The Quiet Man (1952)
Perhaps John Wayne and John Ford's most enduring film...
The Quiet Man may the best of the many collaborations between John Wayne and John Ford. It's a simple and idealistic depiction of Ireland of the 1920s, all green fields and memorable characters, rather than the actual grittiness and poverty of the country during those hard years. But that's its charm - a simple movie with a simple premise: an American returns to Ireland, buys the cottage he was born in, and marries the fiery redhead lass who pines for him. Wayne plays Sean Thornton, a retired boxer (which he keeps a secret) who killed a man in the ring. That tragic event haunts Sean and is what spurred his return to Ireland, to try to forget that fateful fight. His nemesis is "Red" Will Danaher (an Oscar-nominated performance by Victor McLaglen). Danaher is a bully who fancies himself a gentleman landowner who refers to himself as "Squire" Danaher. He is also the older brother of Mary Kate Danaher, who Sean fell in love with at first sight. Thornton and the Squire have an epic fight that leaves both men admiring the other. It's predictable, but beautiful. It ends as all faerie tales - the hero gets the girl and everyone lives happily ever after.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The best movie of the year...
...and not one actor from the film received an Oscar Nomination. Ralph Fiennes was cheated out of a nomination for best actor. Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) received nominations, but not Ralph Fiennes? Travesty!
Kastanjemanden (2021)
Netflix, renew for season 2
This is a pretty good show, good enough to warrant a Season 2. It's better than most of the similar crime dramas on Netflix, so do yourself a favor and renew it. Also, feature it more - I had to stumble on it by accident.
Tha God's Honest Truth with Charlamagne Tha God (2021)
Unwatchable, Unbearable
This show is horrible.
It's like chewing aluminum foil.
It's like running a cheese grater over your head.
I squirted wasabi into my eyes to to punish them for watching this thing.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Sim0,y horrible
Lots of prime bots leaving high reviews. Horrible poorly-made film.
The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness (2021)
Netflix will put any content on its site...
Really bad. Really really bad.
Paul Giamatti must have some student loans to pay off.
And Netflix has gotten to the point it'll stream anything.
The Walking Dead: Find Me (2021)
Fluff...
Doesn't advance the TWD storyline in the least.
Seriously, the show's writers and producers have stopped trying years ago.
Always (1989)
Better than the original...
It may be heresy, but I think this remake is better than the original, A Guy Named Joe, with Spencer Tracy.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Don't bother...
I spent 2 hours of my life watching this... And Clooney, I'm getting those two hours back.
Knock Knock (2015)
Bad. Like a "I just stepped in dog poop" kind of bad
Fact:
1. Eli Roth is a really crappy director;
2. The less Keanu Reaves speaks in a movie, the better it likely will be;
3. It would have been near impossible to make the two female characters more annoying;
4. Someone owes me the last 100 minutes of my life back and I want it now!
American Typecast (2019)
Funny, well written, and great acting
I watched "American Typecast" at the HollyShorts Film Festival. This is a well done piece of filmmaking. Dane Cook, you surprised me... and I'm not easily surprised. Well done.
Luther: Episode #5.4 (2019)
No, no, no, no!
Writers, you do not get to end "Luther" with this sloppy week writing! No one was written to character, except perhaps Benny. That wasn't John Luther and Alice Morgan - it was an abomination. Shame on you for capping a wonderful series with such slop.
Hanna (2011)
Much better than the new TV series "Hanna"
I just watched the first episode of the Amazon streaming series based on this movie. It doesn't come close to the quality of the movie. Despite a slightly-above-average user score, I thought the film was quite good. I was hoping for a sequel.
The Sentence (2018)
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...
So if her family wasn't so nice (as portrayed by a documentary made by a member of said family) then viewers shouldn't care? That's essentially what most of the reviews are asserting. Also, anyone who says being a part of a drug ring is a nonviolent crime is naive. Drug users commit crimes, often violent in nature, to feed their habits. And pick up a newspaper from any larger city and you'll read about violence associated with the sale of narcotics.
