Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005)
Better than expected
I must admit, I originally had no desire to see this movie, but now that I have, I'm glad I did. I wasn't that big a fan of 50 cent's music and still really am not, but I'm thinking of giving him a second listen. No one can deny that he has the mush mouth factor going on due to his huge teeth, but you also can't deny he has a banging body and does pretty decently in this movie. I'm finding myself attracted to him, but I know that's only because I am attracted to the tale of the Marcus, the character 50 plays. I could feel his pain and understand the character's hustle. He did what he had to do and when he was shot, he knew it was really time to change the direction of his life although he was already headed in that direction. This movie truly shows that it always seems that when people are ready to make a positive change in their life, some crap comes along and tries to set you back. After watching this movie, I'm all the more curious about 50's real story. He seems like a interesting person, if his life is relatively close to the movie. Oddly enough, I'm thinking this movie was better than the semi-biopic of Eminem's life although Em's movie got better reviews. Why are we so critical of 50's movie and not so much for Em's movie? Like the # of licks to the center of the tootsie pop, the world may never know. See this movie. It's worth your time. I would have, however, given it a better name. I like to call it "hustlin' to survive."
She Hate Me (2004)
How "she hate me" surprised me
This movie really surprised me. I mean, I was raised watching Spike Lee movies simply because he was doing things other young directors weren't doing. He was the voice for voiceless masses of us blacks folks. He gave a platform to situations in the hood that most other people could case less about. However, as I aged and developed an eye for critiquing Spike's movies, I realized that he has this same formula for his movies which he rarely veered from and he always had to beat you over the head with the message. She Hate Me breaks that mold, just a pinch because he still follows his model, but this movie was surprisingly good. While I do feel he did bit off way more than he could have possibly chewed in 2 hours, he did address most of the issues he brought up quite well in the time alloted. Okay, from the previews, you know there's his guy whose lesbian "friend" approaches him to impregnate him, which in and of itself is a bit weird, but the movie is so much more deeper than that simply plot. Spike tackled tons of issues, mostly current issues that we all deal with now, but ultimately, the movie tackles, what would you do and how far would you go for money? This is a good movie worth spending 2 hours of time dissecting. I'm always recommending buying it so you can watch time and time again and discuss.
Æon Flux (2005)
Good movie to see
This movie surprised me. It had a good plot although a bit scary. I enjoy Charlize Theron's work and she is what made me give in to seeing this movie. The movie takes place 400 plus years in the future although the original virus happens only a little over 5 years from now. It was scary to see what the survivors did to maintain the race, but when extinction is a possibility, you do what you have to do to survive. Movies like this, that have a touch of possible reality, scare me a bit because you never know what the world is capable of and since fact is often stranger than fiction and life sometimes imitates art, you never know what could or could not happen. I'm glad that things turned out for the best in this movie however. This was a good movie and I hate that it didn't do that well in the theaters. I slept on it, others should not. See this movie.
The Godfather (1972)
Awesome
This movie is awesome. I've been in love with this movie (and the other two) since I was a young girl. And I think partly due to this movie, I love movies with violence. Not that this movie has tons of violence in it, but it has enough to leave a lasting impression on a young person. It has been said many, many times before that "all I need to know, I learned from the Godfather" and truer words have never been spoken. At it's core, The Godfather is about family values. This movie isn't only about the mob or drugs or any of those things that's just one part of it, but ultimately, it's about family. Despite not exactly having anything in common with the characters, this movie has left a mark on my life that could not have been placed there by another movie. This is THE best movie. Great job Puzo & Coppola. RIP Mr. Puzo.
