Mashina lyubvi (2016)
A "movie" about a man that loves his junk passionately.
Do you want to watch an entire movie which was made for no other purpose than for the director/actor to show off his above average junk? In which, he purposefully places himself in multiple real pornographic scenes, none of which actually have a hint of romance to them, and all of which suspiciously and rather conveniently include the director/actor himself just repeatedly receiving oral stimulation from what i consider to be a rather unfortunate and DEFINITELY underpaid actress that, not even for one moment, looks as if she is enjoying herself? Then, boy, do I have the "film" for you.
This is a masterful exercise in narcissism, from a man that, by all accounts, and outside of the perfect example given by this movie, is quite the arrogant piece of work. (You can read up on that yourself if this movie hasnt told you everything you needed to know about this guy, AND if you care to suffer another 5 minutes of thinking about this guy) There are a fair few directors that, in the past, have "directed" themselves into unsimulated sex scenes (as Chloë Sevigny is all too aware) and, in what seems to be not such a coincidence after seeing it for the umpteenth time, there are some fairly obvious trends that seem to be present within most examples of this. Firstly, often the director himself will be the one "taking one for the team" for these extremely necessary unsimulated scenes that im sure the movies would entirely fall apart without. Secondly, you'll find that the directors doing this, 100 percent of the time, are fairly well endowed and are VERY CLEARLY extremely proud of this, made obvious by how lovingly filmed their meat usually is. Thirdly, and perhaps most telling, its almost always exclusively the director receiving extended oral simulation, quite often to completion, without even a look in for the woman, who again, almost ALWAYS looks entirely uncomfortable and entirely unconvincing if the idea was to sell to the audience that she's just "lovin' it". I imagine this discomfort comes inherent within the act they're being asked to perform as is. However, as we all know, directors are wont to "redo" scenes multiple times to "get it right" which, as is suggested by the very sudden appearance of tears in the eyes of the actress in this particular movie after a sudden cut in one of the many fellatio scenes, is a regular indulgence, atleast for this director. There's absolutely no WAY these scenes where one and done for these guys. I wonder how many "shots" (pun absolutely intended) these guys squeezed out before saying "okay we got it". I can just hear the "that was great but can we do it again without the gagging and tears?"
Anyway, its funny how that works, huh? Those trends. It's almost as if... these men are absolutely in love with themselves and, im sure, if possible, of they could, it'd be them on their knees doing what these unfortunate women have been coaxed into doing, only, the directors themselves would be having A LOT more fun. Oh well, i suppose the next best thing to self worship and self fellatio is having some woman do it while you lovingly film, perfectly frame and light your oh-so impressive member.
And to all of the directors out there that do/ have done this (you know who you are) i say, thank you. Thank you for being so brave, taking one for the team, and begrudgingly, oh so begrudgingly, exposing yourselves like that on camera while a VERY lucky actress gets to, scene after scene, take after take, choke on your mighty talent. I understand why you would take the fall for the cast on that specific scene. Wouldn't want to put one of your actors through the traumatic experience of being blown repeatedly. That would suck.
And so does this movie.
UFC 285: Jones vs. Gane (2023)
Worst fight was the headline
Funnily enough the worst fight of the card was the headliner. Jones dominated so hard that it made for extremely brief and consequently terrible viewing. To all those that actually paid for this fight and thought it'd go somewhere else, my heart goes out to you.
The fights before the headliner, however, were absolutely AMAZING. 2 submissions and 1 decision. Can't argue with results like that. Also, a hugeeeeee upset between the two women fighting, I'll not use names so as not to spoil that particular fight, because it was really great.
But, such a shame about the main event. Brief bouts are always disappointing but, when you've waited 3 years to see a man return, it's somewhat worse. Nonetheless, there's reconciliation to be found for those of us that waited said 3 years. And it's found in just how hard the GOAT dominated what some people thought would actually be a challenge for him. All I have to say to that is:
LMAO.
6/10.
The Last of Us: Infected (2023)
Beyond expectation? No. Flawless? More or less.
