Skvoz vremya (2023)
Hard to ignore tired tropes and bad voiceover
The whole movie has a stilted quality like anime or a video game cutscene. This could have been an interesting stylistic choice, but instead I'm pretty sure it's not intended. Much of it is due to the bad voice-over. It seems the movie was made for an English audience (the actors are mouthing English), but I think each actor's voice was redubbed. Poorly.
Then there's the cartoonishly stereotyped characters, and overused plot devices. It's not predictable so much as derivative.
Buoying all this up is some pretty decent production value. Sets and props are detailed and believable, cinematography and lighting are quite attractive. And Underneath it all is a fairly interesting story if you can get past the god-awful over-dubbing. And the god-awful MacGuffin name "quantanium".
The Boys (2019)
Brilliant. Twisted. Full of Surprises.
Brilliant premise . Smart, cynical, yet honest writing. Inspired casting (Karl Urban is A-Maz-Ing. Even minor roles like Haley Joel Osment ironically as a child-star has-been). Hilarious, shocking, twisted. Did I mention how twisted it is? Yeah, it's twisted. Mwaahaahaahaaaa!
Another Life (2019)
Moody Millennials in Spaaaaaaaaace!
The first three episodes (at least) are pretty bad. Bad writing, bad science. The premise is classic: Earth is (well, might be) doomed. So, whom do you send? A spaceship full of overly emotional, unprofessional twenty-somethings wearing only underwear most of the time. It's like something on the CW network. Even the computer is moody.
However...
There are some redeeming qualities. Some plot twists are interesting (though they're usually a result of the aforementioned unprofessionalism). Production values are decent. Some (only some) of the characters are interesting.
Occupation (2018)
OMG! War is like hard!
There's no cell service. No conditioner. And not enough time for dating. Super advanced alien technology is stupid anyway. But thank God everyone is pretty. Pretty people rule!
