Jiva! (2021)
Predictable story but has its moments
I love music, moving and watching people dance. I didn't know what to expect out of a South African dance movie.. but this movie didn't really showcase the dancing aspect very well in my opinion ..
Some of it looked amateurish, the camera angles and lighting made it really hard to really see the moves or choreo when they were performing ..it looked like they were just messing around at some points.. even though there's million rand at stake..
Sometimes the dialogue/ talking script also seemed so one dimensional.. I found myself zoning out. However the plot is actually decent! Wardrobe, personalities and caramaderie is lively... Everytime Ntombi came on screen my jaw dropped at what she was wearing. It's one of those shows you already know what will happen so didn't need many episodes.
Blown Away: Christmas (2021)
Delightful series!
First off I'm glad a shorter series was made! I would love them to explore more series based on different types of holiday themes. I'm not sure if I got invested in the main episodes to be fair.. I did watch them but took a huge hiatus. I've had a netflix account for years and it's only now I'm really truly utilising it to the fullest and discovering things I like on here. Its February but I felt like it was really the Holidays. This limited BLOWN AWAY spinoff is heartwarming, full of laughter and lightness and would not be as intensive as the main episodes would be. Less contestants, more goofing around, and to be honest I didn't mind the co host. I thought he was silly in a good way I don't understand some of the reviews.. I Would very much recommend this even if you haven't seen the main series and looking for a rather uplifting reality TV competition show to watch!
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Jem'Hadar (1994)
Movie remake idea?
This episode is where I believe Avery brooks' acting chops and ability to command the screen comes into play.. It does make me sad though that we haven't gotten any movies about the federation vs Jem jadar and the Dominion. Or even around key characters like Li Nalas, Major kira, Gul dukat etc. Compared to other ST franchises, like Voyager, TNG, TOS and based on my knowledge, DS9 is the only series that hasn't had any standalone movies, or reboots. I know it hasn't had the same impact on pop culture as the other franchises. Maybe the slow start, the themes of religion and politics come into play.
Either way, this felt like something that could easily be released on the big screen even today.. This and episodes like "The Homecoming", "Bar Association", "Sons of Mogh" and "Equilibrium" are a MUST SEE episodes for newbies and even for the DS9 skeptics! I'm sure they will enjoy them. 👍🏽 🍿
I Am...: I Am Danielle (2021)
Only episode I've seen in the series.. I loved it!
There aren't any standouts besides main character Danielle. Letitia has a knack for portraying sensitivity, with boldness and edge. As a real life role model, there are some great messages to soak up in this. Lots of positive feminist messages about women supporting each other, ESPECIALLY when a woman has been victimised. Danielle could have refused to believe her! The other message is about not settling for less even if that means remaining single a while longer. 🤔 It's a heartbreaking ending but one that shows an empowered young woman. So yeah.. every drama doesn't have to make your heart leap out of your chest or keep you at the edge of your seat. For me it was not as boring as people are making it out. So I would highly recommend. And not just if you're also a fan of Letitia!
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Progress (1993)
One of the worst episodes of the earlier seasons
A filler at best. I signed up to see Kira rage, throw people off structures and do that badass walk or smile she does after confronting or threatening someone.
A smile that could range from contempt to affection. Jadzia Dax or Bashir seem more fitting for the role that kira ends up in, but it also couldn't have made sense in the context as neither are Bajoran.
The main story goes nowhere. The viewer is forced to take in an old grumpy man's long drawn out pointless tantrums that didn't even escalate once the inevitable happened.
We know Kira is incredibly loyal to Bajor but was there really any reason for her to become his nurse or to risk losing her job seeing as (from what I remember) he was a total stranger to her? The dynamic just felt forced.
I'm rewatching DS9 for the third time.. after like how many breaks and my oh my I might have to skip quite a couple of episodes this time! Oof 😅💔