There's not much happening in this episode than most of us already predicted. The ending could be viewed as a surprise perhaps to casual (folk watching without having played the game) viewers, given the lack of direct experience with the major points in this story.
For those that experienced this "twist" or "shock", I congratulate you. That must have been an exceptional experience given the infected pose a major threat to the vast majority of this existence, and the fact that you likely didn't understand that properly before viewing this episode. Hence it's high rating. This is more or less note perfect.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
I Don't care. I just don't. This was beautiful, and an absolute experience in 3D imax.
Okay. I'm just gunna write from my heart here on this one, mainly because that's what was impacted most by this "movie". We call it a movie, but for me, and my ENTIRE family, sitting in an imax theatre with the sound blasting, the visuals in our faces via the perfectly implemented real 3D, this was more an experience than just a movie. And I really feel confident that I'm not exaggerating when I say that.
Is this the most complex, well written, nuanced story ever created? No. Is this a movie that does a massive amount to improve on the writing from the first movie? Well, not really, but kind of. Is this a movie that has a bunch of characters you'll absolutely adore by the end and remember forever? No, outside ot one particular character, which I loved a great deal. Sigourney nailing it.
Does this movie need to be or have any of the things I mentioned above to be an amazing experience that will draw the breath out of your lungs, and part your lips in utter disbelief at what you're seeing and, at times, almost FEELING? NOPE.
This movie needs to be exactly what it is. An experience almost essential to be had in the biggest, baddest, bells and whistles attached theatre screen you can possibly get yourself into. This is a 10 out of 10 CINEMA experience. As a movie, watched on its own, at home on your smaller screen, streamed or otherwise, I'd say its a 7.5 or 8/10. Similar to the first movie which I think is okay... maybe a 7.
My opinion on this movie is, if you're a person that can sit in the theatre with the 3D and surround sound, imax and whatever else, watching the film, and come out of the other end totally unaffected, you're a miserable person that's just looking for something you'll never find.
After the last few years we've endured as a species, the 3 hours of magic this film provides, in a good theatre, was more than enough to leave me, the entire group I was with, and the entirety of the audience I sat within, with huge smiles and the occasional teary eye upon the credits rolling. A buzzing atmosphere walking out with people looking more amazed than I've seen since Spider man NWH.
I don't care what say about plot, story, whatever, try to be less miserable. This WAS an experience I and many others won't ever forget, and I can't wait for the next one.
10 of 10, PLEASE SEE IN CINEMA BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
When humor and politics are dominant we get... this
A relatively terrible movie. The ending being its only saving grace. Forced humor and overbearing politics yet again. Marvel and Disney are on a losing streak here. With this and she hulk, we see what really matters to these "artists" now. Sacrificing artistic vision and story and atmosphere in the name of "inclusion". Of course they're calling Valkyrie 'king'. Of course she had a girlfriend. Of course korg has a boyfriend. Of COURSE. It's all just so forced and entirely unsubtle. This is not even bad compared to she hulk. So I'd still say watch this instead of that, but the major question here is this;
HOW did we go from Thor: Ragnarok, to THIS trash? How? We are currently watching the fall of what was once a really well done take on a universe many have loved for decades. We're watching the MCU die by their own glider. As it were. No way home is the ONLY good thing to come out of this pile of politics ridden rubble in recent memory. May we cherish that sole venture as long as possible. Because from now on, it appears we have THIS trash to look forward to.
If this, captain marvel, end game and she hulk are anything go by, this is the new norm for this "franchise". Forced eye-roll inducing cringe fest. I'm done. I'll watch spiderman, but I even doubt he'll be free of this garbage going forward. Our media is tainted.
Long gone are the days of Sarah conner and Ellen Ripley. LONG GONE.
House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
Ummm... wow?
It's odd that people are genuinely mad that this ended up being phenomenal. Are you still so NOT over the end of GoT that you're gunna spend your valuable time punishing the new effort and those that enjoyed it? Hmm. Its your life I guess.
Anyway, this was near enough perfect. Call me a fanboy or whatever. I really really don't care. Because I'm actually a happy person that is enjoying the fact that something turned out good for once. I'm not one of those people that feeds on failure and laughs at those that wanted things to be good. Am i a 'fan boy'? I'd say I was. At one point Game of Thrones was something worth being a fan boy for. For 6 straight seasons. The ending was indeed abysmal and crushed my love for the show.
