The House of the Devil (2009)
Absolute waste of time
They achieved what they were going for, which is to make an 80's horror movie in 2009. Problem is, this isn't the 80's and we have enough of those. I get it. People who grew up on horror get a nostalgic bug for this movie as it brings them back to the good old days but for the love of god modern horror has developed into something so much more. This movie is absolute garbage and I have no idea how it has won awards.
Therapy (2016)
Just awful
Absolutely terrible acting. Plot is terrible. Scares are terrible. Nothing really redeemable here. Choose another movie to watch.
The Dark (2018)
Not What You're Expecting, So Pleasantly Surprised
This is an unexpected gem that should be seen by any horror fans. Not so much horrific, more so taking from themes of the genre and bringing something new to the table. The cinematography, storylines, acting, everything, was on point. At times predictable, this is forgiven by the production itself. Loved this movie and if you are on the fence and read this comment, please give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
The Alchemist Cookbook (2016)
Trying to be a creepy slow boil but falling flat on it's face
All I'll say is that you'll spend the whole time waiting for an amazing ending to happen, when in reality, you arrive at one of the stupidest, most aggravating endings of all time. This movie tries very hard to be a slow boil with the increasingly erratic and psychotic behavior of the main character. Mixed with constant scenes of his clearly degenerative mental state accompanied by his drastic actions, this leads the viewer to believe that the climax will be worth putting up with watching him lose his mind. In reality the entire movie is just a repetitive piece of garbage. Had potential and I can appreciate the actor's dedication and convincingness while portraying a man having/causing his own psychotic break, but unless you want to be incredibly aggravated when the credits roll, go ahead and choose something else.
Baskin (2015)
Made an account just to tell you not to watch this
It is honestly hard to explain how bad this movie was. Do not watch!!!
I get it, it's Turkish horror and good for them for trying. But, wow. This was just so incredibly bad I can't even explain. I guess I have to give them credit for egging my curiosity to the point of finishing the movie, in order to see what was going to happen, but other than that this is simply miserable. The plot is practically non-existent and the only thing that kept me watching was trying to decipher a semblance of a story out of the cacophony of cliche's and stupidity. The ending really mad me mad. Arda kills the leader (Father) with a key in the forehead and then proceeds to smash his head with a stool, all while an annoying amount of blood is splattering all over the place. How much blood is in one head?? And he killed him with a key, A KEY?? They try to assign some BS meaning to this key when it seems to be completely insignificant to the plot. The key pops up nowhere in the rest of the movie and it looks like they just threw it in there in a half baked attempt to try and do something cool, but failed miserably. Watching the first 20 minutes you may think the movie has some potential and that I'm just a hater, but trust me, I originally felt the same way and now have wasted an hour and a half of my life.
I'm trying to think of something insightful to say about the film, but there is literally nothing insightful about it. The scares weren't frightening, the attempts to make the viewer disgusted were just pathetic, the minion creatures that are supposed to be terrifying are contrived and overdone, and you can tell who is going to survive from within the first 10-15 minutes. No jump scares, no suspense, no empathy for a single character, no uneasy tones, their attempt at gore is awful, no plot, all in all I will never watch another movie by this director ever again.
The only decent part(s) were some cool transitions every once in a while, which certainly does not outweigh the pain of sitting through this horrible excuse for a 'horror' movie. The only horrific thing about this film is that it has 5.7 stars. Seriously guys, how have you voted it up that high.
