Dirty Dancing (2017)
Meh, plus an extra 30 minutes of meh.
This is no one's best. No one's best writing, directing, acting, dancing, singing. None. This doesn't even work as a tribute because it seems like no one involved liked this project. I kept waiting for any little thing to be a light in this dark mess. When Katy Segal started singing I thought that was it, but no. It was absolutely so unbelievable that a family resort, of the time, would have allowed that performance, that it wasn't even enjoyable.
I felt like they took the original script and said, how can we make this more "meh". And meh it is. It's missing any chemistry between any of the cast members in any way whatsoever. They took time to over explain elements from the original story that didn't need more explaining. In their attempt to make the story even more forward thinking they ruined what they had. I wanted to like that Lisa walked away from Robbie and got over herself to become friends with the musician, but the story needed to play off of the differences between the sisters. They killed the story dynamics, in every way.
How I Met Your Father (2022)
Not a remake
HIMYF is less of a remake and more of a "in the tradition of. "
Five episodes in and I'm enjoying it. I adored HIMYM. When it ended with a disappointing season 9 and very little time with Mother, I never quite got over what could have been. The initial rumbling of a spin off with the Mother amounted to nothing. All this time later revisiting the original Mother and her path to Ted is a missed opportunity.
But this new show in the tradition of is enjoyable as it is, it's finding its way. Was it perfect from the first? No it was missing that hook of "and that's how I met your aunt Robin. The different hook was good, but not played up as well. I'll definitely keep watching. Hoping for more seasons and a well done conclusion.
Finished the first season and I enjoyed it quite a bit, I think I could enjoy 3 or 4 more seasons of this.
Additional thoughts.
Currently in the middle of season 2 and I'm still enjoying the show, I raised my score of 7 to and 8, as I look forward to the weekly episode release and usually find time to watch withing the first 24 hours. I love and adore HIMYM the original, but like others I'm still bitter over the last season and the mishandling of the ending, I had hoped a HIMYF would have been and immediate retelling of from Tracy's pov. I always felt we were robbed of enough time seeing the ted and Tracy relationship.
That said, I didn't expect this HIMYF to be a retelling or remake of the original, and I hope when they end and wrap up the series we as given a more satisfying ending.
Quantum Leap (2022)
I want to like it.
I like Ben, I like Ernie, I want to like the supporting characters. I'm finding Addison to be my least favorite character. I'm wishing someone else was the new "Al".
Too much time was spent in the pilot explaining everything. We didn't need to know Addison and Ben were engaged, that would have been better left to reveal later. We don't need so much of the team, its nice to see some of the behind the scenes, but the original worked well without it for a reason.
I want to like this. I adored the original. I hope it will find some better footing soon. I hope it will find it's heart. I hope Ben leaped because he believed he could retrieve Sam.
Boo, Bitch (2022)
It's no Never Have I Ever
It doesn't have the same level of sophistication as Never Have I Ever. But it's not bad, it's a sweet show, so far (episode 3).
It's enjoyable, but it's lacking the depth of some other teen based shows. This doesn't make it bad, just different, as an adult I enjoy a range of shows including many geared towards teens. This is lighter fare comparatively speaking, but still enjoyable.
Christmas Down Under (2021)
30 minutes in....
Im 30 minutes in, and the acting is mediocre at best. The plot is pretty dismal. And the fight about birth control and having kids while a real issue felt less than real.
I haven't turned it off yet. But I still might. I can only play so much solitaire on the phone at one time.