Does any of that mean this show HAS to be bad? Lol, no. A lot of people seem to be almost trying to bend reality in order to make this piece of the jigsaw fit their wrong shaped hole. The show is really good. It's as good as peak game of thrones so far. That's something you can either accept and be happy about, or cry in your corner in the dark smashing your fingers against your keyboard in a desperate attempt to make the world make sense to you again via dunking on the show and down voting positive reviews.
Have at it. It's the same with every new show or movie. You get the cynicism vampires crawling out of their dark basements incase there's a meal in the shape of a highly anticipated movie or show that ended up poorly received. That's delicious to you. All that disappointment in the people that looked forward to it... how could you say no. You can exacerbate their negative feelings by rubbing it in, in the comments or review section, just as a bit of seasoning for your meal.
Only, this show ended up being awesome. So the pickings are slim, try as you might with the 0 star reviews and the constant saying of the words 'fan' 'boy'. Look elsewhere for your supper. This is surrounded by positivity because it's actually really good. Which of course is like a stake in the heart to you.
Well, unlucky. I couldn't be happier. We have good TV again and it's in westeros once more. Nothing but smiles here! Even though the episode was fairly brutal and in particular one scene had me struggling to even watch. But that's thrones. It shouldn't be easy. Which is what it became at the end of GoT. Toned down marvel action.
This is REAL thrones. We're back to politics and layers. Violence and sex. Beautiful action and complex characters. Huzzah. 10/10. Couldn't stop watching.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Umm... wow.
This I did not expect. We're back. This had me thrilled throughout. Hard to watch at times but oh my lord was I invested. Matt smiths character is absolutely fantastic thus far. If we continue like this, we may have a real return to form on our hands.
Better Call Saul: Saul Gone (2022)
Saul gone, Jimmy reborn
This episode is as slow a burn as any of the slowest burns in this shows history. Will that disappoint those expecting an explosive breaking bad esque ending? Absolutely. But if you really expected that, maybe you haven't been really paying attention to the show you're actually watching. It's been said before but I'll say it again. This IS NOT breaking bad, folks.
This episode to me was about Sauls transition back into Jimmy. And in that context, it IS a happy ending. Regardless of the situation Jimmy ends up in, the one he puts himself in even. He confesses to the court and infront of Kim because he wants her and himself to know that Jimmy still exists inside of the twisted man he has become.
His ultimate goal was to show Kim and Jimmy that Saul Goodman has NOT killed Jimmy Mcgill, and when she comes to visit him in jail to have that oh so nostalgic cigarette, that is Kim accepting him as Jimmy once more. Like I said, in this context, this is a happier ending than it could've been. Though Jimmy is locked up for life now, he is more free than he has been in a long long time.
Another nice touch that adds to the idea of a happier ending, cutting through the grim noir atmosphere, is the fact that 'Saul Goodman' is a living legend in the eyes of the inhabitants of the prison Jimmy is in. This likely means prison life will be fairly easy for him. There is a scene here which borders on him being literally worshipped, and it helps the viewer that still cares for Jimmy's wellbeing relax a little.
In the end, we are left finally with the real Jimmy mcgill, and Saul Goodman ready at hand to protect Jimmy as he ALWAYS has. His carefully created defensive persona that he has used to guard himself, his emotions and grief, and most importantly, his guilt in life, is now his guardian angel in prison.
I rate this a 9. 5/10, the 0.5 missing because I can't help but feel like I wanted a little more. Regardless of what I said earlier in the review, this was still a fairly grim ending. I'll need a rewatch to fully develop my emotional response to this. The scene with Walter when they're about to be given new lives by hoover man was really brilliant and left on a poignant note. I'm mostly satisfied and this was a fitting end for BETTER CALL SAUL. Not for BREAKING BAD. Get that straight in your head and you may just enjoy it as much as you want to.
There's Something About Movies (2019)
Worth it for the scene recreations alone.
