Friends: The One with the Two Parties (1996)
weakest episode in series two
I can't believe people have given this a high rating, so I'm moved to comment. Nothing of interest happens, and the whole thing is about embarrassing moments created by the ludicrous premise. It's just about keeping the two divorced (divorcing?) parents separated at two different parties. Only about 2 jokes are funny, and a handful of moments are interesting. It also shows what, for me, was the least best aspect of the series - the older generation is stupid and immature, and our parents make such poor role models, so hey! - you can do whatever you like, because there is no guidance from the past. Almost all the jokes about the 6 friends' parents are about their bad parenting (ross and monica's), their lack of morals (joey's), or the mess they have made of everything (phoebe's). This shows it in an unpleasant and bitter way, and it really grates.
Spellbinder (1995)
fantastic kids show, also great for adults
Plain brilliant. Quite well acted from most of the cast, especially the leads, kids and adults. Lost in a parallel world, Paul Reynolds must find a way home, while dealing with deepening crises in his new land. The key to the story is the way the plot builds, with Paul meeting various intriguing characters who constantly escalate the plot. It is at times nothing short of riveting. The downside is that it is a bit slow in the middle, with a basic dynamic of getting into some sort of trouble, then getting out through some clever ruse, and into the next snare. It begins to wander around in parts, going somewhere, but not all that quickly. Still, this is essentially brilliant writing. I love kids shows, and this was always a favourite. Constant cliffhangers and non-stop action.
