Lessons in Chemistry: CH3COOH (2023)
Mad shines.
Brie's unwavering portrayal of the genius scientist (who does seem spectrum before we knew really what that was). She's truly special in this show. I also have to admit I'm impressed at how well it's sort of hidden how buff she's getting at this point for The Marvels, though the rowing scene sort of let the cat out of the bag.
But Madeline. This little girl has stolen my and my partners hearts. She's complex and has amazing range already and the diner scene left us both utterly heart broken. I already don't want this series to end and hope it continues. She is only going to keep shining and I hope she keeps performing.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Ow my heart.
Just wow. Each episode goes one step further in intensity, drama, and expanding on the game universe. I truly enjoy they give more backstory to characters and events without straying too far from teb source material.
This show consistently pulls no punches, and shows a deeply intimate view of an apocalypse. In ways shows like walking dead couldn't quite touch. They gave bill so many more dimensions than just survivalist curmudgeon. The absolute heartbreak.
I can't wait to see where this show continues to go. Though I don't think they'll get to the end of the game by the end of this season. And I am a-ok with stretching it out.
Resident Evil (2022)
Not Resident Evil but very good zombie fare
I am on episode 3 so far and if you separate this from resident evil as far as RE7/8 are from their predecessors then you'll find yourself enjoying it.
I think in some of these reviews people are mad that it's a far cry from the games so they're coming out with whatever excuse they can to review bomb it.
Ms. Marvel: Destined (2022)
Had me at Brown Jovi
I honestly don't know how you can hate this show it gets better every episode. The wedding was such a feel good scene. And the fight was stupendous.
The inevitable bad guy reveal was obvious but.. ya know it always is.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Serene Squall (2022)
Best villain yet
So we are all VERY clear..
We all know when you insult their acting you're just saying "I don't like this person because I don't like who or what they are" it's no different than Reva in Kenobi.
When in fact she was the embodiment of the mustache twirling villains of the 60s. Top marks.
Ms. Marvel (2022)
We all know
We all know where the low scores are coming from.
It's cute. The Kamala actress is incredibly endearing. And the artistic stylization gives it a flair comic properties have lost. And as a hero worshipping day dreamer I found her very relatable. Episode 1 was a great start. Can't wait to see where it goes.
Snowpiercer: Ouroboros (2022)
I'm very forgiving of filler but..
The last 5 minutes are all you need.
To follow up the incredibly emotional, dynamic episode of Layton v Pike with.. this weird fever dream alternate universe star trek TNG holodeck episode was a really weird choice. This kind of pedantic, wiriters having fun, episode is fine when you get 24 episodes a season. But come on writers you have 10 episodes to woo us, and there's this whole plot thing to get to.
On the upside it seemed like the cast had a blast filming it and that makes it tolerable. But it dragged.
Diabolical: BFFs (2022)
Only a 6 cuz Awkwafina
This episode could have been so much better. But the western anime Mr Hankey the Christmas poo storyline just did not hit right. Maybe in the 90s this would have hit harder.
But I love awkwafina, but yikes. The Kyle running gag was pretty funny.
Star Trek: Discovery: Rosetta (2022)
You guys know you can just stop watching right?
I feel like all these reviews are being written by the same 4 or 5 chads. You're seriously complaining about filler? That was 20 out of 24 episodes of TOS, TNG, etc.
As far as the episode goes I loved getting more Detner focus. She and Owo are amazing characters and haven't had enough plot time this season. This series really does reinforce that star trek is a soap opera for nerds. I enjoy this crew and I will continue to talk up these episodes. And I'm very excited to meet the 10c.
The Walking Dead: New Haunts (2022)
Fresh starts
The Commonwealth reinstituting classism is sadly believable. The addition of motorheads eat the rich was incredibly clever.
We find out more about who these people at the Commonwealth are, and the town trying to be like the world before the fall is almost like if uncanny valley was a setting. I look forward to where this is going more than I have in a long time with this series.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
It was fine.
It didn't have quite the pizzazz of the first one, and reacher definitely lacked his pithy comeback pinache. Some slow spots but good action that's mildly plagues with infinite ammo disorder. Cobie is great in it and it'd be fun to see her have her own Maria Hill series based on her performance in this.
All in all the new series on Amazon definitely hits the JR character in a more earnest fashion. But if you need a good action flick to throw on you could do worse.
Resident Alien: Girls' Night (2022)
Character building done well
I don't understand the hate. I'm seeing "too PC! Girls don't touch my special area" in these reviews. Like.. I'm lost. A few of the female characters mentioned it's hard being a girl and be respected sometimes. Holy heck calm down guys. I laughed constantly. I like that more of the town is being featured. Solid writing.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Matured and near perfect
I think a lot of these poor reviews are from people watching episodes 1 and 2 and calling it quits.
Yes. The show moves on from your old favorites. It has a different vibe. And ya know what? That's okay. Star Trek TNG was a wildly different continuation. And the same big ol babies cried then too.
On to the review. I admit I'm not a huge fan of SMG. I think she was an overrated actor in the 90s. Her abilities have either improved or voice work was where she was meant to be. I found her to be apt as the lead in this. The new characters were interesting. And seeing the old ones come back in interesting ways was delightful. Lena Headey shines as Evil-Lyn with a new character arc which is an absolute roller coaster. The delight of the season was her bouncing back and birth between good hearted and her personal darkness.
Kudos to Kevin Smith for improving on my childhood with a fun series. Only complaint is these 5 episode seasons are WACK.
Arrow: Fundamentals (2018)
A few goofs but good throwback
Contains mild spoilers unimportant to the overarching plot
Oddly the thing that bugged me the least was the 20 shots Adrian Chase fired out of his revolver. Because I'm an adult and can understand he was a hallucination and therefore isnt bound by the laws of reloading.
What did bother me was the writers thinking "impeachment" means removal from office when it is in fact the legal hearing and due process. Clinton was impeached. He was never removed. Come on guys, research.
Other than that, the old suit coming back, the eye make up, the dark voice. And just shooting a bow and arrow at will. Great throwback with a solid mind game.
