalyptic script.

Acting was average

The ending was so contrived.

A strong 5/10.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)

I am a marvel fan and just seen Venom it was ok, nothing special, a few laughs. Special effects was good. Nothing much happened in the story. A very average movie.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

I have just watched this movie. I am an avid Marvel fan. This film introduces a new character, there is that standard Disney approach, with a mix of comedy, seriousness and lots of action.

Disney work through the numbers on this film, there are no surprises and it does what it does on the tin.

The acting is good, special effects are solids and the story is not bad.

There's continuity linking to the other marvel universe which is nice for the fans.

I would actually pitch this at 7.5/10, not quite an 8 but higher than a 7

Those review of 1 or 2 out of ten are way off the mark, this film is not that bad.

The Intruder (I) (2019)

Nothing new

Same old story, new married couple, strange man.

The couple make the standard school boy errors, which leads to death and ultimately a show down.

Standard genre film.

The Dead Don't Die (2019)

Right ingredients but it just does not Work

Great cast A few good one liners and qwerky dialogue Odd ball characters Makes in jokes about the zombie genre

However all and all it does not work, these elements are insufficient alone and even all together they do not make this film work or passable.

Why Did I Get Married? (2007)

I liked it

The film touches on some heavy points, but never really digs very deep. It's light weight, but that's fine.

The acting on the whole is good.......... Janet Jackson is a tad weak..... she was not that convincing.

I did like Jill Scott though.

I did like when the guys were just chatting, it felt really real and made me smile.

It's not ground breaking, it won't change your life, but it's fun in parts and some parts made me laugh out loud.

I think this a solid 5/10.

Message from the King (2016)

This movie is quite gritty and dark, it shows the underbelly of LA. I found all of the actors very good. Boseman is solid as ever. I am not sure what would have pushed it into a 7/10. I have seen some of the very negative reviews and I think it's a little unfair. I would give it a go if you have a few hours spare

Is My Daughter Really Dead? (2019)

This film never goes up a gear, it has that made for tv feel which it can't shake off. It builds the suspension slowed and then we speed to the conclusion, which is a shame. The acting is average, I would score the film between a 4 and 5 out of 10. IMDB does allow a 4.5 so I have give it a 5. Unless you have nothing else better to do, I would avoid.

Tenet (2020)

The most complex sci fi movie I have seen

Went to see "Tenet" last night.

The acting is good, lots of action but it's seriously complicated. It involves time travel and you see the past, Present and future in some scenes at the same time.

The score is a bit loud in places and in some parts the actors mubble a little.

If sci fi is your things it's worth a watch, but it's a difficult film to understand

The set piece action scenes are amazing and it's a film which will require a second or third viewing.

Nolan has a vision which is unique so different to any other director, his films are always thought provoking.

Washington and the rest of the cast are excellent, Pattinson, Debicki and Branagh are faultless

Branagh is very menacing and puts in an excellent turn.

I have scored the film an 9, but I feel this will go up on further viewings.

Somethings are not meant to be easy, if you want simple watch Disney......... don't let the negative reviews about complexity put you off, its worth a watch.

The Old Guard (2020)

It won't blow your socks off buts it's still worth a watch.

The story and acting is fair. There are some holes in the script, but on the whole it's fine. I did feel the script however was a little predictable and lacked tension. It won't blow your socks off but it's worth a watch.

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Lots of potential, lacking in delivery

This film has come out at a time when the life experiences of black Americans is under the microscope. Spike cuts news footage into the movie which hi lights when black Americans were fighting and sacrificing their lives for their country, fellow African Americans faced prejudice, hardship and the assassination of their leaders namely Dr King.

This worked well as did the shots/ scenes of Hanoi Hannah.

I really wanted to like this movie.

In 2020 this film has real relevance and resonance, however the film did not live up to expectations.

I found all of the actors were very good and they powerfully used the material they had, however the script/plot was lacking.

I found the film disjointed, I did not get into skin of any of the characters, there was insufficient character development.

We only slightly touched on the 5 bloods relationship with each other, how do we engage with them as people, how did they get on as a unit?

How have they changed since fighting as young men, this was not explored?

Who were these guys, what was there back story did they have the same experiences as young men before the conflict, we know nothing about Lindo, Lewis, Whitlock and Peters relationship.

Lindo and Majors (his son) had difficulties this was briefly dealt with at the end but this should have been explored in the movies more.

Lindo was a man with PTSD and huge guilt again this should have been explored and explained.

Boseman is the one character that the bloods all look up to, again this is not explained in sufficient detail and his supposedly strong relationship with Lindo.

I would have liked Boseman to have had more screen time and seen more character development.

Spikes direction was I felt weak, there was no tension, suspense.

Some of the shots lacked imagination and the film felt tired.

This in parts felt like a "made for TV movie".

My score for this movie is 4-5/10, however I leaned more towards 4.

Perhaps this is too harsh? Maybe a second view is warranted?

In my mind this film had all of the ingredients for a brilliant film, an excellent director, brilliant actors and a subject matter that is important and so relevant today, unfortunately the delivery was disappointing.

Looking forward to Spikes next project - from a fan.

This show is trying hard. It's pushing at every taboo/boundary. Some scenes appear to be controversial or contrived for the sake of being so, as is the language.

Clearly there is inspiration from sex and the city.

However the scores of 1/10 seem a tad unfair. The acting and story are not bad and I think a score of 5/10 seems fair

Paatal Lok (2020– )

Gritty and brutal

The story and acting was very gritty. It kept me guessing all the way till the last episode. The main actor was brilliant.

To be honest there was not a weak actor in the series.

The main police officer was not the standard leading man, he was flawed, made errors of judgement, etc, but that added to the realism and made you engage with him as a character.

The story has a darkness, which does not hold back with the gore and violence. It touches on wealth, religion, caste, the big city and the regions of India. If there was a second season it would be definitely on my list. I would note that I do not speak Hindi and watches this show using the subtitles.

The Mandalorian (2019– )

This is the best

This is a return in style and story to the original starwars movies. The production, special effects, acting are excellent. I am hooked.

I still cannot understand how George Lucas got the 3 latest movies : phantom menace, attack of the clones and revenge of the Sith so wrong.

Just Friends (I) (2005)

A light hearted fun movie

Ryan Reynolds really makes this film funny. Nearly every scene he is in makes you laugh. Reynolds makes this film an 8. It's fun feel good movie.

Kingdom (2019–2020)

Zombies Korean style

Loved this series, most episodes finished on a cliffhanger.

The acting is good as is the special effects.

The story is good with great twists, perhaps the game of thrones Writers should have got these guys to write the last season that would have been a major improvement.

Season 2 ends on a further cliffhanger, roll on season 3. I hope Netflix signs on the dotted line.

Extraction (2020)

An all round action movie

This movie does what it says on the tin. It's a fast paced action movie. The action is well executed and the acting is good for this genre.

I have read in one review this is "John Wick in Bangladesh"...... and think that sums it up well.

I have see some of the really negative reviews and must disagree. This is a straight up action movie. It is not a nuanced analysis of the geo politics of the Indian sub continent or a tourism video for Bangladesh. The location is irrelevant it could be anywhere and the next one will be. The dialects may not be spot on and the uniforms may be wrong ....... but so what ?

I think a score of 7/10 if fair (my nephew who is a film addict scored 6.6-6.7 out of 10)

I would recommend this film.