I went into this expecting the typical British panel show fare. Which is more or less what I got, at first. Until of course some of the skits were introduced, specifically the scene recreations. When I say side splitting, I mean it. These can be absolutely hilarious, with some of my personal favorite being the Jerry M skit, and the IT skit. Fantastic and original idea to have the panelists redo these scenes, some of which are A list celebs and actors.
The in-between stuff is good too. It's had generally likeable guests and people that aren't afraid to make a bit of fun of themselves. The harry met sally recreations are absolutely BRUTAL to watch, but are genuinely side splitting. Especially Jen Saunders turn at the scene. Fantastic stuff.
In the end, you get a show that doesn't promise much more than a little chuckle and the odd movie reference, but ends up being genuinely good stuff. I belly laugh at LEAST once per episode, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for more or less any other show like this.
FAR BETTER THAN EXPECTED. Give it a try.
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
An overlong but brilliant display of tension building.
Elephant in the room? This movie is far too long. Extraneous scenes that can be, let's face it, boring. There are plenty of movies that suffer from this, but few so much as this one. I say this because when the movie is doing something, it is doing that something extremely well. Unfortunately, all of that is undercut by the aforementioned problems with pacing. The movie can be straight up incoherent at times. Scenes seem tacked on, with jarring transitions. That said, those scenes usually contain quality movie making.
The final 40 minutes of the movie are a masterclass in tension in my opinion. The violence in this movie is unapologetic, shocking and extraordinarily in-your-face. This is not a shock to fans of Zahlers previous work. This movie is quite possibly his tamest work in terms of gore, but still manages to surpass anything else "Hollywood" churns out. The gore itself is crafted beautifully, as is expected. There are moments in this movie that made me feel revolted. In a good way. It comes close to being exploitative at times, one very specific scene comes to mind. However, Zahler gets away with it due to how well executed (pun intended) everything is.
All in all, I'd say this one is definitely worth the watch. It doesn't quite reach the heights of its predecessors, especially Bone Tomahawk. Some editing and certain scenes being left on the cutting floor would have done this movie wonders. However, it still, in my opinion, is better than the sum of its parts.
7.5/10, stream it if available, if a fan of Zahlers work, I'd say it's worth a rent. If you aren't, wait for it to stream. It inevitably will.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Forced at times, but overall very satisfying and fulfilling.
SPOILER FREE.
This is an extremely difficult movie to talk about without going into any spoilers. But I'll give it a shot.
Having been excited and extremely hyped up for this movie (just like the rest of the world) for the last 7 months, I went in with extraordinarily high expectations. What I can say is, happily, those expectations were met and even sometimes surpassed. More or less everything you'd expect from a good spider-man movie is here, and then some. As I said, this is tough to talk about without mentioning plot.
Given that If i could mention spoilers here, I could sit and gush about this movie for hours and hours, about all of the ways it is great. But that isn't possible. So instead, I'll let my previous words suffice for the praise I give this movie, and I will move on to what I didn't like, as it is somewhat easier to be extremely vague and subtle when criticising the movie. Whereas praising is nigh impossible at the moment. So, the plot.
The plot seems, to me, to be spread extremely thin in places. The reasons given for the things happening in the story are pretty darn weak at times. There are contrivances, and they do sort of stick out. But only for a brief time, because the next scene could have you grinning from ear to ear having forgotten all about said contrivance. However, this doesn't change the fact that some of this feels messy. The movie comes across as being EXTREMELY desperate to get to a certain point, and it suffers for it slightly. Given the run time, the fact we're still rushing here is disappointing.
I suppose It's praise worthy that the movie is able to make you roll your eyes in one scene, at a particularly forced moment or plot point, and in the next moment, have you giggling with a child-like glee, seeing things you only ever wished you'd see in the past. And that truly is the strength of this movie. Without spoiling, the magic here is what has been pulled off. 'Pulled off' being an important coupling of words. Because that is essentially what has happened here, to the credit of everybody involved. It has been pulled off, and is ALMOST the best superhero movie ever made to date now. Certainly the best Marvel effort, second only to Iron Man 1 possibly.
