Gave up after 9 episodes
31 January 2023
Really forced myself to persist with this based on reviews and high praise from people who have now lost all credibility. The acting is terrible, the plot is non-existent bordering on ridiculous. I don't find it funny nor entertaining even in a cheesy way apart from a few cringey one-liners. Every episode is repetitive and lacking in depth or soul or any kind of artistic ingenuity or intregrity. None of the talentless hacks involved with this monstrosity will ever find work in the industry once this ends unless for porn or some afternoon soap opera. It boggles my mind how anyone can like this or why it is even greenlit beyond pilot not to mention a season and episodes both way too long. A nothing show for nothing people.

Didn't love it
27 January 2023
I've been a musician and avid listener/collector my whole life. But for some reason never heard of this guy Mark Ronson. And watching these 8 episodes helped me understand why. He has had commercial success but that is different from actually creating great music, great songs. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way from the get-go. But who knows in another life we could have been friends. If we do in this one, I hope he doesn't read this.

The idea for the show is good and some cool stuff here and there but most of the artists interviewed are quite obscure or has-beens. I'm guessing all the real players didn't wanna have anything to do with this which doesn't surprise me as i wouldn't either if I were them.

I'm guessing this series was aimed more at tiktok culture and djs with tear tattoos on their faces and their annoying, confused fans.

Not for me.

If you love bands/artists like Radiohead, CCR, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Jon Hopkins, The National, Howlin Wolf, Tchaikovsky, John Maus, Joe Satriani, Vicevoids, Toto, etc.... You will probably share my sentiments.

Thanks for reading.

The Year That Changed Nothing
14 January 2023
I really liked the first episode and was expecting more. There is no cohesive narrative structure to this mess of a series. I gave up after 4 episodes.

Never got into Bowie, Bolan, Carole King, glamrock... Weak, over-calculated wannabe poets with no heart or talent. I just dont like the sound of their recordings nor their melodies/lyrics. Maybe its a fidelity thing. Some songs are okay at best.

Lennon is a genius. Imagine is a masterpiece album. Marvin Gaye is an incredible singer. Whats going on is another masterpiece.

Harrison was a hack with some good moments.

I am a big floyd and zep fan.

Just dont waste your time with this political garbage. Musicians dont understand anything about that stuff.

We just wanna have a good time.

Stop killing each other.

Edit: ok was in a bad mood when wrote the above. Decided to plod on with it. Finished the second half and actually enjoyed it. Bumped up rating from one to seven. But still no zeppelin mentioned in the whole series? Their biggest album and masterpiece was released november 1971. I'm guessing the producers of the show didnt get rights from zep.

The Bottles Are Back!
12 January 2023
Really enjoyed this. As a songwriter and Beatles fans since I was 5, this was quite special. It felt like hanging out with my favorite band, witnessing their creative process unfolding. But also understanding why it had to end. Bands are for kids and growing up. Eventually you gotta leave the nest and fly solo. McCartney is a genius. Just listening him playing martha my dear... Wow. And Ringo is a great drummer. Lennon is quite a charactee with a unique voice. George is really into the same major/minor chord in a song progressions, its an interesting trick but i think he overused it. When the play together (especially with Billy Preston), they are world class. And that old hag complaining that they woke her from her nap playing so loud on the roof. When Paul looks at the cops and then decides to rock even harder. Amazing. Never seen anything like it. Just. Wow. Ultimately just four young lads who loved music. Record labels killed it. I blame them. Too much pressure. I always wonder what John would be up to if he survived the gunshot. Paul has lost his voice in the last 30 years. Lost the edge as a song writer wizard. Success can do that to a man. Interesting how their first solo records arose from these sessions. They are great albums. Abbey Road is a true masterpiece of modern art. I could go on for.

My kind of film
10 January 2023
If you love Jim Jarmusch, Bukowski novels and the music of Tom Waits, you will probably like this. Down and out protagonist dreaming of bigger things. Shot beautifully in black and white. This movie proves that you dont need a big budget to make great cinema. And makes you wonder what happened to the whole entertainment industry in the last 50 years. It seems like success and prosperity kills all greatness. My theory is that it creates a spiritual gap between the haves and te havenots. No matter how rich you get, however many accolades. One man starving means humanity is starving. Every single orphan represents our own moral cowardice. Movies like this remind us to celebrate the madness. All is fair in love and war.

Cool visuals/aesthetic
9 January 2023
But i cant give this anything more than a three out of ten. The film consists of many segments that are somehow connected with this mysterious green ball of evil light. The songs are throwaway besides from famous artists/bands from that era. I can see myself using this as a backdrop for a live show or at a party or something. Other than that, nothing really of substance here besides the visuals.

