Skew (2011)

Very well done creepy film
24 May 2011
I was lucky enough to catch this film at the Phoenix Fear Con and I have to say I am still thinking about it, constantly. This film left me both frightened and disturbed and needs a second and third viewing to reveal all it's secrets. The ending actually left me gasping for air. This movie is filmed with a hand-held camera like the Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity, but Skew has a much deeper meaning and hidden conflicts. Every scene, every line of dialog, is an important clue to help decipher what is happening to the characters and foreshadow what is to come. It is clear that the director/writer was very precise with the actor's every action. This isn't your usual "ad-lib" script like some others in the genre. The film starts off a little slow as you get to know the character's personalities, but once things start moving you feel that you are right there with the characters scene by scene. The ending is so haunting and cool that if you aren't paying close attention you will miss important pieces to the puzzle. If you miss the very intricate details at the films end you could be left never understanding what really happened to 3 kids attempting to take a fun roadtrip to attend a friends wedding. This movie is a must see at least once, twice?, three times even? before you can truly grasp it's full scope.

GREAT movie!
22 May 2011
When I purchased my ticket to see this movie my expectations were low. My first thoughts were that it was going to be nothing more than a mildly funny film with a few scares. There aren't many horror comedies that I actually love. It's just not my favorite type of horror film. I like my horror just plain scary and my comedies funny but I don't like mixing the genres. This movie changes everything for me. It is the perfect blend of hilarious comedy, crazy over the top characters and disturbing disgusting horrors. The writing is superb and the main actor that played Miguel is masterful. This movie had me laughing so hard that I was in tears. That's not to say it's not horrifying too. It definitely left my stomach turning in several scenes. One of the best things about the movie is that if you have ever seriously collected anything; baseball cards, dvds, books, toys or even stamps, anything at all, you will totally identify with Miguel's odd obsession. You will find yourself secretly wondering how far would I go to complete my collection? Hopefully sanity would step in and stop most of us from going too far, but after watching this movie who knows what some people are capable of!! I completely recommend going to your nearest horror film festival just to see this gem.

Thor (2011)

Loved it!
8 May 2011
Other than the Dark Knight best superhero movie to date. I don't know what else a COMIC book fan could want out of this film. I liked this take on Thor, one of my all time favorites. Sometimes critics forget some movies are supposed to be FUN!... THOR is great FUN! Chris was great as Thor and so was the rest of the cast. Loki was better than I could have hoped for. Go see it and let's hope the rest of the super hero films coming out this year are just as great. CAPTAIN America!!!!!!!! can't wait!!!! Then the Avengers Next! Man I feel like a kid again. All these action comic films bring back the memories of reading comics and wishing there were good films to match. If anyone remembers the 70's attempts at these characters you know how great it is to finally have good versions of some of these HEROES! Keep it up. Don't listen to the people that didn't like this movie, they obviously don't know what comics really represent to kids and adults alike.

Respire (2010)

Respire
20 March 2011
I really enjoyed this film. Respire has a great mix of mystery, suspense and horror. There are some very memorable scenes with outstanding atmosphere. The director did a great job of covering the large scope of the film without the large budget. There are some great moments in Respire that caused me to jumped from my chair. On the negative, a few lines in the script felt a bit "wordy" as if the actors are trying to explain too much to the audience. I also feel some of the character's actions are a little too predictable, but overall the film is more surprising than many big budget Hollywood movies. I am looking forward to checking out some of David Cross's other films. I say go ahead throw Respire in the DVD player late one night, sit back, and enjoy the movie.