I can't really say much more, as much as I really want to just rip this one apart and spill the insides out for you all, It'd be wrong.
Just go see this one guys. Trust me. 9/10.
The World's End (2013)
Considered the worst in the trilogy, but only by people that lack taste and cinema knowledge.
The elephant in the room- for some reason far beyond me, this movie is considered the worst in Edgar Wrights exceptional trilogy. That's not my problem. Perhaps it is the "worst" of the three, but by what margin? Higher standards have never been set than those dished out by Hot Fuzz and that other one. I say "that other one" because it's pointless even mentioning it by name at this point given the legendary masterpiece status it has achieved. Does "The World's End"match those accolades? Perhaps not. But like the popular saying goes, you can't capture lightning in a bottle twice. This saying here is important in regard to what I have to say going forth.
Hot Fuzz, a FABULOUS movie by all means, still doesn't capture the magic that other one managed to capture. So in what reality is it fair then, to expect The World's End to do what Hot Fuzz couldn't? You see my point here. The user scores here between the three movies are similar only until you get to this elephant in the room. Entirely unwarranted, The World's End sits a good deal lower in rankings on the mighty and "wise" IMDB score system. The script is just as tight, consistently funny, a quip a minute and all of them land. The chemistry between cast and characters is as effortlessly charming, bordering on electric. Iconic writing is present yet again, lines that rival or even beat that other one and Hot Fuzz. "Let's boo boo" anyone? The visual comedy, Wrights iconic rapid fire editing and camera work, telling a story all on its own, has never been more present or better executed than it is here. The acting, speaks for itself. A cast, as mentioned earlier, that effortlessly sells the idea that these people truly ARE or WERE friends. We believe it. As much as we ever have, at least.
All of the previous points I mentioned, these 'ingredients' if you will, are more than enough to elevate this movie to a level that at least rivals Hot Fuzz, and, if I dare say it, exceeds it. But that's not all. Like I said, all of this would be more than enough. But Wright doesn't stop at "enough". The final ingredient, brilliantly added, the killer app, the one component that puts the nail firmly in the coffin of Hot Fuzz, cementing it's third place status.... Drum roll please...........
NOSTALGIA; YOUTH. The promise of youth. The world itself could be contained in this tiny town, these tiny pubs, and beyond? Well that's something to consider when we finish this damn crawl. Youth promises us an unlimited world that is directly at our feet, in our control, at our whim. Sky is the limit. Right? FRIENDSHIP. Starting to notice a theme running throughout this trilogy? A desperate plea to friends, friends out of time. Friends that have moved on, that have succeeded where we haven't. But those details (more successful, more mature, changed) could all be removed, and there'd be that one word left over. FRIENDS. And friends they remain. The reason a friend agrees to complete a ridiculous childhood pub crawl 30 years after the fact, with their wives and jobs directly in the way, the reason lies in the word: FRIENDS.
The final part of this nostalgia ingredient is FILM. Another running theme throughout this phenomenal trilogy, another of its beating hearts, is film itself. Wrights love for film is more than evident throughout and across the entire series. Never more though than it is here. Spotting these little love letters to the art form is one of the genuine pleasures of watching this trilogy and in fact is arguably what makes them as great as they are, along with the other components of nostalgia applied throughout. Therefore, I won't be the one pointing any of these beautiful homages out. That, I will leave to you.
Give this movie another try. Be rid of the "idea" that this is bad, or is the worst in this trilogy. Go in with your mind freed of this "word of mouth". The wildfire that tears a great movie from its destiny. This movie is almost certainly a victim of that. So I ask you to forget what others have said. Pretend they're under a spell. Because they more or less are. The passing wind says "this is worst of the three by far". Well, I ask you to challenge that clichéd idea. You may just be pleasantly surprised if you manage to form your own opinion, without a hint of somebody else's involved.
Here's to the mighty Cornetto Trilogy. And here's to The World's End, a worthy part of it.
Baby Driver (2017)
Far better than some reviewers here would have you believe. 9/10.
