Alma (2022)
Does it now know what it wants to be?
Super natural Horror? Mystery? Super natural Drama? Fantasy? Esoteric Journey? It is a bit of everything and nothing in the end, with the horror aspect surely been the minor. So don't expect a Horror flick, it's nether scary nor found I it to be atmospheric, dense, creepy or any of that sort. It can be okay as one time watch and might appeal to some more than it has to me, I'm just not that kind of person who is into (imo) cringe worthy, over the top, positive thinking and tear jerking dialoge.
While the pacing might not be perfect I didn't found as bothersome as some others, it's duable without beeing a complete pain in the arse.
Acting, scenery - nothing to complain here. Score on the other hand.. garstly. At times it felt like I was watching a "spooky child movie" with these wannabe-eerie sounds and instruments going on.
Overall: Okay as a timewaste, but forgettable in every other aspect.
Slumber Party Massacre (2021)
Entertaining, self aware flick..
..that tries a little to hard to with wink wink nudge nudge. A little more subtlety woud have helped. Overall I enjoyed this one and had a little giggle here and there. If you know your horror tropes and like them to be a little bit twisted around here and there while, you as the viewer, aswell as the film makers, are aware of the fact that it's done for fun, give this one a go. Just don't expect a serious Horror flick, this isn't one.
The Good Doctor (2017)
Nothing to write home about.
I do like Freddie Highmore in his role as an autistic Doc. That is where the good stuff ends, at least for me. So far (S2, somewhere in the middle) it's just another hospital themed Soap Opera. It isn't even bad, it's just.. so forgettable and generic.
Your opinion might be different, sure. For me it works as a distraction in the background, but I'd never recommdnment this this to any of my friends.
Deep Rising (1998)
Totally depends on your mood and expectations.
You're, at least from time to time, into really trashy, cheesy action flicks with a horror'ish topic? Got some alcohol and mates over at your place? You might get some decent laughs out of this.
On the other hand - if you want to watch a at least somewhat believable, intelligent, creative and other positive adjectives you might have in mind, movie, do not watch this. I was somewhat in between, so I give it a 4 out of 10. A 2 up to a 6 woud be totally legit aswell.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
Clearly not for everyone.
You probably won't enjoy this movie if one or more of the following applies to you:
- You hate making your own interpretations and connections up in your head.
- You insist on having a clearly defined viewing experience.
- You think a movie needs flashed out characters and dialoge in order to appeal to you.
- Your second name is exposition, while your third one is hammer.
- You want nonstop action, destruction or slaughter.
You might like or even love this movie if one or more of the following applies to you:
- You enjoy making interpretations and connections by yourself, based on some lose information handed out to you.
- You're bored with mainstream cinema and enjoy some fresh and creative approacheds on how a movie is contructed.
- You have a faible for execellent camerawork and soundtracks, aswell as good acting.
- You think "show don't tell" is a way to do great movies.
Clown (2014)
Easily could've been a little gem - sadly it's not
The story of this move has been described many times before, so I'll just skip that part.
The good: The premise, the main actor, effects, visuals, audio - nothing to get excited about but it gets the job done.
The bad: Almost everything else. What could've been a little twisted turn on body horror movies lacks so many key components. The writing is, at best, mediocre, full of stereotypical sentences one might be sick of be now. The pacing is out of place, what starts slowly and builds up some tension, as the transformation goes on and on, flushes everything down the toilet after the first half and goes frenzy in the last 25 or so minutes.
A pretty predictable plot and almost every cliché is also on board, myself got pretty annoyed by all the irrational choices the cast does. And no, they weren't done in state of emergency nor panic. Speaking of annoying - the cast. Especially the mother and her son.. a prime example of dull, lifeless and shallow acting. You also get your fair share of "I know that would happen now"- jump scares, which adds nothing to the movie.
I give it a 5/10 (a 4 would also be totally legit). It's not a total disaster but overall just another at best average movie in a sea full of average horror flicks.
Scream (2015)
There's a ton of better ways to waste your time and be entertained as well.
By far the worst Netflix series I've seen so far. Terrible dialog and almost unbearable cheesy use of clichés. Naming episodes after classic horror movies or making references towards them doesn't make a series better. So far I've seen the first installment in Englisch and the second one in German, which is my natural language, so I can't blame the translation for making a less than average series. I kind of feel sorry for 2-3 actors, even though I can't recall their names, but at least they seem to felt an urge to act, besides of that you just have your typical horror movie performances.
After rather realistic and in depth series like Breaking Bad, True Dective, Fargo (just to name a few) this even more feels like an relic from the past, which should be forgotten by now. All the over-melodramatic, extremely artificial created suspense and totally unrealistic way the cast acts just makes it worse. There's entertaining +trash, and there's stuff like this pseudo hip garbage.
Do not waste you time with it.. unless you have too much of it like I currently do. Doh.
