Mom (2013)
I've really only been watching repeats
I've only really been watching late at night when it's repeated on a few different networks now, but I can honestly say I don't see how it can be labeled a comedy. The networks I've been catching it on don't exactly believe in following seasonal order when they run 2 episodes in a row (can be a little time line confusing) one episode from season 2 the next from season 3, but episodes the next day are the next episode in season so, it's easy to piece together. But to label this as JUST a comedy...even though they are from different seasons, the last few episodes I've seen have left me choked up. The writing and acting results in real, yes at times funny at times heartbreaking situations. The mother daughter relationships between Bonnie, Christy and Violet are pretty realistic. At times love, others less than love, the typical resentment of some "failure" on mom's part.
Tunnel Rats (2008)
Not the best movie for claustrophobic persons
If one suffers claustrophobia (even to a minor degree) this is definitely NOT a movie to watch. Unless you have a good anti anxiety medication on hand. Awesome movie despite the anxiety inducing vibe. Even if it isn't categorized as one I would put this high on the list of MY top horror/psychological thriller movies. Amazing writing and acting easily give the viewer the feeling that they have joined these poor souls trapped in the tunnels. It may leave the viewer with an overwhelming desire to spend as much time as possible outside after watching though.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
One of the few cases where I can't say the book was better
Anyone who has ever read any Stephen King knows that a good 98% of the time the movie is never as good as the book. Usually the movie loses so much of the characters from the books. I actually didn't read the story the movie is based on (Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption)until years after seeing the movie a few hundred times. That's why, when I read it for the first time I was very surprised to find myself saying "wow, the movie actually followed the book!!" to the point that, in an odd coincidence, the movie was on AMC when I was in the last few pages of the story and I held off onreading the last part, Reds talk about Hope, until it came up in the movie. And, as I was reading, even though the book told us Red was in fact a white, red headed Irish man, I heard Mr. Freeman telling me the whole story as I read it.
Lost After Dark (2015)
Grew up on films like this, but actually in the 80's
I've got to say, as someone who grew up in the 80's watching almost every horror movie that came out (BIIIG thank you to sharing a room with my sister, who was 7 years older...) when I saw that they were calling this an homage to those movies I was very leery. One hour in I decided to, after years of using IMDb, make an account just to review the movie!! From the cheesy cliché characters to the cliché plot line.. Totally brought me back to those awful movies my sister would force me to watch growing up. The only thing I didn't really like was the overly played 'Nam vet (yes, also an awesome cliché!!!) Mr.C played by the sadly underused Robert Patrick! All in all, actually not to bad of a movie