I've now watched this movie 2 times. Mainly because I felt 2 viewings were necessary for me to come to an overall full and conclusive opinion. But that's not the only reason I've watched it twice. The other reason, is because it is genuinely fantastic and an absolute blast of a time. My first viewing was solo, and I came out at around 7.5 to and 8/10. The second time I watched was with my fiancé. She had turned up her nose at the notion of watching it for a while, mainly due to pre judgements based on title and poster. "It just doesn't look like it's for me" was the air surrounding the movie for her. And so, for a long time, she didn't watch it.
Now obviously, that has changed. We watched it last night after I convinced her with a glass of wine or two and passing promises of "it's not what you expect, you'll be surprised". For once, I was quite right. To her surprise (and a little to my own if I'm honest) she DID enjoy it. Her expectations were shattered and we found a movie that we can now enjoy together. It's testament to the movie that we BOTH enjoy it equally as much, given our admittedly occasional difference in taste media-wise. During the opening 10 minutes, I found myself, as I do often do, giving my corner of the eye glances towards her, In order to gauge her enjoyment. To my thoroughly pleasant surprise, I saw quite the large grin creep across her face as Ansel hammed up the screen with his musical glee.
With each enthusiastic and colourful scene passing, her and my own grin grew wider still, and I found these amazing moments in which we were both actively bobbing our heads to the classy soundtrack and sound design. It doesn't take an inordinately in-tune eye to spot that this movie is constructed around its soundtrack and design. This is the main gimmick (yes, it IS a gimmick. NO gimmick doesn't inherently mean it's bad, people should learn the meaning of that word before throwing it so heavily around) and it could've flopped in epic fashion. However, leave it to the increasingly mighty Edgar Wright to pull it off. And pull it off he most certainly does.
Wright, since his directorial debut with Sean of the Dead, has displayed an unusual tendency to become better and better with each of his cinematic efforts and Baby Driver is no exception. A stark contrast to any of his other movies, Baby Driver could almost, to the untrained eye, EASILY have been made by another man. There are certainly signature Edgar Wright moments sprinkled throughout, but the premise, the execution, the style... it's all innovation and experimentation as far as Wrights repertoire is concerned up to this point. Nothing you watch from his backlog can really prepare you for Baby Driver, save for those aforementioned sprinklings of his 'touch'. You're in for something entirely different with Baby Driver. And, save for a few forced romantic moments, that's exactly what you get.
As a sort of conclusion to this 'review', I'd like to explain why I haven't touched much on the plot or characters of this movie. In doing so, I believe I'll manage to compliment it even further. This movie must be experienced by going in blind. I believe not knowing anything before sitting down for a first viewing is ESSENTIAL to ones enjoyment of the picture. It's a bit of a double edged sword though, not knowing what to expect from this. A first viewing can be somewhat overwhelming, hence my more modest rating of 7.5 on my initial experience. The concept can come across a little confused at first and I genuinely believe the second viewing pulls it together. Especially if you have somebody to enjoy it with. That second viewing can really allow the more potent ideas sink in more, allowing one to have a "I get it now, this is what we're doing and damn, it's fun".
You'll find yourself loving what at first you only enjoyed, now that you have a solid idea of what this movie is going for. By the time the credits roll on your second viewing, you'll be wanting for more. If only another movie could do what Baby Driver did.
9.5/10. Must-See.
No Time to Die (2021)
The swan song we needed. Long live Craig's bond.
Best villains since Skyfall, not quite on Bardems level, but devilishly close. It's surprisingly funny, which I did NOT expect, given the more serious nature Craig's series has had. It's also surprisingly emotional, which is fitting given the circumstances. I won't talk about plot because it's pointless. You're seeing it anyway, let's be honest. My personal favourite of the series. 10/10.
Steve-O: Gnarly (2020)
A lovely bloke, reformed.
This is for fans of Steve-O. No doubt. However, his story is genuinely interesting. Regardless of who this is for, you can't deny that this man has come full circle and ended up being one of the most down to earth blokes on this planet. A genuinely inspiring story, with some cringe moments spread throughout (see "the turtle") this is an absolute blast to watch. Through and through.
Maybe not for everyone, certainly not for the faint of heart, but for me, this hour long show flew by.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Angry people reviewing this?
