Alfie (1966)
Caine's launchpad
What seems at the start like a bit of English slapstick soon turns into something altogether darker. Alfie is a player ( a ladies man) a 1960's misogynistic anti hero. Alfie played by Michael Caine in a role that catapulted him to stardom manages to father a child, steal a young Jane Asher and sleep with countless married women including a fellow patients wife all with the carelessness of a teenager playing truant from school.
This is before he meets his match in the more worldly Shelley Winters whose character is no stranger to getting what she wants either.
Although very funny in places , Alfie's world turns 180 degrees until the player becomes the played.
A poignant movie ultimately about people using people. I first watched this in 1988 and it had quite the affect on me as a young 20 year old man. Three wives and god knows how many kids later I wish I'd paid even more attention.
Big George Foreman (2023)
What a waste
I'm a boxing fan and George Foreman was a great, I couldn't have cared less watching this tv movie.
I see more and more of these biopic films that in my opinion look like they're made by non film makers.
How you can make a story like this with zero emotion is easy to do if you aren't a great filmmaker. It's a tv movie, a to b to c film making.
It makes you appreciate the rate talent of great film making . Unfortunately I think thr ability judy make good films if being lost,
I also think people's tastes are not as refined as they used to be, there's so many poor films people just forgive and forget. Films are regressing and TV at the highest level is at a peak. Such a shame. Edit, a lot off Ff films from Asia and a few other territories are bucking the trend.
The Night Agent (2023)
Written for Children
It had the same writing and acting style of a Power Rangers movie, it actually reminded me of that series when watching it. It was so ridiculous I can't believe it has good reviews. The bar has been raised with TV this century, some amazingly well written shows. I can't understand how this wasn't laughed at.
I could go on and say the acting was shocking ( it was) but it wouldn't do justice for the writing . This makes Homeland look like Citizen Kane, yes even the last few series when it had almost become unwatchable.
Netflix do some amazing documentaries but seem to cut corners with tv shows. I understand a second series has been commissioned, that'll be a mistake. Forget this and just watch Succession and if you've already seen that then watch it again. This will be a waste of your time unless you enjoyed Power Rangers, if you liked that you'll like this.
True Spirit (2023)
Shocking Music
The true story is remarkable, awe inspiring to think a 16 year old would want to sail solo around the globe let alone have enough about them to actually do it.
Unfortunately the film goes down the sickly route. Ridiculous cringe worthy moments that really didn't need to be added. The story didn't need it, but the Director couldn't help themselves. At its worst it was like a soap opera episode and the music Director shouldn't be allowed anywhere near music, shocking is too polite a word for that.
Also some of the extra characters were so cliche as to be almost rude. They literally put an African lady dancing when she was watching on video, only surprised the Scottish woman wasn't pissed.
Anyway after all that the acting by the lead characters was fine and the story itself is so amazing it was still enjoyable. Just could have been so much better if handled with a bit more sophistication.
I'm going to find the book and read that.
Slow Horses (2022)
Better than Bond
Excellent writing and Gary Oldman is as good as ever, I'd go as far as to say he's the greatest living British actor. Jackson Lamb is a unique character, he's about as far away from Bond as you could possibly get. If you crossed Bond with Jack Carter, threw in a bit of Malcolm Tucker and then got him to live rough for a fortnight you'd be somewhere near.
It's fast enough paced for fans of the normal spy thrillers but that's where the similarities end with anything else you will have seen in the past ,
The casting is spot on throughout, I think the second series was even better than the first. Bring on season 3.
Glenn Hoddle: Extra Time (2021)
Born is the King
Excellent documentary about the most gifted English player of all time. Yes of all time.
I was lucky enough to watch him most weeks for 10 years.
Top lad as well, absolutely loved this.
Rogue Agent (2022)
Better than Bond
Excellent movie, James Norton is great in the lead. I enjoyed the documentary and the movie is only based on the true story that the documentary tells.
I can see why it was changed, this works better as a screenplay and movie, you get exactly the same feeling of this absolute sociopath from this film.
I found it gripping not slow as I've read in another review. Maybe seeing the very good documentary first helped, I'm not sure. Well worth a watch.
Interstellar (2014)
It's no 2001 but....
2001 is my favourite film of all time, and reading reviews here I can see this film had a similar affect on lots of viewers. Definitely gets better with multiple viewings. Flawed but excellent movie.
The Green Knight (2021)
Two Types go to War
If you've got a good attention span and don't need action in a film then this is well worth your time.
Equally if you're a bit dim then you'll probably hate it.
Stardust (2020)
And I felt like an actor
Can't think why Duncan didn't give permission for the music.
Bundy and the Green River Killer (2019)
The Room II
Incredible, really funny. The acting is genuinely the worst I've ever seen. I don't smoke weed but I can imagine this would be riot if you watched it a bit stoned. Hilarious
Conspiracy Theorists Lie (2015)
It's a must watch for any JFK conspiracy theorist.
A nice calm explanation of why people go for conspiracy theories. It follows the facts that we know and backs this up with science and logical explanations.
Also it shines a light on the sort of people who spread conspiracy theories whether that be the murder of JFK, the moon landings or on 5G and Covid 19.
A bit too long but still very enjoyable. This is the film you want to send to any conspiracy friends you have.
London Has Fallen (2016)
Team America F^#k Yeah
There's no excuse for this, none. Makes Team America look like a documentary.
Blinded by the Light (2019)
Clumsy
If toe curling schmaltz is your thing then you'll like this. Everything including racism reduced to cliched stereotypes. Like a poor episode of Grange Hill with songs. I had to leave the cinema with 15 minutes still to run as it was so embarrassing, I felt guilty as if I was leaving the rest of the audience to endure the rest alone.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
TV movie
The band for people who don't like music. The only thing more inexplicable than the success of Queen the band is the success of this movie. Incredible for all the wrong reasons.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Much more than a film
Beautiul in every way. Possibly the greatest movie of all time. It's ridiculous to try and put into words how good it is because I'd need to be a great writer to do it justice. And I'm not.
