Star Trek: Picard: The Last Generation (2023)
A Strong Finish
I rarely write reviews, but this episode was worth it. I skipped seasons 1&2 of Picard, and I'm glad I did. This season and this episode felt like the send off that TNG and the crew deserved. The writing, the acting, and the production were all great.
The story also wasn't too outlandish, it felt like an honest continuation of what came before. The episode takes the correct amount of time to tell its story, even if it is a bit rushed. Overall, I'm happy that I watched this and you should watch it + the season as well!
And a note on "fan service". Unlike when Star Wars trys to pay 'tribute' to the originals, Picard actually does that when it's deserved. The final season and this episode respects us, the fans. We're all the better for it.
Emergency NYC (2023)
Heartfelt
To me, this is really more about the healthcare workers than only the patients. Some of the reviews complained that this isn't an accurate picture of healthcare overall, and I'd say that it depends. This is very New York centric, so of course you're getting the best, but there are good and less good doctors everywhere. These doctors do honestly seem to be doing a great job handling really high caseloads and it isn't always possible to spend awhile with everyone. Maybe this show is more of a goal than the current reality.
I think that this would be a very different show, for example, if it were filmed in rural North Dakota.
Unsolved Mysteries: What Happened to Josh? (2022)
More Episodes Like This Please!
This is exactly the type of episode that made this show famous in the first place. A truly mysterious case that actually has the possibility of being solved. It's not that some of the paranormal episodes are not interesting, especially the ufo episode from this season, but those types of episodes can never be solved. Something like this is a powerful story which the audience can become invested in because there is a chance that it can be solved. They wonder if they could know something about what happened.
What I love about unsolved mysteries is that it doesn't glamorize crimes, it shows that the victims were or are real people who deserve justice. This episode has interviews that truly humanize the victim and make the viewer want to know what happened!
Unsolved Mysteries: Mystery at Mile Marker 45 (2022)
Sort of Compelling
When I started this episode, I honestly thought that it was pretty clear what happened. A family that didn't really understand their daughter missed the signs leading up to her tragic suicide. That said, there are a few items related to this case that don't quite fit. I'm not sure if it's enough to say for sure that this wasn't a suicide, but it is possible that she was murdered. The only annoying thing about this episode is: why did they make this one and not one of the many other compelling cases out there? This also would've been great if it was like the old episodes, packaged with other stories with less substance.
Unsolved Mysteries (2020)
Spirit of the Original with Modern Production Values
I recommend watching this show, here is why:
Although much has changed from the original version(s) of this show, it still somehow feels like the same show. The theme is a modernized and more eerie rendition which still gives me goosebumps. The mysteries a presented in an unbiased and factual way. There is a general feeling of foreboding and every episode still ends with a "Go to this website or call this # if you think you have a useful tip." Although not every episode is perfect and there does seem to be a general focus on one type of mystery (murder), I do not feel that this detracts from the show as a whole. Although we do not have a host, it would've been difficult to replace Robert Stack without feeling like they were trying to copy themselves too hard. I think that strikes at what makes this a good reboot.
It takes the heart of the original show and only changes what didn't age well from the original.
The same producers are involved and I think people forget that this was the show which started most modern true crime shows. I hope that they improve a few things, sometimes the mysteries are just caused by bad police work, and I think people will remember how great this show is when cases start getting solved.
Unsolved Mysteries: Mystery on the Rooftop (2020)
A Perfect Reboot
Watch this episode!!! As good as the original, low bias, and rich with facts.
This episode is the most intriguing one so far in the new series, I have seen all except episode 6. It is difficult to say what makes this episode so good, but it feels like an episode from the original. I think the love story between the deceased and the wife makes it so much more believable that the official story is not what happened. The lead detective also carries that opinion, which differs from some of the later episodes. As the episode progressed I went from believing that it was a suicide with someone who hid their pain well to believing that some powerful individuals had something to hide.