I get that we've been through a rough year, but some of the reviews for this movie on here are just, lacking a better word, salty. Like, is the movie amazing? No. Is any zombie movie "amazing" ? No. Is this the best of the zombie movies? Absolutely not. Is it worth the petty vitriol people are spewing on here? Lol, absolutely not. This is a perfectly fun popcorn partner.
The double standards of some people is astounding. I see a man here reviewing "28 weeks later" as a 9/10, while giving this movie a 1 of 10. I'm sorry but, in what world is 28 weeks later any less dumb than this movie? In fact, weeks later is possibly one of the worst zombie movies ever made barring the exceptional first 10 minutes of the film. For somebody to laud weeks later so highly, a 9/10 mind you, one point from the perfect score, only to then give this equally dumb movie a 1/10, serves to prove absolutely nothing but the bias people have against a certain director. The director in question being Z. S.
I'm in no way trying to say that this movie is great, but what I would like to do is just call out some of the blatantly spiteful bias reviews being submitted here, (some likely by the same few angry people under different accounts) for what they are. You don't like Snyder. That doesn't make his films any worse than the other dumb movies out there.
9/10 for 28 weeks later is just absolutely insulting lmao. You guys oughta get outside. This movie is exactly what we needed after last year and is perfectly dumb, stupid fun. Which is more than I can say for 28 weeks later, which is dumb for sure, but without an ounce of fun in the mix.
If you're giving 9/10 to that movie, you shouldn't be judging movies at all.
Freaks (2018)
Stick with this one.
At first, this movie comes across just bizarre. Some creepy overtones, apocalyptic vibes. In fact, until we hear a certain piece of exposition via a news report, I wouldn't blame most people for being completely lost. For some people, it'll be enough to click off the title and find something better to spend a few hours watching. For others, me included, it gripped me.
For the sake of not spoiling the movie too much and keeping this text short, I'll just say that this. Try your best to stick with this one to at least the half way mark, it starts to get extremely interesting, and when the penny finally drops, it's kind of awesome.
(Spoiler statement) X-men movie for adults done right.
Superman Returns (2006)
Incredibly underrated. Why?
When I first saw this movie in theatre, I loved it. I then went on to see if other people shared my love of the movie, to find an overwhelmingly negative air surrounding any discussion about the movie.
Why? I ask you why. Without going to some nitpicking little YouTuber to help you form your opinion, watch the movie yourself and come back here with your OWN opinion. Share it. I'd love for some people to come here with some real, raw thoughts on this movie. Without that pesky influence we call "word of mouth" having an impact on how you think.
If we're comparing this movie to ANY other good movie, it matches them. The acting is fabulous, Spacey as Lex is particularly well cast. The writing, again, on par with any GOOD movie. The effects? Mind boggling for its time, could compete with any blockbuster around that time and even years afterwards. There are very few weak points in this movie for a Superman fan, very few. Let's get to those, shall we?
So yes, I agree. This movie is not perfect. But that does not make it "bad". It's imperfect like many other movies. No different. Everything man made is flawed, to varying degrees. So, the negatives then. Is Routh a perfect Superman? Not quite. I tend to agree with the opinion that he looks a little young and a little scrawny. But his face, screen presence and "aura" cannot be argued with.
Routh comes across as superman perfectly and convincingly. Better than Henry Cavill and this is coming from a HUGE Man of Steel fan. (Come at me). Returning to something negative, however, the eye is drawn to Lois and the actress portraying her. She is the weakest link in this relatively sturdy chain. Lois has not been portrayed well since Margot Kidder, period. The character has been done little justice and it's truly a shame.
Other than Lois, we have a very strong cast. We have amazing VFX, action for days, strong superman portrayal, emotional story, huge stakes and a villain worthy of Superman.
So I ask, what more do we want? It's loyal to the formula and made me, my family, and most of the theatre audience I sat among. I beg, watch it again. Go in without the encumbrance of pre judgment, and enjoy. Come back with YOUR opinion, realise this movie is incredibly underrated, and let's get together to raise this score.
