Nothing but advertisement
16 September 2023
I watched it on Netflix and I cannot imagined if I were to see it in the cinema, I may asked for a full refund. It was nothing but a total advertisement movie. Jack Neo is repeating the entire storyline and has no shame to hide his objective is just to earn money. Jack Neo used to be one of the better directors in Singapore but now, with all these productions, he is now in the bottom list. The jokes are absolutely not laughable, and the cinematography, honestly, TV series nowadays can do better. There are many other movies produced by Singapore, if not all, are so much better than this. Jack Neo is still in his past success and repeatedly using the same techniques, thinking that the movie goers are still that naive. Many directors are pushing their limits to reach new heights but his standard is definitely going south.

Frightening - is this the future of Conjuring universe?
8 September 2018
10 minutes into the movie, I realized this will not be the "Conjuring" type of movie. Conjuring succeeded in keeping the audiences in suspense. In "Conjuring", you did not know what was hiding in the dark. In the darkness of the room, you thought you saw something but you didn't. The creepiness was there. The pace was intense. The nun in Conjuring 2 was scary as you were not able to see It in full but it lingered in the dark and appeared mysteriously. It kept the audiences to the edge of their seats. But not this movie, everything was revealed and very predictable. Yes, audiences were screaming by jump scares but too much of the nun appearances damaged the eeriness build up. If you are not going for any depth but just scary moments, yes, this will be your movie. Only the last 5 minutes saved the movie when it linked back to The Conjuring 1. Very disappointing!

Poor Screenplay
2 February 2017
With foreign investments, it did not indicate that the production house had to add in so many unnecessary foreign elements into the movie. Is it even necessary to start off the story in a Chinese restaurant? Where was the link? Foreign elements should be added if they were needed to tell the story and not simply just to please the foreign investors. They only make the story weaker. The story line of the movie was ridiculously unbelievable, and the screenplay was absolutely disappointing. The lines were so pale and redundant. It lacked what a big blockbuster movie should have. No explanation was given for many scenes, and it became very puzzling and exaggerating. This was not a small budget movie, but it turned out to be one brainless movie.

Go in with an open mind
2 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
You need to go in with an open mind. Forget about what you know on the classic "Journey To The West", do not expect the traditional "Journey To The West" movies where Monkey King rules the world. Although some would not like the idea of the Red Kid "Hong Hai Er" in CGI form, but I found it amazing that the character was represented differently and uniquely. The entire city linked very well to his character and reminded me of "Alice in the Wonderland". The idea of this kind of adoption is totally new, in fact, may be unacceptable to many viewers. Tsui Hark has been my all time favorite HK director and though this movie may not be his best, but the concept and idea were refreshing.