Monday winter evening in finland. Been tired all day. Really gotta get to work on my new album which will probably make me the most famous musician on earth. Afraid of change and success. I like my lonewolf lifestyle. Nobody bothering me. Just enough to get by.

So yeah, just watching movies all day. Eating hot dogs. Drinking coffee. Sleep whenever. Shower few times a week. Go for walks while listening to comedy albums.

What a life.

Hilarious!
8 January 2023
I was looking for a movie to watch. Saturday night at home. Ate frozen fish and chips, cooked in oven with a can of coca-cola. The day had been good. Got some writing done and even went to try an old piano the owner was giving away for free. Said i'd take it but then decided later that day that this instrument was not up to my standards.

But couldn't get into any of the films I was trying that night. Except this one. The soundtack is wonderfull. The plot is twisted. Lots of metaphors about life that I was too tired to understand but i liked knowing they might be there. I remember living in London with then-gf and we watched Lobster but I gave up on it because i was grumpy. She finished it. Have to go back and rewatch.

Watched film about half way and then it was past 23pm and i decided to go to bed and read my game of thrones book 3. I can finish this in the morning and thats what i did. Morning became sunday and sunday became today.

This kid is something. Saw him in the new Banshees film by mike mcdonald (also with Colin, gave it a 10). Like a young bob dylan or something. So googled, imdb:d and found this.

Masterpiece.

My kind of film.

See ya.

Loved it
7 January 2023
It was a friday night in january here in Finland in the year 2023. Decided to watch this and loved it right away as the beautiful piano arpeggios tenderly caressed my soul. Then the animals talked and played in the snow, navigating through the vicissitudes of life. I felt like I was reading one of those children books that also work sfor adults. Well, it turns out this was based on a children's book. If I ever have children I will make sure to only include film such as this in their programming and skip the hollywood brainswashing. Just gotta meet the right woman first. It's gonna be a great year. This movie reminded me of how magical upredictability and uncertainty can be.

Season 5 is the best so far
7 January 2023
Almost gave up after 4 seasons. Even wrote a review that gave it 5 stars but it was not approved. And most of the reviews are saying the opposite of what i am saying here which tells me this show has a split audience of those that want the disney marvel walking dead type stuff and those who want slower pace and more Vince Gilligan style crime show with smart characters and unexpected plot twists.

I prefer the latter and this 5th season gives us that.

Can't wait for the final season that starts soon. It seems F is getting on top of things again. That last episode of season 5 was one of the best I have ever seen from any show in the history of humanity. Especially the last line from F to his mama.

Hope y'all are having a wonderful year so far. I am sitting in my living room, listening to some classical guitar music with morning coffee. Probably gonna go check out a piano at noon that was built in the 80s but owner is giving it away for free. If it is good I have to sort out the moving of it from about 20 km away.

Take care now.

Ba-bye.

The worst movie ever made?
16 December 2022
The last movie I went to see in the cinema was Dune and that was incredible. I had similarly high expectations for the new Avatar considering the director has gone vegan and it seemed his heart is in the right place.

But this movie is terrible. And I recommend you save your money. I live in Finland and it cost EUR 17,40 for the matinee showing at 12:45. I was sitting at home contemplating whether to go see it or not since it was pretty cold outside, almost -16.

Well I should've stayed home.

There is no plot resembling anything of substance. There is zero percent humor except a flying arm late in the film that got one lonely gag out of one of the few people in the theatre, me.

I kept checking the time on my ipod nano and hoping it would end already after about 20 minutes into the film. I did breathing exercises and practiced mindfulness during the movie to help cope with the annoyance of having paid for an incredibly pretentious and boring film (with a budget that could feed a third world country).

Great art has to be surprising. Gimme something. Even the score is extremely dull and predictable. Such visuals would perhaps go with a more futuristic soundscape and why not throw in some absurd dance or sex scenes in the middle of the film. Nope. Nothing. This is hollywood woke familly friendly all the way but with a lot of violence and killing white people.

Of course.

I couldn't make it to 3 hours. I put on my winter gear, left the 3d glasses on the adjacent seat and walked out. I wanted to make sure the gods understood my disatisfaction in the hopes of attracting higher quality content into my version of the dreamworld.

Now back home, drinking beer, contemplating the vicissitudes of life (this year has been a weird one) and writing this review.

If this is what you have been up to James for the last 15 years or whenever the first Avatar was released, your integrity as a film maker has seriously been compromised.

Thanks for reading.