I mean seriously. 6/10? No. This film is the victim of a horrible reputation created by annoying little youtubers and internet dwellers that probably haven't seen the film in its entirety. This happens to many good movies.
Unfortunately for Superman Returns, that word of mouth was a nail in an undeserved coffin. The reason this isn't a review of the movie itself, is because I wanted to spread some positivity. I wanted to ramble about a movie I think deserves far more. And ramble I most certainly have.
Just give it a chance.
Wow. That's really something lex.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Takes a few viewings to realise how bad this really is.
This movie is such a mess, SUCH a mess that I feel for one to truly witness all of its missteps, one must spectate this car crash a few times. You know, similarly to how there are great movies that just cry out for multiple viewings, for those hidden details and gems you missed on your first, this movie manages to also require multiple viewings. For the exact wrong reasons.
Trust me, give this one another go. It gets worse with every viewing.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
wow... it's actually good.
Not nearly as good as t2, but compared to the trash we've had since, this is a really good little movie. It feels like terminator again rather than some horrific cg fest. The action is competent and its super cool to have Sarah back.
Still, I wish they'd stop trying so hard with the "new" terminator types. Trying to be too clever and it just doesn't pay off. There's nothing more scary than the normal terminators, they are the stuff of nightmares. We don't need this duplicating or nanotechnology to be cool.
Great movie, though.
Joker (2019)
The best movie I've seen in years.
This movie is perfect to me. I have never been so emotionally impacted a movie for a very, very long time. There are genuine moments of absolute genius here, and some images and scenes that I imagine will go down in cinema history as Iconic and legendary.
This movie deserves to be in the top 20 films of all time, easily. And as far as I am personally concerned, it now comfortably sits in my top 5 favorite films of all time.
Just go watch it. And then watch it again, and be so so grateful that this movie got made. I think that's a good word for it, grateful. I'm so grateful for this movie.
Absolutely 10/10 and beyond.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
It's Rambo. That is all it needed to be.
This movie is everything it needed to be, and whether or not you like intense violence is obviously going to differ person to person, but yes, this movie is bordering on a step too far. Which is awesome. i loved every second, its pretty much a movie that was built for fans, not critics.
If you love sly, and love rambo, this is the movie for you. Absolutely disgustingly violent is how i would describe it. The critics were always gunna hate a movie about a white guy murdering a bunch of mexicans, because its "offensive". Take critic scores with a pinch of salt and youll have yourself a great time at the cinema with Rambo, one last time.
The Boys (2019)
If I could give more stars, I would.
I wasn't sure about this, especially when I heard it was a prime original. But my God, they've done it. A pilot that grips you, and every episode from then on is just a thrill. Karl Urban has always been a favorite, but here, he just has so much fun one can't help but join him in it.
The violence is graphic, the sex is gratuitous, the themes are perverse, the language is disgusting, the show, is absolutely amazing.
If you aren't easily offended, I can do nothing else but wholeheartedly recommend that you go and watch this show. Like, right now. A word of warning however, it'll be over before you know it and you'll be left on a mighty comedown until we get some more of this utter gold.
Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall (2017)
You have to see to know.
No spoilers included. In what is possibly the most thrilling episode of game of thrones to date (with exception to the masterful winds of winter) everything changes. Nothing will ever be the same. I can't rightfully say this episode was perfect but .5 increments aren't possible on IMDb. My true score would be 9.5, due to some pacing issues and plot lines I don't quite agree with. The fast travel has been taken to some new extremes here and I can almost understand people being a little dismayed by it. I can see the critics of the new pace only getting louder with the airing of this episode.
This episode on a whole, however, is truly thrilling. My heart was racing for 90% of the run-time and again we truly get to feel like nobody is safe. The visual effects have never been better and the dream squad did not disappoint. One more issue im taking with the show lately is how they have seemingly dumbed down the violence, I miss the graphic gut spilling combat of earlier seasons. To go back to what i mentioned earlier in this brief review, the fast travel is to be expected, we are nearing the end of this story and can't spend full episodes on traveling. So, not perfect. But absolutely thrilling and visually stunning.
Next week can't come quick enough.
