The Walking Dead: Hearts Still Beating (2016)
At last something to smile about in a dreary season
When Rick and Daryl were reunited in this episode they could have been collectively hugging the whole audience because boy, we all needed a hug. Who likes to see their TV heroes like Daryl and rick reduced to blubbering wrecks by a pantomime villain like Negan (is it the script, the acting or the direction that's made him the most annoying person on telly when he's meant to be one of the scariest?.
Getting rid of Alexandria's most annoying character was also a masterstroke. It's the first time I've actually found myself liking evil Negan.
Now I can't wait for Rick to be reunited with Morgan and Carol when they meet King Ezekiel - a character so well acted he deserved more screen time instead of those overlong bottle episodes they choose to show instead.
When The Walking Dead returns, I'm looking forward to hearing Rick, Daryl, Michonne and the gang roar in unison with Shiva the tiger as they take down comic villain Negan.
Rectify: All I'm Sayin' (2016)
Superb acting from one the all time great shows
Watching the final episode of this amazing show will bring tears to your eyes and some joy to your heart. Tears because it's ending, but joy because it ends on such an upbeat note.
I'll miss Daniel Holden, his sister Amantha, his gutsy mum and his step-brother Teddy and all of the other wonderful characters that have made this one of the all time great TV shows.
Aden Young has been mesmerizing in the lead role and I'll miss all his Danielisms. Why he hasn't won Emmys and Golden Globes for his fantastic performance I will never know. The same goes for the actresses who play his sister and mum.
It's been a privilege to watch such a remarkable show where even something as simple as offering to scrub someone's back or asking them to dance is loaded with meaning.
I just hope that just like some of the other great shows like Breaking Bad and The Wire that more people discover Rectify in the years to come. It fully deserves to be a cult hit.
With the show at an end, I'm off to watch it again right from the start.
The Walking Dead (2010)
Another episode ruined by Negan
Negan is supposed to be the big bad in The Walking Dead, but instead his long speeches and pantomime acting are dragging the show and what should be a good story line way down.
Every time I see him, I feel like I'm at a panto and should be shouting "He's behind you."
Throughout the whole of this episode, I just wanted Negan dead. Not because I think he's the show's worst villain and so evil that he deserves it (I think that mantle should go to Shane), but because he bores me especially with the way he drags his baseball bat around and rattles it off the railings.
He's a bully and seeing Daryl reduced to a shadow of himself and unable to even speak to Rick made me angry. It's hard to see some of the toughest folk on the show reduced to that whilst Rosita and Michonne want to fight.
The only watchable parts of the episode were Rick with Michonne, Carl pulling a gun and Father Gabriel's masterstroke of making Negan believe Maggie was dead. Hopefully Negan soon will be. Maybe with Daryl's crossbow to his head or Michonne chopping off his head.
And a plea from a zombie fan. For gawd's sake, remember this is meant to be a show about the undead. It seems they've been ignored for the latest baddie who's not as bad ass as he seems to think he is.
