When this came out, over 40 years ago, I found it slow and boring. Rewatching it today, I found it ridiculously overacted, with an entirely implausible story line.
Gregory Peck produces the most idiotic accent for his character, with the accent of Laurence Olivier coming in second as the most idiotic accent.
Several scenes are unintentionally hilarious, making the film seem much like some of the films of the '30s, which were award winners in their day, but are hilarious to modern audiences. Looking back, I'm surprised that this film was given serious attention even when it was made.
The scene that turns out to be high comedy is the ballroom scene, in which Mengele tackles one of his acolytes and drags him onto a table loaded with desserts. The entire film would be comedy if it weren't so insufferably slow.
